Are opiates really bad for your health?

Not open for further replies.
Opioid abuse is bad for your health. First, opioids cause dry mouth or lack of saliva in your mouth can create all sorts of problems for your teeth and gums. Second, opioids often cause nausea and vomiting, long-term nausea and vomiting can cause a lot of damage to the esophagus. Long-term opioid use causes constipation and long-term constipation can lead to severe gastrointestinal illnesses and diseases, including ruptures of the intestines. There are a number of other problems which opioids cause in long-term use.

Hmmm I don't know much about Kratom, cept heard of it. Something to research! Thanks
Cowboy, over those years at work did you need to up the dose to maintain the focus?

Yeah, i did have to up my dose, much more so with real opiates then kratom. (A reason i switched to kratom, also kratom keeps me happy all day where as opiates have ups and downs) Ive been using kratom for 2 years and right now im tapering my kratom dose to save some money (not going to stop using) and im finding that kratom is pretty forgiving while tapering. My muscles get sore overnight and I wake up with RLS but after I take a small dose (2g) I feel 100%. My tolerance has gotten up to ~15g a day this time, im hoping to get to around 8. Kratom has been awesome for me, maybe it can help you too. If you decide to check it out I'd stay away from extracts, their a lot more addictive, cost more, and lack some of the unique effects that different strains have. Powder works great for me I would hate for kratom to get a bad name from extracts.

And it amazes me how people poo poo it for THIS use but not THAT use. In America many people are prescribed it for extended periods sometimes decades.

You aren't going to find people who have suffered nasty withdrawals or some of the effects kokaino mention advocate its constant use for reasons like self-diagnosed "add" because the potential risks aren't justified by the benefit. You hate your job and it's easier to do if you pop a vicodin? Learn to not hate your job or get a fucking new one. Yeah of course this isn't as easy as my last sentence may imply but once you've been through withdrawal or torn your rectum from shitting bricks or something, I hardly think you'll say daily use is worth it.

If someone is in agony and their quality of life is absolute shit, then the benefit outweighs the risk, especially if the person is supervised medically and proper precautions are taken. I have chronic pain and was fortunate to be able to get off daily opioids to manage it, but when they were necessary, the physical dependence was an acceptable side effect to me to not be miserable and be able to function like a person. Your "add" isn't leaving you lying in a ball crying wishing death to stop the agony so yes, I do believe certain indications warrant use of opioids and others do not.

Cool, so you did it for more than a year and the focus never disappeared? That's good news. I figured it's quickly go away with tolerance. Did you have to up your dose to maintain that?
i mainly "prescribed the morphine to myself" so i could interact socially (aspergers, social phobia), the extra "academic endurance" was just a nice plus. i didn't even know i had ADD at the time. i can't really recall how long the extra focus lasted against tolerance.

i did have to periodically raise my dose. because of the tolerance and dependence issues, i don't think opiates should be used daily for ADD. but i think that many people could benefit from something like 1-2x a week (i wish i had done that instead).
And yeah, I'm sure you did lose concentration after stopping :) understatement?
yeah, i tend to make big understatements. i became totally nonproductive and scattered after quitting, for an absurdly long time. i don't know if i'll ever get all of my focus back.

Opiates arent, but the tylenol they put in some of them can be. Always CWE vikes and stuff like that

Point WELLLLL taken Cane. I am sorry you had to/do go trough that. Sincerely. But take it easy on me fella, this isnt just a 'i hate my job' kinda thing. There have been many many times I considered blowing my brains out or jumping from a moving car because of my stupid fuckups. But the sensible route would be to 1. See a doc about ADD 2. Try traditional meds for it. I can see how someone in your situation might hear my theory and think Fuck her, she doesn't know what suffering is. Fair enough. It seems that's the general argument against me is that ADD wouldn't warrant opiate treatment. But gosh I do hate stimulants. It just seemed like a pleasant solution :)

Much love my friend

Nope, it's almost completely killed mine. Why would you think it would only effect men?

Hey lady! You live in England? Cool! Did you know Winehouse? HA! j/k I do so love that girl though :(

I don't know why really. Wishful thinking? :) I guess I thought it was an erectile disfunction thing?? But ... Good to know.

Here's to the ladies on bluelight *clinck* cheers!

Oh my gosh. Seriously dude. My self diagnosis might be getting old, but I would swear that I'm on the asburgers spectrum somewhere. I had theorized to myself that asburgers and ADD had some correlations. And unfortunately I don't have time right now to recollect. But uh yeah I'm totally antisocial and that was another groundbreaking effect for me from hydro. I was enjoying sociaizing at an unbelievable level. But that was easy to write off as a 'I'm just fucked up' thing.

I appreciate your feedback. This is a big mindfuck! I totally realize the danger of addiction yet this is a fucking cure all for me, to simplify. Is this how everybody's mind works before they decide to jump into the depths? These are real problems but methinks perhaps I should deal with them in a different way. This is probably what anybody who's not in my shoes would say. I'm looking into to Kratom. I hate fucking speed. It might be as unbearable as mild withdrawals.

Only the addicts of opiates will argue that they are almost completely fine. I was like that once , and im in heroin withdrawal right now. Although i wasn't taking high dose heroin, im definitely in withdrawal. I feel like crap and have NO motivation for anything, on edge and just hate life. I don't know how i am going to sleep right now, and yes i've gone through this many times so i know what to expect. As for effects on health, i read something on where long term use can cause harm to your heart. Also its not just the APAP in pain killers that is bad for your liver, any opiate is broken down by your liver and after a while that will cause damage to it. Heroin is a different story but you can get sick insanely fast from heroin, or maybe it was my ROA. I was shooting tar up my nose and it didn't take long for me to get penumonia and end up in the hospital. Anyways ending point, if you can handle taking it like twice a week or something that is almost totally fine, you won't notice any negatives with your self. If you want to take it every day, even just a little bit if you ever run out your gonna feel like complete shit and withdraw.

Yes, there are long-term problems with opioid use. As kokaino said, nausea/vomiting and constipation can cause considerable damage. Although fairly non-toxic to the liver and kidneys there are a few reports of hepatic damage in long-term use - there's a study that found hepatotoxicity occurring in rats (link to .pdf here) and consuming APAP alongside them will increase the risk. You should not brush off the risk of overdose and side-effects from the ROA either, even if you are taking them orally for now. APAP damage is also a big concern if you are taking pills containing it - don't exceed 4g in 24 hours or 2g in a single dose.

As others have said, this is a dangerous path you are walking. Opioids carry far too many risks to be a suitable treatment for something like ADD/ADHD. Benefits are likely to be temporary, then your tolerance will rise, then your dose, and before you know it you could be in the grip of a really bad addiction. There is a reason opioids aren't used for psychiatric conditions, and why doctors are cautious about prescribing them even for pain. This doesn't sound remotely like a good idea; of course life feels better when opiated, initially - that is why people take them. It's a different matter when you are waking up sick every day and needing a hit just to get out of bed. Have a read of The Dark Side forum and Other Drugs, and don't think that it can't ever happen to you.. no one plans to get addicted. We're not trying to be dicks, honest :) just concerned. I would definitely explore other options. Do you have a good psychiatrist?

You should check out the nudie thread in the lounge, that would be right up your alley... there are some fine BL women out there. ;)

Hey Mr Blonde. I am a BL lady myself, but pretty is pretty and I like pretty so thanks! :D I think I have to earn my way into the Lounge with posts though, right? That's some good motivation.

Thanks for throwing in your $.02 everybody. Lots of good points. I'm gonna research Ritalin etc. especially withdrawal symptoms and if there are some nasty ones I'm coming back here with my crusade! Haha in the mean time I'll just get my 2 bottles of tusson a year when I get sick and enjoy that.

Effie I don't have a psych but I could prob use one.

Thanks guys! This has been fun. Happy trails ...

I just wanted to point out that you cannot expect to keep taking that same dose and expect the same results. Opiate tolerance is inevitable. Soon you will need more and more, not only to achieve your desires effects, but just to keep from being sick.

they stop endorphin production which produces anhedonia for months after quitting which is significant i think.

er shitty cuts could still get in even if you use a proper filter.

given that heroin is never pharmeceutical grade on the street and IV users rarely follow best practise, to say opiates are harmless isn't exactly true, when their use is so interconnected with these negatives. the perfect junkie doesn't exist.

bmxgroupie you are quick to dismiss others claims (wine would help me work) just as quick as they are to dismiss yours. pharm opioids are known for being stimulating. people who take tylenol aren't high. theraputic doses of methylphenidate (ritalin) are way below recreational doses. you can't self diagnose ADD. opiates are physically addictive, if you stop taking them after an appreciable period of everyday use (a few months) you will start shitting your pants, vomiting, not sleeping for days and feel like every bone is broken. if you started them for concentration you would probably just end up nodding out all the time.

Using Opiates definitely makes it harder to get normal pleasure out of life, it's the main downside I see of using health wise!! After I do Heroin i have 3 days of looking like shit and not being able to do much then i come out of it and start to feel good but my mind just constantly thinks of doing MORE MORE MORE... it's really annoying.

Yeah, I ain't gonna lie, after 2 weeks my bottle was empty and it was like immediate depression. Then came the trying to figure a legit way to get more. I always had a sexy romantic attraction to it just never pursued it and it was never offered. Now I am convinced it's the greatest high on earth and it's such a DAMN SHAME! Fuck. But today honestly, that little voice is fading fast and that's comforting. It's been 4 days today and don't tell anybody, but my nose and rear exit were a little drippy all week :D oh boy.

I've used Ketamine to the point where it isn't trippy at all for me now and i have a massive tolerance (+ a rotten stomach) and i used to do K at work all the time. Makes the day go really fast and is something to do every hour or so (have a line). Though a few times i got cramps at work.......! NOT FUN! (i used to have 1 pint of beer everyday as well).

Have you tried Benzos before? I'd think they'd be better for work but again the addiction can be very intense.
