I just had my colon removed ( no bag; have my small intestine reconnected ) about a week and a half ago. Was released home yesterday and am still in a lot of pain. I have plenty of meds to take care of it but I'm more concerned about other meds. Adderall has become my new favorite med and I was wondering if taking this would cause more pain/problems or would I be fine to continue taking it as I was before.
I don't take enough to get high just a better mental state of mind. Normally 10-20 mg's.

Thanks

Are you taking it prescribed? What meds have you been given for the pain? We can't know about interactions without knowing that first.

There aren't any interactions. I'm prescribed Hydrocodone, but take roxi if it gets to bad. I'm more worried about it stimulating my small intestines or something and causing pain.

There are conflicting reports on this, so it seems to be subjective. Some people report getting pain relief from amphetamines, whereas others say it makes their pain worse.

Adderall commonly causes muscle tension and pain due to poor posture for hours at a time on the drug, but I don't know about it stimulating the intestines.

Amphetamines cause reduced blood flow to the intestines via activation of the sympathetic nervous system ("fight or flight" mechanism - diverting blood away from the gut and peripheries and towards the heart, lungs and muscles) as well as causing vasoconstriction. This is partly why you don't feel hungry when you take stimulants. You need a good blood supply to help the tissue repair following surgery. This is especially important for a major operation such as a colectomy, when it is vital that you don't develop any leaks and the stoma heals well. I have not read anything specifically about amphetamines and surgery but it does not sound like a good plan for me, especially for something as important as this. I would stay from Adderall away until you are fully recovered.

During the post-operative time period it is wise to stay away from anything other than the medication you have been prescribed.

I hope the recovery goes well! <3

Thanks effie, that was very helpful. How do I know once I'm fully recovered ? Can I just base it on when I feel back to normal or do I need to google basic recovery time for the surgery I had ?

I would go broadly speaking by how you feel, but I would certainly give it a couple of weeks to make sure.. sorry, I know that will be frustrating having to wait so long, but you really don't want to risk the tissue breaking down and not healing properly. Make sure you get plenty of nutrients too, nutrition is probably the most important factor in how well people recover after an operation.

I'm sorry you are in so much pain :( what analgesia have you been prescribed?
