Lormetazepam - Why does this benzo INDUCE anxiety/nervousness in me?

I was prescribed lormetazepam as a sleep aid but for some reason, once it kicks in I get nervous, anxious and aggitated. I was prescribed xanax at the same time and I had to take some xanax to counteact those negative effects of the lormetazepam. Xanax relaxes me and completely cures any anxiety or nervousness. I find it strange that a benzo could do the opposite. Does lormetazepam have any GABA_b activity by any chance?

Different benzodiazepines have different affinities for GABAA receptors made up of different collection of subunits, and this means that their pharmacological profile varies with subtype selectivity. For instance, benzodiazepine receptor ligands with high activity at the α1 and/or α5 tend to be more associated with sedation, ataxia and amnesia, whereas those with higher activity at GABAA receptors containing α2 and/or α3 subunits generally have greater anxiolytic activity.

I know this doesn't explain the paradoxical effects you are experiencing, but GABAa isn't like most other receptors because of it's multiple sub-units.

Is it possible that it has a lower maximum agonism(I'm talking full agonist/partial agonist( % ), not affinity), Or different subunit agonism?(even though most websites say all benzos are basically "the same" in how they bind to the bzd subunits.. subjective experience and the logic that benzos have many different structures says otherwise). Even drugs that hit the same receptor, but have different structure can have different effects(don't know about bzd receptors, but for example 5ht2a)

either of those while also having the ability to displace xanax from the bzd sites would explain.. I don't know though.

Honestly I was going to make a topic Similar to this. When I took an Intas Etizolam tablet After about 20-30mins when the effects were taking place I Felt like I was going to have a reallllyyy lame panic attack. I layed down for a minute because of this just rolling around but It could have been Me thinking of what this pill could be and I got paranoid either way yea ..... if anyone knows...

sekio said it best, its pretty common and we have no clue what the exact mechanism is. Its probably some complex "inhibiting inhibition of system x which regulates system y, system y activity is correlated with anxiety".

There's not much reason for people to research this effect, so it hasn't really been fleshed out more than "some people flip shit on benzo's".

yeah I now agree with alpha's idea of a complex chain of double negative inhibitions, makes most sense for sure. I've gotten more anxious on the comeup of benzos sometimes, probably an example of it reaching parts of the brain at slightly different times therefore triggering an anxious effect before it's spread more evenly. I'd suggest taking lower amounts over time and see if that helps(it should help in someway regardless I'd think, by lowering the amount of benzo you're adapting too at once.. plus if the paradoxal effects start happening you can just stop taking the smaller doses limiting the possible negatives). just an idea

That clears up my confusion though, thanks. I have some extreme paradoxical reactions to GABAb agonists too. Rather than relaxing my muscles, selective GABAb agonist like phenibut and baclofen make me physically restless. Its hit and miss though, sometimes they do relax me.
