First off, im going to rehab (being forced - not my choice :/) for coke, meth, and somewhat heroin .. I get my letter the other day that they decided I need to do the inpatient program for 28 days.
In the letter it says that prior to me actually starting the rehab though (once i make my way up the waiting list & they have room) i need to be clean for three days? why do i need to stop three days before going to rehab? i feel like that is what rehab is for & will they test me or know if ive used in the past three days ???

*& any advice you'd like to give me about rehab would be suuuper helpful, i have no idea what to expect !

Since I'm not from the US I might be wrong but rehab does mean drug counselling, group therapy etc. Before you can do this you'll have to be clean from all recreational drugs in 99,9% of the treatment facilities. If you can't do this on your own, you'll have to go to detox first. Often rehab clinics also do the detox but I would ask. If they don't do that they will most certainly be able to find you a detox place.
And they will most certainly test you. Not only once when you check in, but multiple times throughout your stay.

It sucks to be forced going to rehab, but if you have at least a bit of interest in changing something, it will be really helpful for you to participate and make the best out of your stay. You will be there for 28 days no matter what, and you can just serve the time or use it even if you don't want to get clean in the long run. Best wishes!

Rehabs probably don't want to take on the risk of being sued for medical issues that occur when someone's detoxing in their facility and their staff isn't trained to handle this. They're not trying to punish you; they're making the assumption that you've got something else sorted out for detox - i.e. a detox center, tapering on your own, etc. As well, there's an implicit message here that 'rehab isn't just to get you physically off of drugs.'

How should you respond to a forced detox? I know it's easy to be pissed off and upset that things aren't being done under your terms. It will be easier once you get there because a lot of the other people will be pissed off too and you won't feel so alone. But you don't have to be pissed off and feeling cheated the whole time. 'Grab the bull by the horns' and do rehab on your own terms. Some things rehab can be very good for:

Getting your appetite back and stuffing your face on someone else's dollar
Hitting the gym as hard as you can
Learning to talk with the opposite sex (or same if that's your preference) while sober
Reading books
Connecting with nature

Another thing I'd suggest is to try and play the role of Helper with other people. Either with menial chores and such or actually helping them fight their demons. I'm not saying that you should take the focus off of your own, but if you're feeling down and "trapped," this is an effective way to bounce back.

The first week will feel like a year and then the other three will fly by. Good luck! :)

The scariest thing about rehab, well at least for me, was the loss of control I felt at the beginning. (I remember when they took my cellphone to keep while I was there, I thought I was going to die right there on the spot.) Once I relinquished control (and I was free to leave at any time), the process was much easier, and I was there for ninety days, not twenty-eight. Believe it or not, I was sorry to leave at the end.

Rehab consisted of group discussions/therapy, 12 Step meetings, and some individual counseling if you're lucky.

Given that you won't have a phone, bring the numbers of your family, a close friend, etc. with you and leave your phone at home or with someone who can check your messages for you.

BTW, who is the "they" forcing you to go to treatment? Drug court?

missykins - cops found very small amount of coke & meth on me, because im young and have never been in trouble they let me off pretty easy and told me i either go to rehab or they could take me to jail.. so the obvious choice was rehab haha

If your not physically dependamt on the heroin then I wouldn't worry about the 3 day clean thing. You can certainly fail a drug test for cokeor meth way after 3 days so they have no way of knowing when u last used.

So is this a pre-trial diversion program or conditional discharge for you, where you appear before the judge, enter a plea of not guilty, complete the requirements of your diversion program, and the charges will be dropped? This is how it usually works, because the police cannot order you to rehab anymore than they can determine your guilt and sentencing. That's up to the court.

Yes they will definately test you op...Its probly like this so meth addicts dont come in fucked up on drugs and trigger everyone to relapse...I wouldnt be too freakin happy ifn i was on day 3 of detox and someone came to bunk in my room that was high as a kite..that might be one reason.....rehab and detox are two different things op...One is to quickly rid your body of the poisons you put in it, and the other is to teach you life long lessons on how not to use and get into the therapy side of things...

I have been to many detoxes but not a rehab...And also someone up there said they have no way to tell "when "you last used, but i beg to differ...They can determine by the levels ifn you had the drugs yesterday or 4 days ago, so that in my opinion aint real sound advice....Good luck and use it to your advantage, at least you aint in jail being the top dogs little bitch!

missykins- no. i do not have to face a judge & i will not receive any charges what so ever. the cops told me i could either agree to take myself to rehab or they could take me to jail and i could see a judge. i do not have to turn in anything to a judge or any sort of law.

OP, I've sent you a PM regarding this because TDS is not a legal forum.

How would they know that from a urine dipstick? It's a positive or negative result.

I'd say seriously evaluate yourself. You're lucky you got off that easy and aren't facing felony probation or drug court. Rehab was actually fun for me though. Met a lot of sexy girls (junkie heaven where I went) who all have raging sex drives that are no longer suppressed by opiates. Let's just say I was proposed to by a girl my 3rd day there. Even besides that it truly made me reevaluate myself as a human and I do want to change. I desire to chip occasionally but I no longer safely can since I am an addict. Basically look at it a three hots and a cot and speed dating service if you have to. Can always find new connects if you're going to a local facility. In no way am I endorsing that kind of behavior, just some silver lining in your grey cloud in a sense.

Rehab is actually not that bad. I went to a reputable rehab but I would have been better off at the state-run shithole next door in hind sight. Just stay clean the three days it wont be that hard. Because trust me once you get there they don't give a shit about your w\d's. They really want to teach you a lesson that the know you deserve. Shaking, crying, and vomiting constantly are all considered a learning experience!!! You catch more flies with vinegar at rehab so you have to bitch a bit to get taking seriously. I was too nice I guess.

I had a friend have a seizure and fall down a fleight of stairs because they wouldn't let him take his prescribed xanax. He never abused Xanax and he voluntarily checked himself into that rehab for Roxi addiction. Poor guy never received anything but trazadone and depakote. They also told him he wouldn't be allowed to keep his suboxone which he had just received from an addictionalogist. He wasn't allowed to take the subs back to his truck in the parking lot. To get admitted he had to let them keep the bottle forever. I wonder if a few got "missing" before they were disposed of... Near bout everyone that worked at this rehab looked like a huge junkie but claimed to be "in recovery."

If your rehab is like most then expect to not recieve shit and have to beg for as much as a tbsp. of robitussin! I couldn't take depakote as it kept making me vomit. They told me that they wouldn't give me anything else and that I needed to take the meds to avoid seizures. I told them to let me worry about myself as it was obvious they weren't concerned. Put on a few pounds before you go cause the food is hell. Many swore they ate better in jail!

Think of rehab as a working vacation. Get plenty of cigarettes if the facility allows you to have them. Your bored your going to want to smoke. Other facilities will give you free nicotine patches and gum instead; tell them you smoke 2 packs a day.

Anyway also don't date the bitches from rehab they are 9\10 STD ridden whores if you ask me. I know someone who worked at a rehab who can confirm the ridiculous amount of STD's a cute 19 year old blonde girl probably has! Good luck finding the hay in the needle stack if you decide to date...

Also things vary a lot from rehab to rehab. Think of a detailed list of questions that you have and write them down. Call the facility and ask. Also talk to the patients about issues you have as they can help explain how the system works (or doesn't work). Don't expect good advice from either the people that work there or the patients. Your going to have to talk to a lot of both before you know how to get through the program the easiest. By the time I learned how to go through the rehab process at my facility I was out and I socialized with people on both sides of the med line... Good luck and remember your just on a forced vacation and to try and have fun!
