Next time you're on a bus or train, holding on to a pole to avoid a fall, cranky that another commuter has nabbed the last seat, consider the fact that standing up could boost your longevity.
Not only do we need to get more exercise but we also need to spend less of our time sitting down, Australian researchers say.

Their study of more than 220,000 NSW residents found the longer you spend sitting down the greater your risk of dying early, even if you otherwise do regular exercise.
Professor David Dunstan, from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, said health workers usually focused on trying to increase people's participation in sports, and trying to get them to do at least half an hour of exercise every day.
"We need to think more about what we do with the 15 hours of non-exercise wake time," he said.
Sitting can be detrimental for our health because when we sit down there is an absence of muscle contractions, explains Professor Dunstan. These contractions are required for the body to clear blood glucose and blood fats from the blood stream.
Studies on animals have shown that when the body stops moving for long periods of time it slows down one of the key enzymes needed to break down blood fats.

Are you looking for a discussion on this, or are you just posting it?

I think there is a lot to be said about the misinterpretations of such a simple statement. It's fine to sit down. As mammals, we need to sit down to rest and relax our muscles. However, if there is no muscle to relax, then we're doing no good. We shouldn't be standing in one place for eight hours, as that creates tension; however, we shouldn't be sitting for that amount of time, either. This makes me further believe that we need to return to our roots and stay there, like we're meant to be.

I like this article.

oh shit, so if i am sitting most of the day, but exercise rigorusly (almost every day), i am still fucked?? Damn i thought the healthy eating and exercise would off-set it somewhat

Don't let articles like this frighten you, LOGan. You are doing everything right. It's unfortunate that society means most of us have to sit for long periods while working, but that's just how we've evolved.

The only way to combat it is to eat well and exercise and find 'incidental exercixe' wherever you can.

Simply walking to the water cooler at work every hour or so, or walking to someone's desk to talk instead of emailing them can help. Also regular water filter stops mean bathroom breaks, and more walking. :)

good discussion, what i was hoping for. the article is enough alarming on its own to motivate us, methinks.

Thanks i will definately keep that in mind! Fuck it i should just walk all the way to work instead of driving (4 miles)....This definately is an eye-opener though.

..whatever you want to call them
and as the pic was suppose to suggest thats what im sitting on atm
ive being doing it those post months and sometimes my sides are tired so i know that im using muscles, so its great for better posture which is great for better breathing habits which in return influence your thought pattern..

so all n all sitting can get you in better shape imo
(specially when you dont use your hand on the mouse n k-board while reading stuff or watching video)

^ hahaha a fellow Earth Horse...

Both of the physical therapy clinics I went to would use those 'whatcha callems' for their office employees to sit on instead of chairs. There are hoops with wheels that can be used to keep the ball in place ;) and to help scoot around rather then having to continuously sit and stand. In some countries, mostly Asia, corporations will have their employees do intermediate yoga or pilates prior to and once during a shift to help.keep everyone in synch and their lymphatic/endocrine system pumping. This needed to survive yeah + all the feel good stuff like endorphines seratonin and melatonin etc are distributed this way.

Wow, that sure is handy to know. Guess it's time for me to start walking to places that aren't my kitchen or computer chair. One more reason to go ahead and buy that bicycle I've been eyeing. The more important challenge to overcome will be my lack of desire to keep cycling for long periods of time daily instead of just riding it once every few days a few blocks to the liquor store. I should probably invest in some sort of badass "get good posture and feel comfy while ya do it" chair to sit in since I can't constantly be moving around with the amount of videogames I absorb.

i'm somewhat experiencing a total first world problem to the extreme right here, folks: being surrounded by so many seductive distractions that happen to encourage lethargy, and having the both the privilege and the means to waste days at a time perusing recreational activities. only moving your body every few days (well, maybe more that that lol) to complete extremely physically intense tasks such as driving to mcdonalds or standing up to turn the TV off because you can't find the remote. life surely is a battle, HAHA!

that's a pretty good solution. i'm a proponent of the standing desk, it's productive (helps the coffee circulate) and easy to start (good link for ideas), and leads to a lot of moving about if you're used to blasting high bpm music all day long =D

^ A standing desk is what I am most likely going to go with once the need for a new desk arises. I like standing and feel better when standing as apposed to sitting for long periods of time. At work (in an office) I'll often find ways to do my jobs standing, either by working near a cart or a high workbench. Co-workers constantly ask if I have a desk or if I would like room at theirs if I'm near it. When I reply that I prefer to stand, most look at me as though I have two heads! (Don't even get me started on the responses I got when I told them I biked seven miles there and seven miles back four out of five days last summer!)

I get the same responses when co-workers ask if I biked.

You'd be interested to see that I've started using my dresser as my laptop desk and my desk is... well, it's a cluttered pigsty right now, but it'll be something more productive soon. :)

^ I've been debating putting the hutch back on my desk and using that as a laptop desk, but I don't know if the width would accommodate it.

i walk approx 5 kms every lunch time, but still this has alarmed me some. i'll be standing at my desk more often at work and will try to get a standing bench at home for brekkie/dinner one day. no one said we should stand all the time, this had just made me question just how much time i spend on my arse.

humans are squatters. we are not adapted to sitting in chairs at all. even with "perfect" posture, unnatural stresses are introduced to many systems within the body, and any deviation from "perfect" posture magnifies some or all of these negative effects. chairs are a perfect example of the hairless ape's intelligence being just enough to be dangerous.

dont even get me started on toilets...
