Im just curious what ppl here think are good drugs that would be practical to take every day to treat depression/anxiety?

It doesnt have to be limited to antidepressants. It can be anything legal, or illegal, including drugs that a dr would never prescribe for anxiety/depression.

I've been diagnosed with depression & anxiety & although I know the dr will never give me some of the drugs i desire id like to just imagine what I would take if everything was legal & I had access to anything out of the chemist or on the streets.

here is some info on AD potential of bupe btw
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bupe#Antidepressant_potential
I didnt find bupe to make me feel any better at all but i didnt take it for opiate w/d. I was trying to get a high

I took Tramadol for 4.5 months & it worked really well for me. It increased my motivation & I had alot more energy & was just all around more positive. Good thing is i never got a tolerance to it. 200mg always felt the same. It was stimulating & an instantly working SNRI with weak pain killing properties. Should be an AD that they actually prescribe.

Ive tried Dexampethamine before & it worked great for my depression but ive never taken it over a long-term basis. Obviously meth would be out of the question because ud get strung out pretty quick but im sure alot of ppl have taken it every day to try to self medicate.

The only opiates I take currently are codeine regularly & oxy occationaly & codeine is what i generally take to treat my depression these days. I find codeine lowers my anxiety & depression. It doesnt stop working at the same dose as well. I dont have any experience with using any other opiate almost daily so I cant comment to much on anything else but im sure this group of drugs would work the best to treat depression.

I also take benzos, mostly valium to which gives me motication & lowers anxiety. & makes me more talkative. I dont take valium daily only a few times a month which is probably why I dont get a tolerance to it but I still have to dose 100mg atleast but that dose has been the same for a long time. Valium would be really practical if ya didnt grow a tolerance to it

I used to smoke pot which used to help my depression but doesnt any more. cigarettes used to also make me more focused but dont really any more. Coffee doesnt help much either & if i dont like drinking like alot of ppl i know who do it every day

The actual prescribed drugs havnt worked to well. The ADs I took felt uncomfortable up stopping the before they fully kicked in & the anti psychotics I take are only good for sleeping.

If I had to take a guess im sure it would be some powerful opiate id go for if i had access a magic prescription to have anything i wanted. probably morphine or oxymorphone or something but im wondering if ud eventually get a tolerance to it & weather it would be practical or not. Im only curious about practical drugs.

In reality with my current dr im considering effexor of wellbutrin. he wont even give benzos any more. I actually was getting tramadol for depression once off another dr. but that isnt common practice & benzos arnt usually for long-term use either but i know ppl who have been on the same dose without building a tolerance for years.

Why aren't you discussing this with your doctor?

I also think you're overlooking the drug most used for depression. SSRI's!

What kind of anxiety are you suffering from? is it social? Situational? Generalized? Panic disorder?

Your best bet would be to talk to a doctor about this, but I'll add my personal experience.

I suffer from social anxiety, panic disorder as well as paranoid delusions. The most effective treatment for my social anxiety has been by far SSRI type medications, most notably Sertraline (Zoloft). It has virtually eliminated the anxiety associated with initiating social interaction as well as manages my extreme self awareness. I had negative reactions to escitalopram and citalopram due to possible bipolar disorder, leaving me in a suicidal auto-pilot.

The anxiety stemming from paranoid thoughts and delusions was successfully eased by Seratonin/Dopamine antagonists such as Olanzapine(Zyprexa) and Quetiapine (Seroquel). I much preffer Olanzapine as it left me much less sluggish and sedated.

Oftentimes, panic disorders are treated by a combination of SSRI medications, which reduce the triggering of the fight or flight response associated with panic attacks, as well as anxiolytic benzodiazepines such as Lorazepam(Ativan) or Alprazolam(Xanax) which are used to treat acute anxiety/panic attacks when they occur.

benzos. pot. together if the pot alone causes anxiety.

a good lsd trip can cure depression as well.

I currently take Effexor 225 mg and klonopin 1 mg per day for my anxiety / depression. I also take methadone 120 mg for opiate dependence.

I would say in my experience the best drug for anxiety / depression that I have experienced is Heroin. I wouldnt want to go back to using heroin everyday though due to the lifestyle that it brings and the side effects.

I don't think it is in the nature of harm reduction to advise someone to use heroin or methadone to treat depression. It is not a reccomended treatment for that.

The best thing for depression that you'll get from your doctor will be an SSRI. I went through a bunch of them and other antidepressants like SNRI's, bupropion (Wellbutrin), and trazodone. The one that has worked for me was escitalopram (Lexapro, Cipralex). I take it along with aripiprazole (Abilify) and it really helps my depression. There's also some anti-anxiety effect, but I get alprazolam (Xanax) 1 mg 3x/day for that. I also have ADD so I get Dexedrine 10 mg IR tablets, which I take as prescribed 98% of the time. That could also be helping with the depression.

I guess it depends on the combination of medications you are on. An antidepressant alone will not help all that much, but with the Abilify it works well. So I suggest starting with an SSRI along with Abilify and go from there.

This is far too open ended... Your doctor is the best person to talk about this with. If this particular doctor isn't producing the results you wish for, you should find a different one.

Do you have a specific purpose in mind, or were you looking for random speculation (as it seems you're getting)?

If you don't have a specific need, this thread will be closed. Speculation threads aren't allowed.

Don't overlook Nardil (Phenelzine), a non-reversible MAOI that I've heard some great things about for depression.

The problem here is that depression is sedating and anxiety is stimulating. Drugs that help make you less anxious, like benzos, tend to make you depressed. Drugs that make you less depressed, like SNRI's and MAOI's, tend to make you more anxious.

The reason everyone is saying talk to your Dr. is because there is no magic cure. Anxiety and depression are caused by a myriad of situations and stimuli as well as past and present events. Street drugs are a short term solution and will inevitably cause more anxiety and depression period. Anyone who suggests opiates for either one or both of these problems is overlooking the fact that they are almost never taken responsibly without some form of addiction (psychological, physical or both) developing down the road. From the drugs you say help your anxiety and depression it sounds like your Dr. could manage and even eliminate your symptoms altogether without too much guess work.

I would reformat your question so we can better help in either harm reduction or dosing advice, but as is, your question is way too broad and speculative. Good luck.

Celexa is a great Anti-Depressant. Tramadol is a pain medication. I am not sure why they would have given you that for depression. Personally, I think as long as you have an "open mind" when discussing with you Doctor, the options you have to treat your condition, you WILL find something to help.

These anti-depressants take at least 7 days but more like 14 before you get the true effect from it. It "has to" build up in your system.

Street drugs, are absolutely NOT the way to go. Especially if you're dealing with Depression. Sure you may feel "good" (for lack of terms) for a very short time, However the "reality" of your problem is still there ON TOP of whatever you may or may not ave done while getting high. It is not worth it.

When dealing with Depression, your #1 goal should be a "long-term" fix, which would be to Talk to your Doctor, get started on a prescription, and have someone to talk to. In all situations, there is a root to the problem. If you get to the root of the problem, you'll be surprised how much better you're going to feel. 6 months from the time you are "wrong through" things...along with you medications, you'll be forever grateful and be a
new person. *I am living Proof* I don't know your beliefe's but I can tell you "For Me" GOD Makes all the difference in the world! I cannot imagine where I would be without him!!

After reading through so more post, I want to hit on a little more about the Street drugs. Heroin and cocaine, along with any other drugs, will lead you to disaster! Very few make it, and if you are one that makes it out of that life style, you know it is a one way ticket to jail and death! Not to mention there is never enough. People that do those hard drugs, basically sale their sould for them, and if they haven't yet, they will! If you have an addictive personality, stay as far away from this kinda of stuff than you can. In my opinion (which this is what this is all about...our opinions and advise from experience, wisdom, THEN YOU MAKE YOU Choice after being educated: Anyone that suggest street drugs as an answer to your situation, is not a friend if you know them, and if you don't...they do not have your best interest in mind. I pomise you that!!

i think its best to get the idea out of your head that there is a magic drug that will solve all your problems

start looking for long term sustainable solutions

ive been diagnosed with general anxiety disorder & depression.
according to wikipedia they used to prescribe opiates for depression.

i know that u can occasionally get benzos for anxiety although it's controversial...

ppl drink coffee. smoke cigarettes. drink alcohol or even do heroin. to self medicate

im just trying to imagine if drugs like opiates for example if u COULD have as many as u needed without the life style that went with it. weather they could be useful or not. i guess it is somewhat speculation but im also looking for advice to in the real world. I do use codeine, valium & a little more occasionally oxy to self medicate for depression. (especially codeine & valium & temazepam which isnt prescribed)

I dont drink any more really & used to do that when I was really anxious & it would work great but always made me feel worse than before the next few days.

I used to use drugs recreationally when i was younger. but now i try to turn to the ones that dont have a come down or a hangover because im trying to just feel normal

Ive tried a few ADs & they seemed to make me more anxious.

Marijuana produces a kind of mind-altering effect, which induces complete rest and sleep. It is regarded as a medical herb because of its potential medical benefits. Marijuana contains at least more than 60 chemicals including cannabinoids. This chemical known as the cannabinoid is use to treat certain kind of medical conditions. When smoked or eaten, the cannabinoid found in marijuana acts on the receptor cells in our brain especially the areas that control our body movement and memory. Marijuana use affects co-ordination and balance thus reducing anxiety and depression.

that's a joke right ^^ ya cant keep using e for every day use. ya serotonin depletes. im sure that was a joke
