So recently my nan got cancer and she's had a load of blood given to her due to the immense amout of operations and shit shes had to go through. As I appreciate she wouldnt even be alive today without that, I feel I'm duty bound to donate blood.

My question is, will they turn me away because I've consumed drugs before? I've never injected anything, but have taken MDMA in the past month, cocaine in the past month, N02 in the last month, and ketamine in the past two weeks. Is there a possibility my blood would give the 'taker' any complications because of this? I don't wana have to 'own up' to taking drugs to some NHS nurse.

I'm giving blood next week. In the questions they only ask about IV drug use as it can spread diseases like HIV. Oral or insufflated drug use should be fine.

Quality. One other thing, should I be waiting say 3 months after taking drugs to ensure they're not in my system, in case it produces adverse medical effects to the doneree? I don't want to make anybody ill.

Can't say I'm qualified to answer that, I can't see why very small trace amounts of drugs would make a difference. People drink heavily all the time but can still give blood when there's traces of alcohol in their blood.

There should be a number you can ring and ask anonymously. I know what you mean about telling nurses/doctors about drug use, you always get a little speech or something.

NO - donate your blood anyway.

The hospital will be screening / cleaning prior to use. Even if you blood is worthless they will simply extract the plasma and use that.

Respect for giving blood! But go ask these questions at your hospital.

I doubt there would be any complications. The main concern is Hepatitis and HIV, which so they say is why gay men are routinely turned down. Anyway I doubt your Nan will be getting your blood direct. What you give is first screened and then goes into a blood bank. And there's plenty of NHS nurses do drugs.

I agree with strutter on this. Do not go and donate blood like a week after you rolled. I would wait 3-6 months like strutter said.

drugs aren't a problem. i used to give blood but recently started iv so now can't if i tell them that, trying to weigh up the ethics of it, considering i don't even use with anyone let alone share things, and that they test it anyway, i see no reason not to. but my arms will probably give it away soo.

I know she isnt going to recieve it directly. But I want to at least donate as a gesture of thanks.

I recently gave blood, and if doing drugs was an issue they would ask about the use. They ask if you have slept with a man who has slept with man, so why not ask if you have done any drugs. They ask you if have have shared needles, but I believe that is for HIV prevention. I would still give blood. And as the others said, if they can't use it, they wont.
