TDS Social thread vs. 2012.1

^^ In Germany it's a traditional gesture to bring bread and salt as a present to a housewarming party. Maybe they want to make up for the missing salt? ;)
 
They bring like $20+ dollars worth of bread every week. French bread baguette, a loaf of swirly pumpernickle, onion buns, the whole works. It's insane. The first week it was only one baguette. We didn't know what to make of it so we made them baked ziti and then they started bringing like bags and bags of it. It's like getting a little extreme our entire refrigerator is full of bread because it's fresh bread and if we don't eat it all the first day it gets hard. It's from the local bakery so they didn't bake it at home or anything. I am trying to get creative with what we can make with bread. Bread pudding, french bread pizza..etc.

lol the missing salt. I have no clue it's so strange.
 
Hello everybody! Sorry I haven't been posting around very much, but I've just been working very hard days so it's sometimes very difficult to find myself to get onto Bluelight and post, even though I do still browse :) How have you all been?
 
^ Totally! That must be it. Either that, or they're in the bread mafia, and they're spreading the 'protection' payments around a bit so that you don't report them to the police cops.

@Bad: Hey! Good to see you mang. I've been up and down a lot, but trying to get back into the swing of things. You must be coming up on exam season soonish? How's that coming?
 
No not yet :) We only have final semester tests, but I've been busy getting all of my Cs back up to B's :D My friend just returned from military school for a short break so we welcomed him back. It was a good time :) Today I'm going to do some driving to get all of my hours in and then get something to eat. What is everyone's favorite kind of sandwich? Mine is a Reuben.

Stardust, I am going to PM you a great bread-using recipe.<3 I am thinking that someone in their household must work at that bakery.

So, tomorrow my husband starts his first chemo treatment. It is so counter-intuitive to pump your body full of chemicals that kill your whole immune system. I know it is the best we have got atm as far as treatment goes (that and immunotherapy) but you just have to shake your head at the incongruity. Chemicals gave you cancer and now we will pump you full of more to treat it. He is being positive so I should be, too.

Hope everybody is seeing spring where they live. It's beautiful here with all the trees blooming.<3

and hay there dood! Oh man it's your favorite holiday then what with this St Pattys Day corned beef celebrationishms. I have had Reubens 2 days in a row and I will probably have one tomorrow too :P. It isn't my favorite sandwich though. I think it is a serious toss up between classic turkey with mayo and roast beef and cheddar =D.

We recently moved into a new town here in FL. It's like a sprawl like development type deal and it's fairly new. My boyfriend and I took a long drive around some older parts of Orlando today. The older towns look absolutely stunning with trees with the spanish moss hanging everywhere. I feel a bit cheated because my town looks like a desert since it's so new there are like no trees. So I am on this mission to purchase trees and plant them all around my house to make a wooded oasis. Zone 9 and 10 have such a limited availability of nice trees though. This could become a time consuming obsession.

Herb please send me some recipes. I am running out of ideas and I feel absolutely horrible throwing it out. I've made croutons and anything else I can think of.

I was wondering about your husband also. I have thought the same thing about chemo and also about operating. Positivity is really important though. I think mindset plays some kind of unseen role. I am sending extra love your guises way. <3<3

cancer isn't an infection though.... cancer is a part of you that starts growing in the wrong way.... chemo therapy is an attempt to kill that part of you before it can damage the good parts of you.
 
Yes, except that we all have abnormal (read: cancerous) cells in us. Normally, those cells are removed by our immune system; in cancer patients the cells, for whatever reason, multiply faster than the immune system can handle them. I seem to recall reading somewhere that there is an upcoming line of therapies that will take advantage of the immune system's capacity to recognize and destroy abnormal cells, but don't quote me on that. Me, I'd put my hopes on dichloroacetate, even though it's still years away from actual use.

stardust.hero: You say that you've done croutons, bread pudding.. anything else? If you've got a huge surplus, you could make them into breadcrumbs, but that seems like a waste of nice, fresh bread. Maybe have a talk with your neighbour?
 
Broadly speaking, the reason cytotoxic chemotherapy agents cause immunosuppression is due to the fact that blood cells are generated very quickly, much like the out of control cancer cells. The faster a cell reproduces, the more sensitive it is to chemotherapy drugs. Which generally work by causing base pair substitutions in the cells DNA which are not repairable, this triggers apoptosis in the cell.

A side note is that many chemotherapy agents are them selves also carcinogens, due to the fact they damage and change DNA, sometimes leading to a secondary neoplasm a later time. As is of course radiotherapy. But still, they are effective treatments. I send my best wishes to you and your husband and hope the cancer goes into permanent remission.

Sorry for the rambling, I've been up all night with rangrz helping him study subject matter very much related to this.

And now I am off to start another 65 hour week. :/
 
@Stardust.hero - I love the east cost because of all of the vegetation as well. When I go up to visit my family in Philadelphia I really love to see all of the overgrown areas

As far as I'm aware isn't there a gene that stops functioning that's meant to regulate cell growth?

You're right, although I can't remember the name of the gene. There are a number of cell cycle regulation genes, any of which could contribute to cancer if they are not working properly. The one I think you're referencing is a tumor-suppressor protein that increasing in number when DNA is damaged. It stops the cell cycle at interphase so that the cell has time to repair its damaged DNA, and will trigger apoptosis (programmed cell death) if the damage is too much and can't be repaired.

EDIT: Ah, Wikipedia tells me the gene I'm talking about is p53. (yay science)
 
With regard to cancer - the word simply refers to cells multiplying at an accelerated rate. Studies of one gene that correlates with increases in growth/multiplication of cells have not generally given answers beyond speculation. Chemotherapy is analogous to throwing a bunch of water on an active fire. It works sometimes, but not others, and it has its own consequences as described above. Chemotherapeutic agents work on rapidly growing cells - most obvious would be the hair loss seen in many/most persons who undergo chemotherapy. Hair grows at approximately the rate of 1/2 inch per month.

Dave, I read the abstract you posted regarding the metabolic modulation of glioblastoma. I see much promise and many lives being saved with further research into stem cells - this approach to the treatment of cancer with stem cells is well worth exploring. The human immune system is a subject for which I have a fascination. /nerd ;)

This is a heavily politicized issue in my country, and it shouldn't be.

How is everyone doing today? I'm trying to make a good decision regarding both housing and career. Wish me luck, please... I surely need it!

Not all abnormal cell reproduction is termed cancer. Cancer refers to neoplasms which invade surrounding tissue. Ones which are not invasive are generally termed benign tumors, and ones which are developing towards becoming invasive are carcinoma in situ.

The gene(s) which code for telomerase are frequently expressed to an abnormal level in many different cancers. Expression of telomerase can lead to cells being able to reproduce endlessly, as the usual shortening of the telomeres no longer occurs and hence the genome of the cell stays intact for an infinite number of reproduction cycles, failing to trigger the apoptosis that happens once the telomeres are gone and the reproduction cycle begins to damage the genome. Example: The Cervical cancer cell line "Hela" one of the more popular and famous cell lines.

@rangrz: But... if we can figure out how to express telomerase without inciting cancer, we've then cured one of the main causes of senescence. Damn but wouldn't that be cool!
 
Hey, those are some cool neighbors... sounds like my own. So far, neighbors in my building (huge brick house broken up into 10 apartments) have shared:

- Cups of sugar
- Christmas eggs
- Leftover Valentine's day candy
- Vegan meals for a nursing mom with a newborn and 9 year old
- Beer
- Veggie burgers over open pit fire

Other gestures included, such as bringing each others' laundry up from the basement, dog sitting (I had a neighbor's dog for the last 3 nights while he was out of state at punk shows :D), Cirque de Soleil spots on the guest list....


Have you asked them about the origin of the bread yet?
 
Oh man that's an impressive list of awesome things neighbors do.

We have a fairly large lawn so we bought a riding lawn mower and we noticed the other day that our neighbor was in his garage and it looked like he was trying to fix his lawn mower so we were going to tell him he was welcome to use ours whenever he wanted. And my boyfriend and I were joking that it was going to turn into a kind gesture war and he'd be over here cleaning our windows in the morning and we'd be over there power washing his house and it would just spiral out of control.

I guess maybe we should ask about the origin of the bread. Having kind neighbors is awesome. At our old house our neighbors really sucked so it's such a pleasant change.
