The EADD Linux Technical Gibberings Thread

Felix,
Had a look at Cinnamon. Looks nice, but it is essentially Gnome 3 which is noticeably slower in terms of UI compared to XFCE or LDXE. Couldn't work out if you're running Cinnamon on 'Ted' ? If so, you may want to try out XFCE. Chief Penguin abuser Linus Torvald uses it. Nuff said. [/CODE]

This should work on debian based systems. Logout and log back in, picking the new xfce desktop option.
Warning. The UI contains mice.

Yep. I initially used Mint's 'MGSE', which is Gnome 3 with added old-skool goodness and is included with Mint 12 as standard. Cinnamon improves things even further, I absolutely love it.

Words cannot express just how fucking important the choice of Cinnamon was when putting Mint on Kate's laptop. The transition from Win7 has been unbelievably trouble-free so far - if it wasn't, I would be in the doghouse and it wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes. :D It's ease of use trumps any slight deficiences in performance in this situation (and it performs beautifully, anyway).

Big Ted is currently running LXDE on Mint 11. it's still a bit sluggish (only half a gig memory being the cause, no doubt), so I'm gonna wipe it and give Arch a go. I'll try out fluxbox on watson's recommendation and have a look at xfce too.

Of course, the beauty of Linux is you can try it and ditch it if you don't like it! From terminal:
Code:
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
not if I'm putting Arch on it. ;)

I use Ubuntu 11.04, works wonders I really like it. Started using Linux Mint 7 back in 2009, then I switched to 8 and then made the jump to Ubuntu.

I think I agree entirely with what you're saying about Canonical and Unity. I'm just treating myself to a quick BL break in an otherwise hideously busy day so I'll leave it at that. :)

sounds like we're going through the same journey here, so I might have experienced the same minor problems as yourself recently - what are they?

It's mainly what appears to be the screen redrawing slowly and it's most apparent in Chromium- opening a new tab will quite often make the entire area inside the Chromium window go white for a second or two and it's pot luck as to whether the system will accept any keystrokes or other input made during that time. So I can pop up a new tab, start typing the URL and only some of the letters I hit will make it into the field by the time it's detwisted its knickers. It's not the end of the world but I do find myself thinking 'got to fix that...' several times a day.

It happens with other apps too but it's most noticeable in Chromium. Sometimes the outlines which appear when I'm dragging a window will 'stick' on screen as well, or launching an app or doing something processor heavy will cause an app or panes within an app (eg Inbox in Evolution) to white out for a second or so.

What problems are you experiencing?

OK, it doesn't take a linux expert to do some basic troubleshooting here. :D

what kinda processor and video card do you have? how much memory? does this happen in Firefox? does it happen when the only app running is Chromium?

What problems are you experiencing?

not much now.

sometimes, in FF, when you right-click on an image, and select 'copy image location', the paste option doesn't appear in the right-click context menu when you attempt to put that text elsewhere (such as on BL). this is such a bizarrely specific issue, I can't narrow it down to firefox, or vbulletin, or bluelight, or the place hosting the image. very minor!

can't think of anything else since I moved to Mint.
Why Arch? I've never used it. Heard it's 'minimal' but nothing like puppylinux if you want lightweight & functional ;)

cos watsons keeps bugging me to try a non-ubuntu based distro and I'm feeling ready to try something a bit more challenging. I'm resisting the urge to throw money at Big Ted by increasing his memory, and I want to see if these so-called 'lightweight' distros are as good as the linux nerds say they are. I like fresh computer challenges and Big Ted is unemployed, so he's got nothing better to do right now. Much like his owner. ;)

I fancy having a bash at installing/using something like Arch Linux in order to learn. I've got little experience other than Ubuntu but everyone knows that doesn't count. Once I get some dosh I might have to invest in an old laptop. I don't fancy dual boot atm.

Use easybcd instead of shitty grub or lilo to dual boot!
Been a gods gift since I found out about it.

Why do you say Ubuntu 'doesn't count'??? Of course it does. And why don't you fancy dual booting?

Most distros will happily live on a partition of about 20GB, with plenty of room to spare. Try out some of the Live CDs on the go and see if you like any of them.

I hoped you'd turn up, Arnold.

No offence - you might be a GNU/Linux god amongst men, but you're terrible at explaining things to us mere mortals.

What is wrong with GRUB, now? :?

Ubuntu does all the hard work for you. I'd have to break it myself to learn anything. I've tried various live cds and even ran some distros with VMware. I just like having my 'main' operating system running at all times - I've no idea why now I think about it? I just feel if I had a computer dedicated to running Linux it provides a greater incentive to learn/solve problems.

You've followed through with this mate? It looks pretty interesting I must have a go some point.

Ubuntu and Fedora are good platforms for home use. My first experience of *nix was (in the work environment) Solaris. Ugh, just, ugh.

Glad how much Linux has come on in recent years - it's almost ready to take on Microsoft and OSXs (yeah, yeah I know) share of the market.

DS: Nup. Always kinda half-arsed fancied it cos no matter how deeply lacking in ability you are you can still find ways to bitch about stuff and be at least partially convinced you could improve on 'em given an opportune tinker.

One day...

Or probably not.

Well, what is your intention?

To have a stable OS? to learn a different OS? to have a choice? to fuck about in general?

I'm fucking delighted to have a beautifully working machine to work on (Mint/Cinnamon), and my spare Big Ted to learn new stuff on and challenge myself. That's why I'm doing this. :)

Shambles - you still on Windows?

What is wrong with GRUB, now? :?
I had major problems with grub and lilo recognizing a 64 bit Windows 7 OS, so after a few re-installations of both OS and trying to reload lilo and grub I found http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/ which allowed me to install windows after installing mandriva and just pointed it to the partitions and sorted.
Even if you don't have problems now they can occur in the future if you resize a partition/ mbr gets fucked up so keep that link handy;)and it ain't just me being a thicko I'm not the only one who had major problems with both boot loaders. Easybcd goes on top of them and hasn't fucked up here yet.

Yup :(

But patience wears thin... stims would probably help in the arsedness stakes if not the competence ones.

Suspect some kinda dualboot will be the aim. Am a bugger for fiddling tho so may merk a mullion or two on the way - good thing about free stuff is you don't mind breaking it so much.

thanks for the link. but am I right in thinking that isn't open source?

haven't had problems here with Win7 64-bit (yet) but will bear it in mind. :)
