after having a bit of a crazy youtube session, been listening to sum iggy pop, alice cooper, stranglers etc... i noticed iggy n alice especially are real performers on stage!
whats your opinion for what band or solo artist are the best on stage performers?

i got a feeling we will see pink floyd appear a few times here aswell!

Metallica in their prime, the energy is insane just from watching a video. I think I would have had a heart attack from the hype if I seen them live during their earlier years.

I used to be a real metal head in the 80's & 90's and I was very impressed by Guns N Roses when I went to see them live.
Both Slash and Axl were very lively on stage and put on a great show.

You can't beat Metallica playing "Battery" live.
Such a fast and powerful song, that and 'Master of Puppets ' will always be in my top 10.

Adam Beyer, Dave Clarke, Tiga, PRODIGY, Oasis, Benga, Underworld.... Just based on personal experiances at festivals/club nights etc

Iggy Pop is friggin' intense at an age he has no right to have reached. Saw The Stooges a few years ago and from the second he burst onstage it was impossible to look anywhere else.

I rate performance in terms of energy.

Rage Against The Machine at Reading 2000 stands out for me. Followed a close second by System Of A Down at Ozzfest 2002.

The adrenaline rushes were insane. Got punched & kicked in the head & couldn't feel a fucking thing! %)

Depends whether we're talking about the theatrical / visual aspects rather than the intensity of the performance on a musical level.

Obviously there are performers who manage both of these simultaneously, and there have been since long before the inception of rock 'n' roll. Neil Young blew me away a few years ago musically, but to look at he was just a sixtysomething guy (albeit a very energetic one) up onstage with a guitar. Kevin Shields barely looked up from the floor on any of the occasions I've watched him perform, yet it was difficult to take your eyes off him at times. Conversely, I saw Kiss a long time ago (yeah, it seemed like it'd be a laugh, okay?) and while the stage show and atmosphere were electric, it could well have been a bar band up on the stage and it wouldn't have made a world of difference.

There are far too many to mention without making some fairly criminal ommissions, so I'll leave it to others. Glad to see Iggy gets a mention though.

I've been thinking as the coffee goes down and I can't think of anyone I've seen who has rivalled Iggy for sheer energy and stage presence.

Kraftwerk at Brixton Academy was one of the best gigs I've been to but it was a completely different kettle of fish. Much more like a Soviet era cult of personality type ceremony or religious experience featuring pounding electronic music.

Nightmares on Wax were surprisingly excellent and involving live when I saw them back in 2000 or thereabouts, I think that was at the Forum.

Lou Reed doing Berlin at the Royal Albert Hall and Brian Wilson at the Royal Festival Hall were both stupendous concerts but in both cases that had more to do with them being idols of mine than the quality of their performances. Iggy particularly stunned me as I wasn't a Stooges fanboi before attending and was expecting far less.

Yeah, I think expectations and your familiarity with / enthusiasm for a performer can have a profound influence on your overall experience.

Indeed, I think Lou Reed in particular would have been rubbish if I wasn't in awe of him. Found my diary from the time the other day- 'pot belly, skinny arms, tired old tortoise face, appeared to be mumbling to himself in between songs'.

Verve before Ashcroft became a wanker living in the Cotswolds.

Followed them around before they were famous, the proverbial two men and a dog at some gigs. Saw them at New Cross Venue in London though and for some reason there were quite a few there. Stood next to a 6ft brickshithouse grebo watching them and half way through he turned to me and said, with tears in his eyes, 'they're beautiful, just beautiful' as Man Called Sun spread around the hall.

And he was right.

marilyn manson (yes mr warner himself) i would say would put on an amazing show, just look at guns gods and government tour, looked unreal, even see him huffing a wee nitrous mask halfway through :D

best performances ive seen was from 2 local bands, one being called mental deficiency, insanity in band form, look them up on youtube, the other band being called Kasper Rosa, the show ended with the bassist ontop their PA system, standing tall above everyone, them ready to catch him if he fell, i sat on the grass and watched the entire performance and was mesmerized, was like a hurricane of sound sweeping the festival field, what made it even better was the 3 tabs of acid

Oh yeah, I forgot about Lightning Bolt, they are absolutely incredible live. One guy on bass with effects which allow him to sound like lead guitar when necessary and one of the best drummers I've ever seen, usually wearing some kind of home made fright mask with voice changing electronics in it:
