Not sure! Directions anyone??
Going to head to thailand by myself in late may and was thinking about just relaxing on a beach and was after some advice:

where to stay?
whats it cost?
should I book something or just rock up there and look for ?
whats worth a look?
any tips?

thanks in advance.

^^LMFAO^^
im going in march with a group of people. For me and 1 other person return it cost me 1719.92 ( i don't think that saying the price of a plane ticket is against the rules if it is mods please remove :) )
I cant really tell you where a good place to stay is cos tbh i cant rember the name of the hotel but it looks fucking great!Look online im sure you will find a great hotel at a pretty good price. There would be nothing worse than being in a foreign country and not being able to find a decent place to stayI'll try to get the name in the next couple of days. Not very expensive if i rember right...
We've all been told to bring about 2 grand (were going for about 2 weeks) along with us but im taking 3-5k.
If you want a great view go to maya bay witch is in Ko Phi Phi Leh on Thailand’s east coast pretty close to Phuket. It's where the movie "the beach" was filmed it has glassclear water that is completely flat. Large, jungle-covered cliffs that nearly surround the entire bay a great veiw to say the least.
DONT BUY DURGS over there only do it if you know a local (luckly a family friend lives there and said he would take me to some opium dens :p )and even then its a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE risk you dont wanna spend 1 day in a thai jail......Hope this helps mate happy flying :)

I stayed at the Millennium Resort Patong Phuket which I highly recommend. It joins on to one of the biggest shopping malls in Phuket - Jungceylon Shopping Complex. Also, from the Millennium Hotel you can see the major nightlife districts of Bangla Road and Rat-U-Thit Road.

You've also got Patong beach which is a 5 minute walk, then for a really chilled out day, head over to Phi Phi Island. I think it would be better if you actually booked accommodation before you go.

If you go to Phuket, You've got the elephant rides, ride the 4WD motorbikes through the jungle to go see the "Big Buddah". Also, the "Ultra Fast Go Karts" in Phuket are awesomeeeeeee.

Just use common sense too. No Drugs, Don't go down some dodgy alleyway to get a tattoo because chances are you will either get mobbed or come back to Australia with HIV.

Most ladyboys are easy to spot, some are not :p

been watching the 'big trouble in thailand' shows and the place sounds and looks amazing, i'd love to go there sometime. Don't know if the show is a scare campaign or not, but it shows alot of lady boys and rorts some of the locals pull on tourists, and inside some of the jails. Might be worth a watch if you havent seen it. There's a fair bit on lady boys and how some work in gangs and drug some tourists sometimes and rip them off, they need to pay for that hormone treatment and breast implants somehow. hehe

^ Again, its all about using your common sense. I'm sure those things often happen, but most likely to the drunken tourist who wonders off on their own. Your best bet is to keep an eye out, be cautious and do some research; find out where the good/bad places are.

yeah no doubt there are millions more who have good times and dont get into any types of trouble.

I saw something on the news tonight about some guys who went over there for NYE and one guy got a tattoo and then some OTC medication and has died sadly.

wow, I couldn't find that article, but there's many articles of scary shit happening over there online.

Aussie tourists jump as Thai boat sinks

"It was horrible."

Mr O'Ryan says the crew were ill-equipped to deal with the situation.

"We didn't get told what to do about life jackets or where they were," he said.

"We had to find them ourselves, wack them onto the kids, and about 10 minutes later we were jumping into the Indian Ocean."

Mr O'Ryan says he should have spent more time checking out the operator before booking the charter.

"The boat and crew were completely ill equipped for an emergency," he said.

"There were no flares and no radio on board, so if we weren't able to wave another boat down there would have been no way of telling anyone we were in trouble.

"They don't give a s--- about safety. It's just all money to them," he said.

It's all just money to them? Ha! Isn't Thailand pretty much a 3rd world country? They can't afford the luxury of safety and that's why things are cheap over there. Buy the ticket, take the ride!! :p

yeah same with Bali i guess. I'm not anti thailand, i wanna go there eventually. Fucking commitments!

I don't see the point in even thinking about drugs over there. I mean, sure, it would be awesome to trip or what have you over there in the jungle/beach/clubs etc etc but booze is sooooooooooo cheap. Just drink like there's no tomorrow.

You're screwed if you don't like the booze though :p Kratom and OTC psuedo are options but not worth the risk imo.

I've only just seen this thread! Heading off to work now, but i'll definitely be back to post my experiences. I've been to Thailand twice and have been to a number of regions now :) I will say where you end up will depend entirely on what kind of trip you want - partying, something more chilled, etc.

Wheres some good chill out spots? alls i know of is maya bay

Thanks everyone for your help. ( except you silent - you better start looking over your shoulder come fri night 8( )

Booked flights to and from phuket but thats all at this stage and have 8 nights in thailand. ( going to singapore first for 4 nights for a wedding )

Figure as its the end of may its the low season so hoping it will be a bit quieter. Mate suggested going to krabi but decided on phuket as it was cheaper and easier to get to. Thought i could always get out of phuket and go to one of the islands if i get bored.

And for the record not interested in drugs. Well alcohol is a drug and apparently cheap so that will do me.

Two questions I have:

What do you do about cash overseas? Have heard banks charge a fortune to use ATM's overseas? Is one credit card enough or should you have a spare?

Can you buy rollie tobbacco in thailand ? I hate tailor mades.

Three more questions:

Anyone had trouble with thier passport photo? My passport photo is old. Had really short hair and facial hair at the time. Now shoulder length dreadlocks and clean shaven. You have to apply for new passport if you want to change photo so would rather save the 230 bucks for the holiday.

Suggestions for travel insurance?

Do i need to get some shots from the doc before i go ?

Ill usually take out enough Aussie $ before I go and then get the small money exchange places to exchange it into their currency. Keep an eye on them though. I've seen them try and slip the one or two notes under the table. Really sly, but easy to catch if you don't take your eyes off the money.

As for the tobbacco, I think I've seen it at Changi Airport but not 100%. When your in Thailand though, I'm pretty sure there all tailor made :\

As for the passport photo, I look like a serial killer; messy hair, unshaven, grease marks all over my face..I looked completely different when I went through customs and didn't have any problems.

Personally, I wont go anywhere without taking out Travel Insurance. You never know if something will happen. It's a good idea if your going Elephant Riding, Motocross through the jungle..those kind of things..I wouldn't worry about getting shots from your Doc, but you could always get his opinion.
