So you're saying that every "rocker" or musician or poet or lyricist that you like has to stand up to the quality of the very best before them or they are just shit? Bullshit. You're talking nonsense & using a point that you wouldn't apply to half the stuff you listen to to say that Doherty is shit. Fair enough, say you don't like him & that you think he's shite, you're welcome to your (incorrect ;)) opinion, but that attempt at validating it was piss poor.
 
I think a lot of rock'n roll is about more than the music.

Pete Doherty didn't really appeal to me, but I can see his charisma, if enough people see that charisma, and get something from the music, and believe him to be rock'n'roll, then fuck yeah, he's rock'n'roll!

And a couple of libertines/babyshambles/pd tracks have been pretty good, even if i say so begrudgingly. Wouldn't play anything by them deliberately, but sometimes a track'll come on the radio, or at a mate's house, and they not as bad as i'd wish they were.

At the very least, all the names preceding Doherty made good music. Doherty was shit at music. He also looked like a chump. He wasn't very good at looking rock 'n' roll. Ergo, Doherty was a chump.

Why does he have to look rock n roll? What does rock n roll look like? Your preconceived notion of the way the musicians you like look?

I like Doherty's music & not because I've bought into some media-hype & the whole perceived junkie coolness. I originally dismissed him & The Libertines as just a smackhead that people think is cool because he falls about wrecked all the time & gets out his face. Then I actually listened to the music & liked it, I saw/read interviews with him & changed my opinion on him.

In my opinion a good proportion of Babyshambles/Libertines stuff is good. Will I come back & listen to it in 20 years? Chances are I won't. There's not two levels when it comes to music - Completely timeless or utter shite. Will I come back & listen to the Loco Dice mix that I'm listening to right now? I'm pretty sure I won't even come back to it in 5 years, does it mean that it's shite? No. I'm enjoying it right now. I probably won't enjoy it when I'm 50 but so fuck?
