You fucking know, I post it enough
Not quite sure if this deserves it's own thread yet, as I haven't completed my work. I'll post the symbols that make up the language when I completed the whole thing and made it work.

I've got 12 main symbols so far and then some two additional symbols that attach to the main symbols to slightly change the meaning of the main symbols, or to ask questions.

I need a few other small symbols that will attach to the main ones for other features, such as masculine or feminine, and other forms of punctuation. They will come soon though.

I don't know why I'm so excited about my new language, lol. It just seems like a fun project to do.

I'll post the main 12 symbols later tonight when I get a chance to draw them in mspaint, or take a photo of them with my webcam.

If anyone has any suggestions for things that are really needed in a new written language, fundamental things that I might not have thought of to make it work then please suggest them here.

If not then just laugh at crazy Mugz again for another of his crazy ideas =D

hahahahahHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA LOL

=D

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>the fundamental thing you've missed is that language, both written and verbal, evolves and has evolved over thousands of year and many generations. Not just been thunk up by some druggy with a bit of a free weekend to doodle.

Nice idea for a wee hobby/project though. You should try to verablise it too!

Erm... what can I say? Interesting endeavour you've got going on there, Mugz. ;)

So is this to be the kind of language in which we could one day hope to see faithful renderings of the complete works of Shakespeare or (whisper it) a satifactory translation of Rimbaud? Or is it going to be a more utilitarian affair, designed purely to facilitate the kind of basic dialogue necessary for commerce and the like?

Moreover, what do you want this language to achieve which other existing languages have failed to deliver, if anything?

I know those are questions rather than suggestions, but bear with me.

There is a lot Mugz - to give one random example: In English, we always say "the big brown bag", not "the brown big bag". There are SO many unwritten (lol) rules, most of which we are unaware of unless we study linguistics.. word order, how words change depending on what other words they are next to, tenses etc... the example I gave is a random and not so important one really, but it would sound odd if someone said the second phrase. Would your language copy our structure just with different words/letters?

Tolkein invented his own language but I think it took him a while, haha...

You know those psychological test thingies, asking you to respond to various statements with ranges from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Well one of the statements i have seen was "I have invented my own langauage". I cant remember though what is was meant to be a symptom of, i think it was either creative genius or Schizophrenia lol. I think some people would argue theres not much difference.

I dont take those things too seriously though...

It is going to be more of a language where basic dialogue can be exchanged, preferrable with the least amount relating to commerce though. More of a language where phrases can be written and exchanged and understood. I intend to perfect it more before I post any of the symbols first though and then post a few phrases with the symbols next to the phrases and some explanations of the symbols and their meanings.

There will be more than one word or phrase or thought in each symbol, but there will be adjoining marks that will differentiate which is being intended in that particular sentence. It will obviously grow with time as every language does over time but at the start it will be pretty basic in form and will be open to suggestion and thought.

I don't really know what I intend to achieve from this, other than just having some fun inventing a new language that works :D I would really like to create the language, then post all of the symbols and meanings, and then post a few phrases and the meanings of those phrases, and then post a phrase/sentence and see if people can understand the language well enough to understand what is meant by it.

Word orders and tenses won't be as important as most languages today, as even when a foreign person says something in the wrong way, say when a french person says "can I have a flower red" please you know what he means. It is going to start of basic, but understandable.

There are no words or letters, it is going be purely based on symbols, like the old languages, the ancient egyptian ones for example. There will be no As Es Is Os or Us or any other alphabetical letter in the language. Just symbols that represent words/ideas/phrases/sentences and then smaller symbols that are there to point the reader to the meaning of the full sentence/phrase.

I showed one of the first two phrases that I have come up with with the language that I have created to a friend today and he said it was very creative and was genuinely impressed. The phrase was "I fear you" or "I am scared of you" and one symbol which means why changed the whole phrase to "Why am I afraid of you?" He totally understood the language that I created with just that one example and wished me luck in finishing it. It is going to be fun trying to make this work :)

In regards to schizophrenia and creative genius, there is a fine line. It actually used to be my signature before sigs were taken away from us.

"There is a fine line between genius and insanity, and I am walking that line"

To be honest Mugz, this seems like a pretty pointless endeavour...

I'd invest the time instead with learning Latin. I mean at least then you'll know a dead language that has some purpose rather than inventing your own...

Why waste my time learning a dead language that when I can do something creative. I think doing something creative and creating something original and unique has got to be more rewarding than to quote the film "A Beautiful Mind" memorizing the weak assumptions of lesser mortals. and also Find the truly original idea

Creativity and innovation are what I am going for, not learning a dead language that I really don't believe has any purpose.

What you doing in here anyway tripman? ;) checking up on me since I left BDD? 8)

tbh this is the sort of thing i would expect from Mugz. Btw How are the Screenplays going mate and did you get that camera;)

hahaha, yes mate, you are right that I often have massive ideas and big intentions but fail to finish or meet up to them. I can't afford a camera right now, but I'm going back and forth to the screenplay when I have time and I have ideas for different ones too.

I'd argue that learning Latin is a great route to understanding our own language, other languages and the connections between them which can be extremely enlightening and rewarding. However, it's not taught very well when it is taught and most people have better things to do with their lives.

Mugz man, I'm intrigued by this language. I think you're going to find it difficult to find converts (look at Esperanto) but I admire your creativity and desire to flex the grey muscle. Hope you're doing well.

You are a fucking muppet. I'm sorry, it has to be said. Everyone's being too nice. They're all thinking it. Sort yourself out & do something proper if you want to invest a lot of time in something creative. Surely you can see that inventing your own language is a completely & utterly fucking ridiculous thing to even consider, never mind actually attempt to do.

Plus, you'll waste a maximum of a week on this before dropping it, so why even waste that week?

If I told someone I know that I was going to do this they'd obviously think I was taking the piss, if they eventually realised that I was serious they would tell me to go see the doctor. Seriously.

Learn Latin or an old Germanic language. Learn a second language and try to get good at it. I've been learning Spanish as my second language for eight or nine years now and only now am I able to communicate with it on a level that I feel confident and comfortable with. Fluently? Nope, but almost as well as I speak English. Almost. With learning a second language comes understanding of the language's source culture(s) and the more or less unlimited tiny little nuances and rules for rules that go against the normal rules (English is famous for having lots of rules that contradict themselves, but English is certainly not the only language for which this is the case.)

Think about how long it takes to learn a language...

My point is, creating a language from scratch is, well, nearly impossible. While creating a cipher or pictograph system would be much easier, and sounds like what you're actually on planning on doing...it is not creating a language.

I agree that this is a cool idea but it sounds like a pipe dream. A language is an extremely complex thing, not something you can "invent" by assigning symbols and icons for ideas and words in another language (in this case, English).
Do you see my point? Does anybody?

well if you had met mugz when you had the chance it would all make sense;)

Glad you pointed out that this is essentially mapping a new cipher on to English, which underlines the fact that our thinking (as well as the ability to articulate it) is itself constrained by language.

Hands-free semaphore, Mugz? I'm sure there's a demand. ;)
