so i found out the other day im gonna be a dad for the first time and while this leaves me very excited however im also a little troubled... does this mean i got to give up my habits? i frequently use concerta and adderall and i smoke weed along with the odd painkiller or benzo... now i know i cant just go through an 8th and pop some klonopin along with a norco and be totally wrecked but is it allright for a parent to use so long as they are responsible about it? im sure some of you have kids and im wondering what type of rules you have for drug use in your house.

congratulations and welcome to bluelight.

a baby is entirely dependent on you, so you can't compare responsible use now with responsible use as a new parent. it's hard work, and it takes up almost all of your time for the first few months. even after then, it would pose a great risk if you're nodding or not quite on full faculty of your senses.

kids are a high and a trip unto themselves, there's no need for the chems tbh. :D

what's your definition of 'responsible about it'?

your life is about to be turned upside down. a baby is 100% dependent on you for months, years... maybe you need to have a think about what's important and consider that it might be time to put what your baby needs before what you want?

i guess it depends on your level of usage, but in my experience, when my son was born i just really didn't feel like getting fucked up knowing that a human life was totally in my hands. puffin a bowl from time to time isn't an issue, but getting completely wrecked is. if you're asking this question, you probably already know the answer.

congrats on the kid. being a dad is the greatest thing ever.

so happy to hear about the new mommies...congratulations fawkes!!! and lefty...only a few days, soooo happy for you <3

well my life has always revolved around my two incredible sons, and i couldn't imagine being a mom to a girl, but i better start imagining it!! we get a little princess in march and i can't wait. it is a little surreal, we were shocked at the ultrasound, i just "knew" it was going to be another boy :D never liked being so wrong.

good luck everyone!

This message is for Fawkes and anyone else who may need to take "weekly injections to prevent pre-term labor":

If those injections are of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), please consider your health in addition to the baby's. I know things have changed since the mid- to late-1980s, but when my mother was pregnant with my brother, she took HGH to remain pregnant. She carried him to term and also developed quite the tumor on her brain that has drastically altered her personality. My grandma (her mother) has told me that my mom is not the same person she was before the tumor developed and was subsequently removed.

I don't know how specifically my mother was able to carry me (I was the second pregnancy) as long as she did (about 26 weeks), but I was delivered 3 1/2 months early. Yeah, it was an uphill battle, but I'm here with no serious health concerns. No HGH needed for that pregnancy. Not to mention, with the advances in medical technology, preemies have a much greater chance of living nowadays.

So, while I know that during pregnancy, everything is about the baby, please keep your own health in mind if a doctor wants you to take HGH, or really any other hormones--You don't know what the repercussions may be. <3

so much good news all around! congrats DarthMom!!

thank you for the very enlightening (yet concerning) info, addictivepersona! that's very scary stuff! and i'm so sorry about the health issues and personality change your mom experienced.

the injections to prevent pre-term labor would actually be progesterone. regular hormone injections is not a route i'd like to pursue; i actually stopped using BCP a couple of years ago because of negative side-effects. though, because everything is going so well now and that is not a currently recommended treatment option, i'll cross that bridge if i come to it. though, again, thank you for the information. certainly something to seriously consider should that eventually be a recommended course.

thanks again for the well-wishes, all! <3

^ No problem. It is quite scary. :-/

I don't know much about progesterone, but certainly cross that bridge after doing research only if it comes down to it (and hopefully it doesn't!). :)

quick post from china to say i can't believe how big he is.

there will be pics.

This is it. The doctor has given his orders, and I'm going into the hospital now. Wish us well.

omigoodness!!! what an unbelievably exciting time, MDAO! :D sending my well-wishes to you and your new family! <3 i'm waiting with eager anticipation for your next update!

Two identical girls and a boy (who looks pretty damn identical to his sisters!) were delivered safely and without incident by C-section this morning to Mr. and Mrs. MDAO of the greater New York area. The girls were 3lbs 3 and 4 oz, while the boy was 3 lbs 7 oz, meaning my wife had almost 10lbs of baby in her, not counting all the other extra tissue that goes along. She went 33 wks -- not bad for multiples. They're in the neonatal ICU for ventilatory support, since all premies have underdeveloped and not very pliable lungs. But they're otherwise quite healthy. All 4 grandparents made it in, one by one, to say hello and hold each baby's hand, and it was a very happy occasion all around.

My wife was supposed to get spinal anesthesia. But they'd just given her subcutaneous heparin yesterday because they didn't know she was about to go into labor, so they gave her ketamine instead. She had the emptiest look in her eyes and not quite coherent speech when I greeted her fresh out of the OR, and she was zoned for a few hours after that. I ended the day telling her it'd been momentous. She told me for her it was a blur. I'm sure it'll be different once she rests up and is able to walk down to the NICU and see her babies for the first time.

congrats!!! i'm glad to hear that everyone's healthy and look forward to reading updates about your new family. i can only imagine how surreal it must be for you to be a father of three now!! :) :) :)
