Well i have a speech this friday, 11/18 and i've always had public speaking anxiety. It sometimes got pretty bad but it wasn't a horrible case of it. I just recently started seeing improvements in anxiety i would have a couple days before the speech and its pretty much gone which is awesome! well i was wondering what pills are best used to help public speaking anxiety and at what dose? like which medication, or medications in combination will GREATLY reduce the anxiety i have with public speaking ? Im perscribed 10 mg labatalol which is a non selective beta and alpha 1 blocker, pretty cool now that i learn that beta blockers help with your heart rate and the shaking etc. It'd be nice to get your guys' experience/stories with using medications for public speaking and what really worked for you. OHHH and availabily is never an object, major connects :)

double OHHH, which beta blocker works best? labatalol or propanalol? peace.and.pot

Propanalol is the most commonly used but in general, a beta blocker would likely be your best bet.

Agreed. Propranolol is the most commonly used for 'stage fright', and works very well for social anxiety. The lowering of your heart rate/BP truely helps lower your nervousness and increase your effectiveness in executing your public address.

Benzodiazepines are also an option, but you must take into account the inherent risks associated with those, such as blackouts, addiction potential, etcetera.

If you were to go to the benzo route, though, I would recommend either 0.5 mg clonazepam or 10mg diazepam. But if you have access to propranolol, that would be your best bet in my opinion.

Good luck!

Yea i think im going to take the propranolol instead of labatalol.

I take labatalol every day do you think that would effect my tolerance with propranolol?

I definatatly was going to go with benzo's as i experienced nothing bad with them. I currently can get just plain ol' Xanax bars, love em but i rarely ever take them only on special occasions so addiction and all that good stuff shouldn't be a problem.

thanks!

Funny topic haha, I experimented with this for like a full year (communications minor). Xanax and valium were great for relieving anxiety, but they made me less aware and less enthusiastic, so the quality of the speech really suffered.

Coke, adderall, and other stims were great for relieving anxiety AND they made me more passionate, but anything longer than 15 minutes, I'd crash and mess up the whole speech.

I'm sure you know it's different for every person though, just gotta find what helps you the most

i would love to do presentations on adderall because just like you it makes me much more passionate in what i say almost like i want to get my message out even if its just a casual conversation with a friend lol. But for some wierd reason when im rolling on adderall i ALWAYS stumble my words i dont know if any one has experienced this, it feels like im talking faster than i can think of the words so im just off by a little bit lol its quite funny sometimes because ill stumble on a single word and repeat it like 4 or 5 times which would make me look pretty damn dumb in front of people doing a presentation. lol

I used to take a bunch of valium and codeine before having a speech, it kinda sucked though cause i would take it during gym and would be absolutely useless.

Just take a shot or two of something 80 proof before you speech.

Liquid confidence.

0.5mg Xanax or 0.5mg Klonopin. Add 2.5 to 5mg of either hydrocodone or oxycodone if needed. The benzos will calm the flightiness and the opioids will make you more social if your not tolerant. Alcohol is way to sloppy if your even slightly unsure of how you handle with it and if people smell it there is literally no way to explain it vs the "I have a prescription" argument everyone has. Adderall and an opioid if your experienced with both...but if the Adderall comes on too strong you'll get all nervous and the opioid will side step and just relieve pain...though the Adderall will give you more passion but it could alwaysturnintowordsalid adneveryonetcouldstoplsiengnting to you....lol

Betablockers are almost "the poor mans route" imo. I have never taken them but they reduce anxiety by inhibiting some neurotransmitters on a more physical level which is okay I guess but benzos like xanax and klonopin when taken correctly will slam anxiety in the face like a sock full of lead locks...

Any of the benzos would help, I'd recommend 0.5 mg Xanax, 1 mg Ativan, 10 mg Valium, 0.25 mg Klonipin if you choose a benzo. Barbiturates could help if you have access to any, like butalbital, take 50 mg if you choose this. Opiates could help, but take only a low dose e.g. 5 mg oxycodone. Psychostimulants like methylphenidate or amphetamines could also help, again I'd choose a lowish dose with these e.g. 10 mg methylphenidate or maybe 5 mg amphetamines. All of these are potentially addictive, but some may lead to a strong desire to use again as they induce euphoria. If you want to be on the safe side I'd go with a benzo.

Okay I like benzos as much as the next guy but this is the worst advice you could give the guy. You're telling him to get wasted on benzos and on top of that buzzing on opiates and THEN give a speech? If this guy doesn't have a tolerance, then a low low dose of benzos may be okay. But he doesn't need to get wasted and be in public.

And a beta blocker would be his best bet. There's a reason propanolol is the first line treatment for stage fright. All the politicians take it. And the price of beta blockers are comparable to benzos. Benzos are DIRT cheap.

I don't think 0.5 mg of Klonopin or Xanax would get him at all "wasted".

If you want to avoid benzos and barbiturates and opiods....theres another good beta-blocker that is newer than propanolol called Toprol and Toprol XL believe. Since you're familiar with benzodiazepines I'd choose one with a half-life that works out with the duration of the speech. If you can do a 2mg xanax without falling asleep I doubt ativan will have much effect. I'd recommend klonopin or valium depending on what works best for you. Xanax at 0.25, 0.5, or 1mg could possibly work also if your speech is relatively short and don't have a lot to remember. It's an uncommon benzo, but don't take halcion/triazolam you wont remember anything, lol.

Good luck with the speech!

beta-blockers diminish the effects of epinephrine and norepinephrine which are the "flight or fight" neurotransmitters. performers such as musicians, public speakers, actors, dancers, ect.. especially use beta-blockers for anxiolytic relief; i personally receive great relief from these medications as they bring the jitters, pounding heart, cold/clammy hands, increased respiration, sweating, etc. to a halt.

I'd probably take a benzo + speed mix, but only with the knowledge of how it affects me.

The speed will likely make me more talkative and help with thought flow whereas the benzos will make me more relaxed, open, and feel less judged.

Most likely 3/2 combo of speed and benzos. But it could be "dangerous" depending on dosage and your own experiences. Just what works for me.

^ the main problem with taking an upper and a downer is that one can mask the other, making it easy to take too much and to overdose when one wears off. There is no inherent danger apart from this. Doesn't mean I think it is a good idea for a speech necessarily though!

Propranolol can work really well and less chance of you forgetting your words because you are benzo'd or talking-far-too-fast because you are stimmed imo..
