So I recently started taking 100mg a night for sleep/anxiety/depression. Being the little fucker that I am, I decided to see if it was possible tp get high off it. At 300mg taken orally, It almost felt like a threshold dose of hydrocodone. Now, I am taking Zoloft (100mg nightly) for anxiety. Should I have any problems with the two interacting at all?

Also, in the name of science and curiosity (and a whole lot of boredom), I decided to snort some. (First time snorting anything, ever.) I snorted around 250mg and definatley felt the effects. Though, thats not saying much. It is still only 5-htp afterall. But would snorting it be dangerous at all? Anyone have experience with snorting 5-htp? I'd really like to keep snorting it as I am trying to relieve some anxiety without street drugs (just started the zoloft as well). snorting 5-htp, I feel, could possibly prevent me from cutting/huffing/doing other risky behaviors. At times I feel like I just cant wait the hour for it to kick in. Thanks guys.

Do NOT take 5-HTP together with Zoloft, you're risking serotonin syndrome.

Personally, I looked at 5-HTP more as a vitamin and supplement than a recreational drug, so can't really comment on getting high from it and snorting etc.

Could I get more of an explanation? I have heard of this but do not fully understand what it is. Or what 5-htp/zoloft do to the body. Thanks for the quick reply man.

dude dont snort or plug 5 htp or zoloft. 5htp is a supplement that you can buy in the vitamin section of the grocery store or you can get it at a health food store. 5htp + vitamin b? (correct me if im wrong) are precursors to serotonin.
"As a neurotransmitter, serotonin helps to relay messages from one area of the brain to another. Because of the widespread distribution of its cells, it is believed to influence a variety of psychological and other body functions. Of the approximately 40 million brain cells, most are influenced either directly or indirectly by serotonin. This includes brain cells related to mood, sexual desire and function, appetite, sleep, memory and learning, temperature regulation, and some social behavior."

5htp is supposed to help to create more serotonin in your brain. like others have said, it is not safe to take zoloft with 5htp because of serotonin syndrom.

When I first took 5-HTP I felt all good and happy. Then it wore off about half way thru the bottle no matter how much I took. When you are unsure about drug interactions, you can try this website: Interaction Checker

I use that site quite a bit given how many different meds I am on. Like I have 3 drugs that raise seratonin levels in your brain and I only try to take 2 of the 3 within a 24 hour period. I want to avoid that SS as much as possible.

you probably felt like threshold dose of hydrocodone because tryptophan and 5-htp are rapidly converted to niacin or serotonin in the body. High doses of niacin act as a tranquilizer and give you that pins and needles feeling that you get when you start coming up on hydrocodone.

I'm pretty sure tryptophan is not converted to niacin in the body. Tryptophan is converted to tryptamine by decarboxylation just as 5-HTP is converted to serotonin.

To the OP, please don not take 5-HTP and Zoloft together, that would be a very bad idea. Zoloft is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor.) That means that Zoloft exerts it's action by inhibiting the reentry of serotonin into the pre-synaptic neuron, thus causing more serotonin to remain in the synaptic cleft for increased binding to the post-synaptic neuron. Long-story short if you take 5-HTP, you will have a lot more serotonin in your body, and Zoloft will make the body unable to deal with all that extra serotonin in a healthy way, leading to serotonin syndrome.

I'm pretty sure bottles of 5-HTP even have a warning label on them not to take it with an SSRI or an MAOI (like harmine and harmaline.) So please, don't take 5-HTP with Zoloft unless you want to find out how much fun serotonin syndrome is.

DO NOT take 5-HTP while taking Zoloft.

5-HTP is converted into serotonin.
Zoloft (Sertraline) is a drug in a class of drugs called SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors)

I doubt you're interested in the science talk so I'll save it and put it this way instead... 5-HTP becomes serotonin. Zoloft keeps the serotonin in the 'ready to go' position. This can cause the receptors to become over stimulated, this is called Serotonin Syndrome.

Serotonin Syndrome can be fatal. Some symptoms are headache, overheating, sweating, seizures, shock, and MANY more. Plain and simple, never take any drug that effects serotonin with an SSRI.

Serotonin Syndrome is not fun, and particularly life threatening.

Symptoms include high blood pressure, high level agitation and anxiety, sweating and rise in body temperature though you will prorbly feel cold, possible nausea, limb shaking that could progress to full seizure, changed heart rate- change to ECG rythem (excuse spelling).

I've had it in the past, called ER and was taken to the nearest general temperature, lucKily it was not too severe, and I had no long term effects and was discharged later that day

actually, it is.

"In any normal diet- animal or vegetarian- protein based tryptophan is the least plentiful of all 22 amino acids. A typical diet provides only 1 to 1.5 grams per day, yet there is much competition in the body for this scarce tryptophan. It is used to make various proteins, and in people with low to moderate intakes of vitamin B3 (niacin/ niacinamide), tryptophan may be used by the liver to make B3 at the expensive ratio of 60mg tryptophan to one mg B3."

I have no idea how you can snort 250mg of 5htp lol.

Snorting 50mg of it is a pretty big ass line because it's really light and fluffy powder and it makes me sneeze like 20 times and clogs up my nose (I decided to snort it two times to instead of just taking it orally to... for no apparent reason other than idiocy)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought 5-HTP supplements were just powdered & encapsulated Griffonia simplicifolia seeds.

That's probably why it made you sneeze 20 times and clogged your nose up. It is plant matter. (see: non-recreational)

Oh, you are most likely correct. Like I said, for no other reason than idiocy. I enjoy insufflating I guess :S
