Im at a very depressing crossroads in my life. About to get laid off though happy about it b/c it will force me to switch things up. I know I have a gift for songwriting, maybe not singing but have squandered it for years. Or at least its what I would prefer to pursue other then drug seeking. No good women loss of sex drive have my brain fucked. I dont think I have much more time unless I change.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!!!!!!

Perhaps if you gave more information in your post you could get better responses.

Anyways, on one hand people can tell you to follow your dream or whatever you want to do with song writing. On the other hand, pursuing a music career in this economy seems dangerous at best. It's up to you to decide whether moving into a risky direction with your future is acceptable because you'll be happier doing what you truly enjoy. For every one person that actually turns a profit making music there must be so many who it never works out for.

I don't really have a way to spin this post in a positive direction. For a lot of people these days, developing a career doing something they really enjoy is becoming a more remote possibility.

That being said, just because your job prospects aren't great doesn't mean your life has to consist of being depressed and doing drugs necessarily. I hope you can get a job of any kind soon after you're laid off though. Because it's when you end up in long term unemployment that being depressed and doing drugs starts to seem more and more like a necessity.

You really want to avoid being that guy who holds onto the dream of making it in the music business, etc. And while pursuing this dream falls deeper and deeper into drugs and mental illness trying to live some broken creative lifestyle where all your problems are justified in order to write better songs or whatever but you never make any money doing it. There are a lot of people living this kind of existence out there and it can be sad to witness.

Never plan on making it Im just talking about getting the self confidence to goout and play open mike nights. I am have real jobs to support my self. Thanks for your response

The first step is being clean. Drugs offer false confidence which isn't bad except that when you don't have the drugs you don't have the confidence so when your addicted you end up not being able to do anything unless you got your fix. So get clean then your confidence will return. Start using when your life is more stable if you (MUST USE) if you can stay clean please do.

Well considering this is a harm reduction sight, I would totally encourage you to try to embrace the theory. Maybe a meeting would be too much at first. There are some great books out there then can start you on the right path. The meetings are a great experience as well, because you are surrounded by people who are not telling you what you do is wrong, they are trying to get you to love yourself enough that you don't feel like you are shitting away anything, because that is the mindset that leads you to do more, rather then less. Having a positive self esteem and seeing that you can turn it around with alot of hard work can do wonders.

People who have addictions are real people and need to have the support of others in your situation, so you can begin to feel like you are okay and there is nothing wrong with you. Gaining back the control and the choice to do what you want with out feeling guilty and harming your soul too much, can open many doors for you. Maybe you won't be that famous musician, maybe you will, but maybe you can write beautiful music who will affect the few at a greater level then the masses. Having a career that is fulfilling and rewarding does not always mean that you will be filthy rich, but you can still have music in your life. Remember it is not how famous or rich you are, it is making a living with your talent and using it for good. The world is wide open to you, please do not forget that and please know if you do not love yourself, how can anyone else? I strongly suggest harm reduction meetings, as I know so many people who benefit from it more then sober living. You will meet a good crew and feel safe, this site is great, but there is nothing better then sitting in a room with people and having that face to face realness. Good luck to you...make sure your music touches some souls

What an inspiring and great post. My only dream before I leave this planet is to write one song that will be remembered through time. After that I good peace out. I know I have some talent with my obssessions with melody chord changes and lyrics.
