I recently came across an article discussing the link between cannabis and Schizophrenia and it has really gotten me worried. I have no family history of schiz in my family but I have suffered from severe anxiety and depression in the past. I've been reading about early signs of schiz, and I think I may be showing many signs of it. I was a heavy user when I was fifteen and sixteen, and I now smoke about three times a week. I was wondering if these studies are exaggerated or have a lack of research, as many marijuana studies do. Any help would be appreciated.

Despite rife cannabis use amongst the general population, epidemiologists have failed to see a rise in the prevalence of schizophrenia amongst the population. The bottom line is that they have never established a causal link between schizophrenia and the use cannabis, and for arguments sake if one were to play devils advocate and assume that there is in fact such a causal link, iirc, only tiny percentage of smokers would actually go on to develop the illness (I can't remember the exact percentage but it's low). So to be frank, there are many other risks in life that you should be worrying about, such as the risk of getting caught or family or employers giving you a hard time.

You say you have no family history of schizophrenia so there's another reason to suggest you are worrying over nothing. You're more likely to get the illness from alcohol but I don't hear many people talking about that.

all i can see is it makes an actual schizophrenic 100 times worse in behaviour.

Source: My mum smoked loads of weed even though shes a paranoid schizophrenic

total YMMV. But cannabis causing schizophrenia? No, I don't think that is the correct wording. Triggers, yes, causes, I doubt.

You should see a psychologist or doctor about your concerns. You're not a doctor, and neither are we!

Yes you put that well, Triggers underlying mental illness perhaps but not causes.
Makes me wonder whether i should smoke it or not,
But at the same time ive been told it skips a generation in the family so im really not sure.

IMHO I don't think it can cause longterm mental illness, unlike major psychedelics. If anything it could help some symptoms or take a new view on living with it. BUT everyone is different and so is the weed so its almost like a gamble.

The theory is the schizophrenics are drawn towards using it to ameliorate their symptoms or for some other unknown reason. It's all conjecture though. Regardless, it's not the one puff and you'll go crazy type of scare tactics DARE and partnership for a drug free america would have you believe.

This is actually a copypasta that has been floating around numerous forums now for a little while o.O'. People suggest it's trolling but I really don't see why a troll would take this route.

IF you're not a troll and you just happen to be visiting numerous drug forums posting this same thread, I'll copy and paste what I wrote you at Grasscity in case anybody else finds this thread when finding themselves in a position like yours:

Anxiety and depression are the most common mental problems in the world and both are raising like crazy. EVERYBODY experiences them at some time or another, and sometimes people have problems with it. But just because they're potential warning of schizophrenia shouldn't make you think you have it.. They're just too common to take seriously in that sense, you know?

Until you start hearing things, being delusional, seeing things, and shit like that... You really don't need to worry about it. But if you convince yourself that you're coming down with it you're going to imagine more symptoms, so try to take your mind off it

how would it skip a generation, whoever told u that doesnt know what they are talking about. that sounds like bs for sure.

ha just had to comment on the bolded part, if u had schizophrenia u would not care what ur bosses or friends think, u would be alot more concerned about urself, that nothing other people think would really matter. hell i doubt u would even have a boss or be employed if u were full blown schizo.

My personal belief on the matter, which I'm sure a lot of you will agree with, is that Cannabis and other drugs simply do not cause schizophrenia. However, given that scientists firmly believe now that schizophrenia and similar disorders are caused by irregularities in dopamine neurotransmission, I think it's safe to suggest that any drug which has any affect on dopamine (So, pretty much any recreational drug) could act as a trigger for someone predisposed to the condition who would likely develop it on their own later in life had they never experimented with drugs.

Uh, I meant the risk of your friends, family or employer finding out you smoke cannabis, not that you have schizophrenia.

ok but really if you have a family history of schizophrenia I would be careful with set and setting of when you use marijuana to avoid any development of a mental illness from marijuana catalyzing something, but I had a friend who had a history of mental illness who used marijuana to medicate himself. it worked out good for him but money was a problem. better than lithium from what it seems like from a perspective outside his mind.

i just like to smoke it, then play with my mixer and blast some old trance classics,
but yeah i guess the brain could associate certain settings as certain things, etc

You know, when you talk to someone with the disease (like my mum for example) its like talking to someone on drugs, they have very strange views.
