Not if she knows what she's doing. And Valium isn't a "harder" benzo. It just has a longer half life than Xanax. Which means it takes longer to get out of your system and which means it more predictable when tapering. With Xanax, and because of its relatively short half life, it's a constant up and down when tapering i.e. one day withdrawal symptoms may set in but then the next day not and so on and so forth. There's no set of rules and 101 things that come into play in this when it comes to benzodiazepines that have a relatively short half life.
Good luck though is all I can say. If there's one thing I've learned in the last 15 years: there's people around here that know a FUCK load more than most medical professionals (and ESPECIALLY Pharmacists i.e. only thing they're good at is reading the fucking label and noting the scheduling status) when it comes to benzodiazepines.
Here's a table indicating the various benzodiazepine equivalences. 10mg Valium is equivalent to 0.5mg of Xanax. But note the difference in the half lives.
And in just what you've read here (hopefully): I'll bet that you now know more than she does!
What I'd like to know is why we're even having this conversation i.e. you'd jumped from 1mg for a week and then to nothing for 17 days! The battle was already fought and won by that time!
