The comparison is always drawn up again because alcohol is so normalized, and the same people who espouse a vehement fear of the dangers of cannabis also generally fear nothing about alcohol. I for one have almost died from alcohol poisoning yet I've never had any bad side-effects from cannabis aside from being too tired or anti-social. It's socially acceptable to see a person on the ground with a bucket in their hands half-way to a lethal overdose at parties but if someone pulls out a blunt half the people get all uppity. Maybe it's just because for me in the past year I've seen the true damage alcohol can induce, both in myself and others, but I will never fear or turn down cannabis the way that I would a shot of vodka. I'd even go so far as saying it's safer to drive on cannabis than it is to drive when you're tired and on a one hour commute to work; if anything, cannabis users drive slower. When I was a delivery driver I would get stoned on the job, and I was significantly safer - if I had coffee instead before work, I'd be passing in no pass zones, shouting at other drivers, going 20 over the limit in residential zones, just in general ignoring my safety and the safety of others.I love that each time someone tries to bring up potential harm from smoking weed, alcohol is instantly brought up. We all know that it's harmful, we know it's generally more harmful than weed. No one in here is denying that. But people constantly deny any harmfulness of weed, regardless what evidence you throw at them.
There is always a bigger fish and there is always a more harmful drug we shouldn't compare up in this scenario. Just because it isn't as bad as something else doesn't mean it's harmless.
The shrine surrounding weed as a remedy to all problems is ridiculous.
Each and every time this conversation is had :
Hurr durr alcohol ex machina.
The point is, the comparisons are always drawn because society thinks it's okay for you to poison yourself, but not get just a bit impaired by some cannabis.
