what causes the sizzle?

Has anyone considered this weed maybe have been used in extraction? Wouldnt the leftover butane possibly cause the sparking?

Sizzling/cracking always indicated 'sprayed' weed round here.
Smoke some in a joint and when you have a decent size nug of ash to flick off rub the ash between your fingertips.. If it is 'oily' then the weed is sprayed - and really bad for you to smoke. Bin.

As a former grower, sometimes if I was using a LOT of nutes and didn't flush the plant sufficiently before harvest I would get buds that acted that way. As long as the bud smells and tastes normal that's what I'd guess happened.

Usually moisture will cause crackling sounds. Even saliva on a blunt will sound.

This. It's any moisture bubbling due to the heat.
I've had it happen with crack, but not weed.
