Anybody else stoked for the Coen Bros. remake of the undeniable classic True Grit?

This looks promising!

[...]

"True Grit" will be a remake of 1969 Western movie of the same title that helped John Wayne earning his Oscar. However, the new film will not be a straight remake of the original film. Thus, instead of focusing on Wayne's character Rooster Cogburn, the upcoming drama will center on Mattie.

Jeff Bridges is attached to star as one of the marshals, while Matt Damon has been rumored to join him in the hunt. Josh Brolin, additionally, is reported to take the role of the killer. Beside serving behind the lens, the Coen brothers also write the script alongside Scott Rudin. The adventure movie is going to start its shooting in Spring 2010.

I edited a bit because this article is dated. For one, they've cast Mattie now: newcomer Haliee Steinfeld.

I'm pretty thrilled about the casting... other than the assertion in this article that the film will focus more on Mattie than Cogburn. I wonder where they got this idea. Have the people who wrote the article even seen the original? I remember Mattie being very close to, if not the, focus of the original. Regardless, I'm sure it'll be great.

It comes out on Christmas Day.

cant fucking wait...I love the coen bros. everything they do is gold.

Remaking a John Wayne film is a recipe for fail. Good luck brothers Coen.

Looks good, hope the film delivers. I'm a little excited tbh.

How many John Wayne movies even been remade, let alone failed? You say that like it's a category that should be equated with, say, Japanese horror remake failures. I think Coen brothers movies are almost always a safe bet. Even when they're not financially successful, they're almost always critically successful.

okay. watched this today and it was great imo. jeff bridges was awesome. the cinematography was awesome. the tone was spot-on.

5 stars

That's great to hear....I love Jeff Bridges! I'm still waiting for it to start playing in my town....

I saw it several days ago. I loved it. I also loved the original. It's definitely a straight-forward Western so if you don't enjoy that genre you might not like this. The girl did a much better job in this than the original. And, I agree, Bridges did an amazing job.

I saw it and it was good but I could not help comparing Jeff Bridges to John Wayne which made it a bit of a letdown but not a failure. For me, the girl saved this film by far and she should, at the very least, get some major acting noms for it.

My previous comment is not so much about old westerns vs new ones but about an American acting icon's film being remade. Its a huge difference.

i've never seen the original and dont intend to; genre pictures arent really my thing. however, this was one of the best movies i've seen in a long time. i love the timing of dialogue in coen brothers' movies- always sharp and smart assy. Hailee Steinfeld most def stole the show. when josh brolin is in a wester and totally nails his role and *still* fades into the background you know there are some strong performances. top fuckin drawer

i really liked it. i thought the dialogue was spot on and the acting was great. and i liked watching my husband get all squeamish toward the end of the movie.

I finally got to see it tonight (by driving an hour from my small town) and it was amazing. I haven't seen the original so I was kind of excited to go into it with no expectations. It's definitely one of the best movies made recently. I loved Jeff Bridges (of course) and Matt Damon, and especially enjoyed Hailee Steinfeld who played Mattie. Made me laugh, made me cry, entertained me from beginning to end.

IMO... This would be much better if you didn't see and love the 1st one. True Grit was probably John Wayne's best acting performance other than the Shootist. It's good the 1st was long ago so many of the younger viewers didn't see it. For us older dudes, Jeff Bridges was in a tough situation which is to bad because he's a terrific actor. I liked him a lot better in "Wild Bill". Coen bros definitely sold a bunch of tickets. Anyway, I'm happy this was a success at the BO because it could bring back more westerns to the theaters.

4/5. I understand it was a remake and a good one, but I would have wanted more action.
