The Travel Thread - Second Destination

I'll take that as a no then. I must be missing / forgetting something. :D

I was constantly looking at flights from BKK to Japan as I would love to go there but there was nothing reasonably priced. Another time. :)

Who's been?

fuck Tel Aviv! :p

aye, Kate's keen on moscow or st petersburg too. i'm a bit 'meh' about Russia but i know it would be completely different being on holiday there than working on some fucking gulag in siberia.

this wouldn't need to be just a weekend, it could be for a couple of weeks. i'd quite like to fly to moscow, get the train to st petersburg, and fly home from there, but i'm not sure if the air miles works quite like that. plus there's the carry on with visas for visiting Russia... bah, i dunno.

me not being in a job and not knowing what the fuck's going on with life is complicating things right now, i can't plan a thing at the moment. :!

edit: Kate's been to Tokyo, spade. she may have mentioned that about a million times. ;)

^^ No you were just a total bellend last time you asked, twisted my words and berated me for things I didn't actually say.

Japan is a country i still havnt been to but woud very much like to, same with china. next holiday im gona take is gona be to south america tho never been and really want to.

the current favourite is Rome, neither of us have been there.

Lisbon is lovely (and cheap). Off there meself soon.

EDIT - beaches are great too in Portugal

Life isn't long enough for me to bother with/try to understand Japanese culture.

Don't remember it but that sounds like me. :D

Sorry. ;)

Life isn't long enough for me to bother with/try to understand Japanese culture.

The fascination for me is just how weird and quirky the culture is. It looks thoroughly confusing and that's why I want to go. :D

I'm torn between a jungle lodge in the South Cardamon Mountains reserve or Kep on the south coast for Saturday morning, need to buy boots if I go there. Plus it's expensive and I'm getting mixed messages from the women I'm supposed to be going with.

It's a National Holiday on Monday for International Women's Day, long weekend:)

I drove through Kep and it looked nice but I think it's fairly small. Jungle lodge sounds a bit more exciting.

Personally I'd go to Sihanoukville, sun it up on the beach with a 25 cent beer, enjoy the nightlife, hit the casino, enjoy a beach rave etc. <3 Sihanoukville.

Good on yer Spade, long flights = benzos ftw. They should give them out for free at the airport. Jetlag wouldn't exist.

Dude, what do you think the NHS is for? :)

My doctor was so nice. I thought I'd have to scam her: "can you recommend me a good OTC sleeping aid, for when I fly back home? Melatonin?". Her: "Melatonin's shit, have some valium". Only gave me 5mg per leg, though. And a lecture about how I didn't have to get worried about getting addicted to that dosage ;)

Felix/Kate: Prague's not bad. I agree with SHM that Lisbon is great - it's possibly my favourite city in Europe so far. You can't really go wrong with Rome, though.

I've just been back to NZ to renew me visa, managed to spend a month travelling around, saw some places I'd never been before (my g/f's brother has a holiday place near Lake Tekapo, it is amazingly beautiful up there). Went to Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson, Tauranga and Wellington as well (which means fuck all to most of you, unfortunately...)

Personally I'd go to Moscow.

That was my first reaction :D let's go to Russia then lets get on a train and go to a, b and c. Then I looked into the visas etc and the costs etc just kept rising. Considering we have a year of multiple-home expenditures to look forward to, it's not the best time to be blowing out on travel. So it's on the back burner :(

Aye Japan's not cheap :| but I'm glad I did it and with my youngest too, who is so into all things Japanese, it was an amazing trip and the time we spent there together are some of my happiest memories and moments with him - just us together in a very strange and bizarre land! <3

SHM - I'm liking your suggestion of Lisbon, but there's a notion for Barcelona in my head as I'm a right Gaudi fan and with Felix's love of photography, I think we'd enjoy that :)

Of course I'm itching like a bitch at all this talk of Qatar and the middle east =D It's right up my street and I'd have no hesitation at risking a year (my pension and I can get a sabbatical from work) on this kind of experience...

Life n' travel is sweet %)

Most people can't get benzos on the NHS. You got lucky. :p

I'm away to take some now and pretend that tonight didn't happen. I hate my 'mates' and everything they stand for, long live Thailand. <3

Lol, just got offered a Job and have to go chat with the Head Teacher tomorrow @9:30am, so no Jungle for me this weekend(taxi is at 6am). Might make it to Kep in the evening though.

Good luck on the job mate. Did you feel that course you did in Cambodia was worth while, I'm looking into doing a TEFL course or something here but might be better to do it on the ground in Asia somewhere.

Aye, it was so easy I figured anyone must be able to do it.%)

Guess it helps that I've spent the last year telling the doc 'the depression's getting better but I still feel kinda anxious', and that I look like a nice middle-class professional type, approaching middle age, not a filthy druggie like you, Spadey ;)

I don't need docs, SE Asian pharmacies ftw! $1 for 10 x 10mg diaz. :)

There's a few alright places on those lists. What about heading across to Tunisia?

Not 100% where I'm going to next. If things go to plan (nothing has) then looks like we're flying to KL around Sept or Oct and then going somewhere from there. Could be Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia or China? Got about 5 weeks to play with.

You been to any of them before?

Laos is wicked, 5 weeks there would be good. I have only seen a limited amount of the country (Viettiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang) but I loved it. People are incredibly friendly, food is fantastic, lots of scenery, nature and cool activities. Vang Vieng alone has 'tubing' which is the best thing I've ever done plus you can go swim in the blue lagoon, explore caves, kayaking, biking etc. Luang Prabang is a cool place with a very cosmopolitan and European vibe, lots of nice cafes, coffee shops and bakeries as well as an incredibe night market. The temple up on the hill offers great views of the city. Nearbye there's waterfalls, elepheant trekking and so on.

Vietnam is OK. Halong Bay in the north is nice, Hanoi is a horrible hectic hell hole but the Army Museum is cool and Hoi Chi Minhs masoleum is there, Hue has the DMZ tunnels and not much else - pretty boring, Hoi An has some incredible street food and is kind of pretty plus good place to get a suit / clothes made but not exciting, Nha Trang is a cool beach town which is a nice place to spend some time relaxing -spent the festive period here and had a great time drinking passionfruit beer all day by the pool at the Louisiana Brew House where they make their own beer then there is Saigon which is so incredibly busy and chaotic that it should be avoided at all costs, the only bonus is that nearbye is the Cu Chi tunnels and Mekong Delta.
