The Greatest Movie Star of our Time

Cate Blanchett is box office gold. She doesn't hog the tabloid front pages like other previously mentioned actors, but I can't remember a role she has acted in the past 10 yrs that hasn't been critically acclaimed. If a film was announce tomorrow with her staring I would be instantly interested.

I can't remember Nicole Kidman's last hit.

Hilary Swank generally has first dibs on major female roles under 40 at the moment, Meryl Streep for the over 50 roles. Pitt, Cruise and Clooney are first choice for most males roles with Depp considered for more quirky films. Sean Penn is the king of the low budget sleepers.

Nicole Kidman was one of several hot starring ladies in "NINE" last year.

Plus, she got a major Acadamy Award film coming out soon called "Rabbit Hole" and my first cousing is one of the leads.....it's his first big break.......his name is Miles Teller........he's also gonna be in Footloose 2 and the new film from the director of The Hangover.(shameless namedrop..i'm really happy for him)

cate is the best actor currently working, and is far too good for this thread.

^definitely. this thread is about MOVIE STARS: people with charisma not talent, typecasts not versatility.

and I prefer Naomi Watts over cate as the most talented these days ..personally

im gonna say brad pitt.

Would you consider tom hanks a "movie star"?

you're frickin insane
and a danger to society

edit: meant for AA

perhaps some people didn't read the op:
I'm not speaking of serious "film" actors. I'm talking about "MOVIE STARS".....
if we're discussing box office and star power, i think the list has to include:

- harrison ford
- tom hanks
- will smith
- tom cruise
- julia roberts

if you're talking purely box office receipts, how about daniel radcliffe?

alasdair

All those actors you mention are definitely relevant, quality choices.

Not purely box office....but if someone wanted to pick Daniel Radcliffe, thereby asserting their ignorance, that would be fine with me.

yes, this is a matter of opinion.
(to be clear: i'm not talking at you here alasdair, just expounding on some good questions you raised)
but any rational, thoughtful person should be able to discern that Daniel Radcliffe isn't a "top" movie star like harrison ford, will smith, tom cruise, nicholas cage, jack nicholson, and the like

i will admit that there is probably some bias in this case because i just find her so intriguing...but she is a very talented actress regardless

otherwise, i would say Meryl Streep is undoubtedly the single greatest actress, if not ACTOR, ever

point taken.

to your point, that absolutely depends on one's definition of the terms. it's perfectly reasonable to interpret "greatest movie star" as biggest box office draw in which case one can make a case (even if it's a tenuous one to you) for daniel radcliffe.

alasdair

good point.

I'm trying to define the terms as personality traits(movie stars) rather than technical skills, (great actors) with the monetary concerns only secondary because in order to be a movie star one must possess the correct personality qualities and the money is an automatic permutation of the action of them acting in movies.

You would have to include Paris Hilton. Even terrible B-grade movies are thrust into mainstream limelight simple due to her notoriety.

says the guy who says Tom Cruise is the greatest movie star of our time.

i'll go with alisdair on this one, and if we're really just talkingabout no talent but still making shit tons of dough, it's totally Daniel Radcliff. If it's a modest amount of talent and still shit tons of dough, it's Brad Pitt. If we're talking about no talent and used to make shit tons of dough but can't hold a movie, its obviously Tom Cruise.

the two toms. hanks and cruise. they should totally do a buddy cop comedy where they have to like dress as nun as they escort a black guy through a supermarket full of zombies or someshit.

^that makes sense to me. those are reasonable choices and opinions.....even if you only thought Hanks that would be a valid choice
