The Cannabis Discussion Thread Version 2

Yeah interesting info mate, I guess if you can get away with the 6+ footers it's much better for the yield than the dwarfs. I agree it's really fun growing them, I love the smell of the different buds, so nice.

I've eaten cookies a heap of times over the years, had some mad strong ones in byron before, been so stoned I could hardly walk or talk for a while. I dont use cannabis much either these days, I used to grow some a for a few years indoor and out, not too fussed about the whole thing now days tho, I abused the hell out of weed for like a decade and wasted so much money and was a bit lazy and stuff, so i'm glad i've stopped, mostly because I haven't got all those old contacts that I used to score off close by anymore. When I do get some weed, maybe a few times a year I try and use my vap a bit, but I usually end up hitting the bong as well.

I couldn't move after a cookie in Byron. One hour I was fine, I stood up and I literally couldn't lift my legs or stop laughing. Oh those fun fun days 10 years ago. Stoned by the sea from a Byron hash cookie with an absolutely stunning girl named nikita from the local caravan park... Memories are an awesome thing. She was so beautiful, that was my fav summer in my entire life. summertime love at its most perfecto.

I can't stop eating... I think I'm overly stoned! Damn thing... The only bad side effect is blazin some south Australian dank is weight gain! Lol

Here's s pic of one of a few babies i have on the go at the moment. Be needing to put into the ground soon. I'm planning on in the ground before October gives a solid 4 month veg before flower and there at a decent size already. Started giving them thrive the other day, it's making such an improvement it's all I use apart from dynamic lifter in organic soil. How are other people's going?

I got a buddy who is looking to grow a few plants or so in his backyard, say 3 or 4 at the most, non feminized so 2-3 actually finishing, if that. He is a little bit paranoid about nosy neighbors, and is considering investing in a greenhouse to obstruct their view a little bit. I am not sure whether this is a good idea in a climate such as Australia, mainly due to the likelihood of it getting rather hot inside the greenhouse throughout summer.

Was hoping that others could share their experiences growing in a greenhouse in Australia, preferably Melbourne but I will take what advice I can get. Just essentially want to know how they went, how they compared to plants you have grown outdoors without a greenhouse, the main differences/considerations when growing in a greenhouse as opposed to uncovered etc.

Also, would there be a difference between getting a glass one and one of those cheaper plastic sort of greenhouses other than sturdiness? My mate doesn't work and I doubt he is going to be forking out several hundred dollars for a larger glass one, plus the plastic probably does a better job of obstructing peoples view, although for this reason I also thought it could have a negative effect on yield and/or potency due to reduced light intensity.

Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

cant say i know much of anything about growing in a greenhouse but think the old man has a bit of knowledge with it. id ask him now but he snuck straight into bed after desert just now. so ill quiz him tomorrow n relay the info youre after, assuming he knows.

my concern would be the amount of direct sunlight the area gets throughout the day. is it obscured much at all, shaded for periods of lengthy time? if thats the case i would consider leaving the top off. leaving the perimetre of the shade

cloth to act as a privacy screen, leaving the max amount of sunlight to get at them precious babies.

how big of a greenhouse is he looking it to be?

His fence is about 2 metres high so I would guess 1.8-2 metres in height, the other dimensions I could only speculate, but since they are looking to do a handful of plants or less and only 50-70% of those are likely to be females, combine this with the fact they have a rather limited budget and I wouldn't imagine that it would be too large, but I don't really know what variety of sizes they come in either.

The area doesn't get a crazy amount of direct sunlight, infact, I would not be surprised at all if the plants were to flower a bit early because of this. I guess maybe 6 or 7 hours of direct sunlight a day at the most, the area is right against the fence pretty much so it is certainly shaded for a part of the day, the neighbor on the other side of that particular fence has some really high trees too which block a bit of sunlight.

ah damn, theyre really not in the right place, hey? which is unfortunate.

theyll have to experiment with what they set up to find the best of it all. maybe getting a few extra seedlings to replace plants that reall dont hit it off right. maybe.

you can get 2 grows in a season usually so id treat the initial operation as an experiment and fine tune things best as possible for round 2.

I have read before that amount of direct sunlight per day was alright for growing plants, obviously not ideal, but I would of thought the plant would still be receiving some lumens for most of the rest of daylight hours, even if it isn't directly in the light? Might not be the largest plants anybody ever grew, but I figure they shouldn't flower ridiculously early, although I am not sure.

My friend has access to two kinds, one is more indica than the other, I know that they would prefer the indica but am I correct in thinking that the one with a touch of sativa in it is a tad less likely to flower early than the indica dominant one? I seem to recall reading that indicas were more prone to early flowering than sativas.

I don't know that many people are getting two grows per season down here, I could be wrong, but bear in mind I am south of Melbourne and the sun doesn't shine as long here as it does other parts of this great nation. It is already a little late start being mid October and them not having much going at this point, other than a couple plants in very early stages that may have to be rethought if the sativa containing strain is the better option.

Ultimately, I am sure that they are going to have a crack regardless and worst case it will be a learning experience. Still, I am very keen to hear peoples experiences growing in greenhouses in Australia, what drawbacks and advantages they offer, etc.

You should be right as far as flowering goes usually they respond to amount of night time hours ie almost complete darkness. If they make it through the next month or so with out flowering then you will get a full season out of them. Indicas planted now or later should go great guns. Planting indicas too early will lead to them flowering in spring, sativa can go from the end of winter all the way through to the start of the next one.

Can anyone recommend a good potting soil for cannabis? I went to Bunnings today and practically every single one seems to have a wetting agent and/or water crystals added, as I understand it cannabis likes good drainage and so these wouldn't really be ideal? Or do pots dry out pretty quick in the Aussie summer and the slightly better water retention is actually a good thing?

The one I saw that claimed to have good drainage was a Yates brand tomato soil with dynamic lifter added, I would of jumped on it except I managed to burn some of my seedlings a while back by putting them in a soil with dynamic lifter. Would it be okay to transplant established plants into this mix?

All my plants are just in osmocote seedling starter mix, I have plants anywhere between the ages of 2 and 6 weeks, I have a couple of ones in styro cups that are about 3 weeks old and due to repotted so preferably I would want a soil that plants this young could be repotted into without any issues. The first couple I repotted I just had to fill the larger pots with seedling starter mix and I feel this is probably not ideal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

I usually just get a 'premium' potting mix, not the 'standard' ones, I think that's how they label them anyway.

Hey d_m, a friend of mine had major trouble when he 'added' a wetting agent to his soil. The ants went crazy on it.

He used it because he was planting in sandy soil (not by choice), and he wasn't going to have much of a chance to water them (gorilla scenario).

Like PD mentioned, in the past I just go for a premium well regarded brand, with no additives. The plants take most the nutrients out of the potting mix fairly quickly anyway, hence adding fertiliser yourself.

There would be situations where adding a wetting agent would be beneficial, just suppose it depends on soil condition, and where you grow them.

These are just a backyard type deal, I am hoping to have them in 50L pots before they start flowering but I might not end up going that large, don't think I have the space to go any larger. I have some guerrilla shit going but I know what I am doing in regards to my soil for all that.

I can see where perhaps a pot would dry out relatively quickly whether it had a wetting agent or not, just because things probably get hotter in there than they do at ground level. I am thinking that worst case scenario if I had to pick up one of these potting mixes I could mix in about 20-25% sand to improve drainage and that would sort any issues, but I would prefer to be able to grab a potting mix that is ideal for cannabis without me having to fuck around with it at all.

I guess I might as well ask what the advantages/disadvantages are of different pot materials. I have noticed you can get ceramic, plastic, clay and some other types. At this stage I was just going to go with plastic, it seems like a lot of ceramics don't even have drainage holes. But was curious what other people use and why.

I've allways been told to use plastic. I think the theory behind this, is, the ceramic pots heat up and hold heat for a longer time.

Again, it's dependent on your setup, you might want a bit more heat, but then the soil will dry out a lot quicker, or in a shorter amount of days. Therefor needing to water more.

Plastics are cheaper too.

Canna Terra could be an option for potting mix? If you are feeling rich that is. I'm not sure how much better it is than some premium organic mixes though to justify the price. Its meant to be designed specifically for cannabis and is widely available at hydro stores. I use one thats made up at a local organic gardening supplier as a vegetable mix. It has course sand, bark and animal manure pretty sure there would be similar small suppliers in most cities.

D_M they could supplement the light if in a greenhouse situation with a single hydro fluro light say 200 watt (blue for growing and the other spectrum for flowering... does not matter that much as the hours of light are what counts). Those bulbs are cheap vs normal hydro lighting. Provided it's weather proof or the light at least covered by a weather proof shield. These things use very little power per day vs a standard 60-100 watt light bulb. Just set a timer for the extra hours plants are shaded. The shade will not matter that much, the ambient light levels will be enough but they won't grow as big or as fat buds.

Moar bud porn, just because.
