Adelaide Women's Prison staff foils drugs drop

September 27, 2009 01:30pm

STAFF at Adelaide Women's Prison have foiled an attempted delivery of cannabis, syringes, amphetamines, cocaine and other items into the jail.
Motion sensors detected a prisoner climbing an inner perimeter fence then throwing a package into the prison grounds, the state government said in a statement on Sunday.

The incident occurred just before 7am (CST) on Thursday last week, activating a perimeter alarm.

CCTV camera footage identified a suspect who has been moved to a high-security unit pending an investigation and possible charges.

The items found included 21 grams of cannabis wrapped in plastic, 21 syringes, 22 tablets - some believed to be amphetamine-based - small bags of cocaine and amphetamine powder, a small quantity of hashish, and a container of charcoal tablets.

The incident follows other significant drug finds in correction centres this year, including a person lobbing four tennis balls filled with cannabis and heroin into Mobilong Prison.

"Whether it's tennis balls over the fence at Mobilong, visitors trying to hide items at Yatala or drugs lobbed over the fence at the women's prison - we will find the drugs regardless," Correctional Services Minister Tom Koutsantonis said in the statement.

Brothers bailed after court appearance

Nikki Joyce and Alan Lander | 25th September 2009

ALLEGED drug dealers charged after joint police raids on Thursday have been bailed after appearing in a Sunshine Coast court.

The four were charged after raids that took place in Beerwah and Woombye as well as at properties in Brisbane and Townsville.

Woombye-based brothers Reece Leonard Walker, 19, and Todd David Walker, 20, were given bail at Maroochydore Magistrates Court, to re-appear on November 18.

The brothers have been charged with alleged possession of drug utensils and trafficking.

Also in court were 41-year-old Sharon Tuddenham and her 25-year-old boyfriend Christopher Adam Johnson, who live in Beerwah.

Johnson has been charged with alleged possession and trafficking, while Tuddenham is charged with alleged possession of drug utensils, possession, property offences and trafficking.

Police from the state’s drug squad swooped on the Beerwah home and a Woombye property on Thursday.

Officers seized various property including expensive motorbikes, a motor vehicle and thousands of dollars worth of cash.

The Daily understands the raids were part of an extensive ongoing operation called Operation Hotel Sonar that involves police from New South Wales and the Northern Territory.

Property seized from the Beerwah address included a single cab Holden Rodeo utility, a late model Yamaha R1 road bike and a late model KTM 450F dirt bike.

A five-figured amount of cash was also seized, placed in plastic bags and confiscated.

It is understood the raids relate to the seizure of 5000 ecstasy pills worth about $175,000 outside the Sunshine Coast region earlier this year.

Half a kilogram of speed was also confiscated in the same raid.

Op Smuggler - western Victoria

Friday, 25 September 2009 18:46

Police saturated the streets of Werribee today as part of a large scale crackdown on motorists transporting illicit drugs and property.

Members from across western Victoria, including Werribee, Altona, Geelong and Ballarat as well as the Dog Squad took part in Operation Smuggler.

Police patrolled the streets in and around Werribee, searching vehicles for stolen property and drugs.

A total of 371 vehicles and 189 occupants were checked as part of the operation.

The results of the operation include:

• 46 penalty notices issued
• 4 traffic offences detected requiring evidence briefs to be prepared
• 4 incidents which include one person who is expected to be charged with possess amphetamine, traffick drug of dependence, possess drug of dependence, possess ecstasy and possess proceeds of crime.

Region 2 Crime Management Superintendent Daryl Clifton said the operation sent a stern warning to those thinking of transporting contraband in the area.

"Police are more serious than ever about combating drug and crime offences and we are warning those that such illegal behaviour would not be tolerated," he said.

"This operation will be the first of a series that will take place across western Victoria in the near future."

Today's operation was based on a pilot program, Operation CATCH, which is currently being run out of Melbourne's east.

Operation CATCH (crime and traffic connecting highways), a concept inspired by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's Operation Pipeline, allows trained operational members to identify suspicious vehicles and drivers.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police's program has been responsible for the seizure of about $4 billion worth of contraband over the last 15 years.

An Operation Smuggler conducted in Ballarat last month resulted in police arresting seven people for a number of offences, including traffic drug of dependence, possess/use drug of dependence (amphetamine, ecstasy and cannabis) and recklessly cause injury/assault related offences.

Dope was for 'toothpaste' court told

EMILY WATKINS

September 26th, 2009

A MAN told a judge he brought cannabis cuttings and seedlings in the Territory to grow and use for clothing, plastic and toothpaste.

And Justice John Mansfield accepted the contention.

Dan Joch McLeod, 44, pleaded guilty to bringing 202 seedlings and 142 cannabis cuttings in soil into the Territory.

Justice Mansfield said the circumstances of the offence were "peculiar".

He said McLeod planned to see how well the cannabis would grow at a property northeast of Tennant Creek.

"You had a view to exploring the use of them if they were successfully growing, for producing or considering the production of products from them, such as plastics, clothing, toothpaste and other items," he said.

"I accept that ultimately your intention was ... that this cannabis unlawfully supplied by bringing it into the Northern Territory would not have hit the commercial users' market in the way that most cannabis brought into the Northern Territory does."

McLeod brought the cannabis into the Territory in a car towing a "rather dilapidated caravan" with the cannabis inside it on February 23.

He was driving from Camooweal in Queensland and as he left he was picked up for possessing the drugs, and fined $450 in Camaweal Magistrates Court.

He was stopped by NT police after he crossed the border on the Barkly Highway, where they found the cannabis.

Justice Mansfield said that given the "very peculiar circumstances" of the offence, he would suspend an 18 months' sentence on time already served. McLeod spent 10 weeks in prison on remand for the charges.

Teens suspended in drug scandal at Whitefriars College

Mark Dunn | September 26, 2009 12:00AM

SIX students at Whitefriars College have been suspended or lost their position at the exclusive Catholic school for allegedly drug trafficking and smoking marijuana.

The teen students were identified last week, as the school term concluded, accused of being involved in a cannabis sharing and trafficking arrangement.

All cases have been referred to police and Whitefriars management are investigating whether the drug activities had spread among the wider school population.

"It came to our attention in the last week of term that there were a number of students who were sharing small amounts of marijuana among themselves," principal Father Paul Cahill said.

"They were sharing them but not smoking them at school . . . there was a small financial exchange with a couple of them, basically to recoup costs plus a small profit . . . that's why the police have been informed.

"We have determined there were six students, they have been suspended and have been informed it is an expellable offence."

Father Cahill said the students were invited to come back to school during holidays this week to plead their case but four decided they would instead join another school.

"Some of them have chosen to do that and are being assisted to transfer to other schools to make a fresh start."

He said all the students involved would be counselled and told to "mend their ways" but it was not part of school policy to subject any student to ongoing drug urine or blood tests.

Travelling interstate yesterday and without the age of each student in front of him, Father Cahill conceded that some of the students involved may have been teenagers.

"It is quite young, it is disturbing," he said.

He said the original source of the drugs was outside the school and he believed the students involved, although at fault, were victims themselves.

"Our investigations are still continuing. We do want to make sure anyone who has been involved in any way is counselled appropriately."

Doncaster police Det Sen-Sgt Neil Beeson warned that even small quantities of drugs could attract strong penalties.

"Trafficking is trafficking. There are degrees in anything, but it's an indictable offence and carries stiff penalties," Sen-Sgt Beeson said.

"Kids need to realise what effect it will have on their lives at a later point in time, including travel restrictions and employment."

League legend on more drug charges

September 28th, 2009

A FORMER Darwin Rugby League star was given bail this morning after police allegedly found resources for a drug laboratory in his Ludmilla home.

Former Darwin Rugby League coach Joe Romelo, 51, was charged and arrested on fisheries and drugs matters on Friday.

He appeared in Darwin Magistrates Court this morning to apply for bail.

He is also facing charges for allegedly bringing 16g of crystal methamphetamine into Darwin on a flight from Brisbane in July.

The court heard police found 300ml of pseuodoephedrine (which is found in cold and flu tablets) in the house, and that some of the tablets had been crushed and mixed with methylated spirits.

His lawyer Jodi Truman said the fresh drugs charges would be contested but Romelo would probably plead guilty to the fisheries charges, which include taking 11 undersize barramundi.

Magistrate Daynor Trigg said Romelo was "lucky" to be getting bail again.

Romelo's daughter and son-in-law had to give $2000 in surety to the court for Romelo's release.

He will not be allowed to take any illegal drugs while on bail, and will have to report to police twice a week.

Drug dealer told to pay

HELEN KEMPTON

September 30, 2009 12:25pm

A BURNIE woman who was today convicted of drug trafficking, must repay $28,000 for selling cannabis.

The Burnie Supreme Court heard that Tania Maree Radford would buy an ounce of cannabis each week and divide it into smaller deals. She made about $250 a week from her dealing.

The amount Radford must repay is equivalent to her earnings over a year and does not take the price she paid for the cannabis into account.

The court heard Radford, a single mother with five children, sold drugs to an undercover police officer on three occasions between January and March this year.

Police found drugs packaged ready for sale and about $500 in cash when they swooped.

Radford told the court she was not a drug user but needed money after escaping a violent relationship.

"You gave little thought to the harm drugs cause in the community," Justice Shan Tennant told Radford.

The 37-year-old was sentenced to four months in jail. The sentence was suspended on the condition she is of good behaviour for the next three years.

International drug ring busted in Queenstown

Thursday October 01, 2009

ecstasy_pills_2.jpg

Police raids in Otago and Canterbury have uncovered a sophisticated international drug syndicate.

Queenstown police recruited the help of Australian and Canadian police after the syndicate was exposed during eight raids on Wednesday.

Seven people were arrested for allegedly importing hundreds of thousands of dollars of ecstasy or LSD from Vancouver, Canada.

Detective Sergeant Grahme Bartlett says the "principals" running the syndicate were two New Zealanders living in Queenstown.

"While Queenstown is portrayed as a party town ... we were surprised at the level of drugs being imported," he told The Southland Times.

He says the drugs were being imported from Vancouver via Bali and Sydney.

"The Canadian authorities were quite astounded by the methods being used."

Four people were arrested in Queenstown, one in Oamaru and two in Dunedin.

A British man, who lives in Australia, was also arrested in Queenstown.

The arrested people will appear in Invercargill District Court.
