$2m airport cocaine syndicate busted: police

GEORGINA ROBINSON | September 21, 2009 - 9:35AM

Six men have been arrested over a cocaine importation syndicate allegedly involving workers at Sydney International Airport.

It will be alleged the six men were involved in an operation that imported almost $2 million worth of cocaine over the past 18 months and used airside employees at Sydney International Airport to collect the packages from arriving flights, the Australian Federal Police said in a statement.

Investigators allegedly seized one kilogram of cocaine yesterday, with an estimated street value of $350,000.

The men, aged between 20 and 55, were arrested yesterday by officers from the AFP and Customs and Border Protection Command, who have been investigating the alleged syndicate since 2007.

Investigators raided six homes in Bexley, Glenwood, Matraville, Merrylands, Mascot and Maroubra, seizing an unknown quantity of Australian and foreign currency, the statement said.

A commercial premises in Mascot was also raided.

AFP acting national aviation manager Steve Grant said up to 12 AFP officers worked full-time on the investigation, helping intercept more than 58,000 telephone calls.

"It is believed that this investigation has resulted in the dismantling of an international drug syndicate that relied upon the involvement of airport staff, which is an exceptional result," Commander Grant said.

"The Joint Airport Investigation Team targets serious and organised crime including targeting trusted insiders (employees) who exploit or aim to exploit security vulnerabilities at major airports."

Since the operation began, the team has investigated several related incidents, including the importation of 5.7 kilograms of cocaine in December 2007, which was found inside a plane.

The consignment had an estimated street value of about $1.6 million.

Three of the men will appear in Central Local Court today and another two will appear there tomorrow.

The sixth man will appear at Downing Centre Court on October 27.

Cannabis feed for chickens

A GORDONVALE man caught with almost 300 cannabis seeds in his home told police they were for his roosters.

In Cairns Magistrates’ Court yesterday, John Bates pleaded guilty to possessing dangerous drugs.

The court heard police raided Bates’ home about 9.30am on August 31 after a party there a few days before.

Police prosecutor Michelle Long said police saw Bates try to hide something in his kitchen.

Closer inspection showed 297 cannabis seeds, which Bates said were for his roosters and had been left there a few days before by a guest.

Sen-Constable Long said Bates had been convicted and fined $1500 earlier this year for producing dangerous drugs.

Defence counsel Paul Richardson said his client admitted there had been some drugs consumed by others at Bates’ home some days before.

Magistrate Joe Pinder said Bates would go to jail if he kept coming back to court for drug offences.

"I don’t accept that the seeds were for the consumption of your roosters," Magistrate Pinder said.

"You have been here a number of times before."

He ordered the defendant complete 75 hours of community service in Gordonvale, expected to include gardening work.

"He seems to have the ability to some gardening," Mr Pinder said.

Alleged cocaine syndicate dismantled

Monday, 21 September 2009

An 18 month joint investigation between the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Customs and Border Protection and New South Wales Police has resulted in six men being arrested yesterday morning for allegedly being involved in the importation of cocaine into Australia.

Three men will appear in Central Local Court today, and another two on Tuesday. The final man has been bailed to appear at the Downing Centre on 27 October.

It will be alleged in court that the men were involved in the importation of cocaine utilising airside employees who were able to retrieve narcotic packages from the arriving aircraft at Sydney International Airport.

On Sunday, 1kg of cocaine was seized with an estimated street value of $350,000.

The AFP-led investigation saw six search warrants executed across New South Wales residential addresses in Bexley, Glenwood, Matraville, Merrylands, Mascot and Maroubra - where a quantity of Australian and foreign currency was seized - and a commercial premises in Mascot.

The investigation commenced in 2007 as a result of Customs and Border Protection intelligence assessments.

Since this time, the Joint Airport Investigation Team at Sydney Airport (JAIT) has been investigating several related incidents, including the importation of 5.7 kilograms of cocaine in December 2007 from Los Angeles into Sydney located inside the aircraft. This consignment had a street value of approximately $1.6million.

AFP Acting National Manager Aviation, Commander Steve Grant, said that this investigation is among the most complex that JAIT has conducted since its inception in 2006. The investigation has seen up to 12 AFP officers working full-time on the investigation with more than 58,000 telephone calls intercepted.

“It is believed that this investigation has resulted in the dismantling of an international drug syndicate that relied upon the involvement of airport staff, which is an exceptional result,” Commander Grant said.

“The Joint Airport Investigation Team targets serious and organised crime including targeting trusted insiders (employees) who exploit or aim to exploit security vulnerabilities at major airports.”

Customs and Border Protection Regional Director NSW, Andrew Hosking, said the arrests were the result of inter-agency cooperation and collaboration.

“This operation demonstrates our capability to work with other law enforcement agencies, both in Australia and overseas, to disrupt major organised crime networks,” Mr Hosking said.

“This investigation shows that our focus is not only on passengers entering and leaving Australia, but on the broader range of activities at our international airports.”

The Unified Policing Model has been implemented at 11 major airports in Australia and relies on the close cooperation between the AFP, state and territory police, the aviation industry and government agencies to identify, assess and resolve security and crime risks facing airports.

The particular charges laid as a result of this investigation include:

* A 38-year-old Maroubra man has been charged with conspiring to import commercial quantities of border controlled drugs as per section 307.1 by virtue of section 11.5 of the Criminal Code 1995;
* A 48-year-old Bexley man has been charged with importing marketable quantities of border controlled drugs as per section 307.1 of the Criminal Code 1995 and conspiring to import commercial quantities of border controlled drugs as per section 307.1 by virtue of section 11.5 of the Criminal Code 1995;
* A 55-year-old Mascot man has been charged with conspiring to import marketable quantities of border controlled drugs as per section 307.1 by virtue of section 11.5 of the Criminal Code 1995;
* A 47-year-old Glenwood man has been charged with conspiring to import commercial quantities of border controlled drugs as per section 307.1 by virtue of section 11.5 of the Criminal Code 1995 and Possession of a marketable quantity of border controlled drugs as per section 307.1 by virtue of section 11.2 of the Criminal Code 1995;

* A 20-year-old Matraville man has been charged with dealing in proceeds of crime - money or property worth $50,000 or more - as per section 400.5 of the Criminal Code 1995.

The last offence carries a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment, while the other offences carry a maximum of 25 years.

Airline caterers ran cocaine through airport security holes

Matthew Clayfield and Joe Kelly | September 22, 2009

PAST and present airline catering staff with connections to Sydney's Bra Boys surf gang were at the heart of an alleged drug ring smuggling cocaine into Australia through the country's biggest airport.

Three of the six men arrested at the weekend appeared yesterday in Sydney Central Local Court, where it was alleged they were involved with a syndicate that used airside employees to retrieve narcotic packages from arriving aircraft and smuggle them out of the airport with the help of their security passes.

The weekend's arrests came after an 18-month investigation by the Australian Federal Police and Australian Customs into the importation of more than $2million worth of cocaine since 2007.

The investigation culminated at the weekend with raids on six Sydney homes and the seizure of a kilogram of cocaine -- with an estimated street value of $350,000 -- from a catering trolley on a flight arriving at Sydney Airport. The involvement of airside employees in the drug ring's operations echoes claims made by Schapelle Corby's defence team, who claimed corrupt baggage handlers had put 4.1kg of marijuana in her boogie board bag.

The publication of leaked reports into lax airport security, which appeared exclusively in The Australian in May 2005, led to the Howard government's commission of the Wheeler review, which confirmed the parlous state of security at our major airports.

AFP spokesman Steve Grant yesterday confirmed the airport's security framework had made it easy for the most recent group of smugglers. "It's a very clever operation that has been easily perpetrated within the security framework," Mr Grant said. "Purely because of their willingness to engage in a criminal activity."

He said the nature of the operation involved someone taking the drugs, "on to the plane, into the cabin and (secreting) them within the cabin at a location known to the catering people". It is believed that if this person was a passenger on the flight, further arrests may ensue. The investigation began in 2007 as a result of Australian Customs and Border Protection intelligence assessments and saw up to 12 AFP officers working full-time and intercepting more than 58,000 telephone calls.

The Joint Airport Investigation Team was originally put together to investigate a string of related incidents, including the importation of 5.7kg of cocaine, worth approximately $1.6m, on a December 2007 flight from Los Angeles into Sydney.

Matthew Robert Hay, 43, from Merrylands, Jose Alquillera, 47, from Glenwood and Wayne Charles Williams, 55, from Mascot appeared before the Sydney Central Local Court yesterday morning. Mr Hay and Mr Alquillera, both employees of airport catering service Gate Gourmet, appeared in the fluorescent work vests they were arrested in on Sunday morning, and were charged with possessing a marketable quantity of cocaine and conspiring to import a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.

Mr Williams, a former employee of Gate Gourmet, was also charged with conspiring to import a commercial quantity of cocaine, as well as with the actual importation of a marketable quantity of the drug. Mr Hay, the only man to apply for bail, claimed there was little evidence of his involvement in the alleged syndicate and described the case against him as "weak".

Magistrate Jane Culver disagreed, noting that he had been found in possession of cocaine and denied him bail. She ordered him to remain in custody until his next appearance in court on September 28.

Three more men -- including 20-year-old Bra Boy Jesse Pollock, who is charged with dealing in the proceeds of crime, and Bra Boys associate Wayne Cleveland, 38, who is charged with conspiring to import commercial quantities of border-controlled drugs -- are due to make court appearances over the next few days.

Both Mr Pollock and Mr Cleveland appeared in the surf gang's 2007 documentary Bra Boys and face maximum sentences of 15 and 25 years' imprisonment respectively.

Mr Alquillera is next due to front the court on November 11, while the date set for Mr Williams was October 1.

Their offences carry a maximum penalty of 25 years' imprisonment.

Bra Boys linked to airport drug bust

DYLAN WELCH

September 22, 2009

TWO men involved with the infamous Bra Boys surfing gang have been charged in relation to a $2 million cocaine smuggling ring involving airport caterers.

The pair feature in the 2007 documentary about the gang, narrated by Russell Crowe.

Wayne Cleveland, who grew up with the founders of the Bra Boys, the Abberton brothers Jai, Koby, Sonny and Dakota, was charged on Sunday with conspiring to import a commercial quantity of cocaine.

Also charged was the aspiring big wave rider and Bra Boy member, Jesse Pollock, 20. He was charged with dealing in the proceeds of crime.

The men were among six arrested in morning raids on Sunday following the seizure of one kilogram of cocaine - worth an estimated $350,000 - from an aircraft that had landed that morning at Sydney Airport.

Federal police said yesterday that employees of Gate Gourmet, a catering company, had smuggled the drugs off the plane.

''There was a member of a syndicate who brought the drugs on to the plane, into the cabin and secreted it within the cabin at a location known to the catering people,'' the federal police's national aviation manager, Steve Grant, said.

The investigation stemmed from a seizure of almost six kilograms of the drug on a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles in December 2007.

Mr Cleveland, a 38-year-old father of four, has known the Abberton brothers for more than two decades and was a member of the original ''Ma's Hell Team'' group of surfers in Maroubra.

The revelations of the alleged drug ring stunned friends of the two men yesterday.

The Reverend Steve Bligh, a Bra Boy mentor and minister at the local Anglican church, told the Herald he had just returned from visiting Mr Cleveland's wife and young children. ''Wayne was a very family-minded man and a very helpful man with the young folk around here,'' he said.

The Maroubra Surfers Church once held its Sunday prayer meetings at Mr Cleveland's home, Mr Bligh said. ''Having worked closely with these guys for a very long time, it guts me that a guy who could be so positive could end up … charged with these [crimes].''

Two others charged, Matthew Robert Hay and Jose Alquillera, were employed by Gate Gourmet. Another of the accused, Craig Nicholson, once worked for the company.

The sixth defendant, Wayne Charles Williams, is believed to have once worked at the airport.

Three of the men faced Central Local Court yesterday, where they were refused bail.

Mr Cleveland and Mr Nicholson are due to appear in the same court today and Mr Pollock, who was granted bail by police, will face the Downing Centre Local Court on October 27.

In a past interview with a surfing website, the Bra Boy boss and professional surfer Koby Abberton spoke about Mr Pollock and how he had sponsored the fledgling professional surfer.

''The fighting, the surfing, the partying- it's such a fine line between having a good time and going to jail. To be going the hardest at it, you're sometimes going to end up on the wrong end of the law.''
