Star gazing on LSD: Music Suggestions?

A few friends and I are going to be tripping under the stars this weekend. Barely any light pollution either, so we will be seeing the Milky Way and it will undoubtedly be beautiful. The plan is to start tripping 1.5 hours prior to sunrise, so we'll have a good portion of darkness but will spend the majority of the trip in sunlight.

I am making a playlist, and am pretty covered on the sunlight bit. The only issue is finding music for the star-gazing vibe. I'm looking specifically for something spiritual but not overtly religious. For example, I am including some of George Harrison (like 'The Inner Light') and Loreena Mckennitt.

I would appreciate some suggestions of artists similar to the ones mentioned. If you have music in a different genre that you believe would fit the vibe, please include that as well! All contributions are welcome :)

Thanks in advance for the help!

You seem to be specifically going for the experience of nature (stargazing) as opposed to some sort of rave. So my suggestion for the music is ......no music at all.

I did a similar thing many years ago with my girlfriend. I took her to the town I was born which, though being in flat country, had a small hill of sand which we rather prosaically knew as the Sandhills.

We got together everything we thought we would need. Tent. Music. CD player.

We never used any of them. At least, we started to use all of them and then found them all at odds with the setting we were in. Music, in particular, sounded just 'wrong' while looking at the stars.

This was one of the best nights of my life. We wandered aimlessly over the Sandhills all through a full moon lit darkness with thousands of stars to see. On the actual Sandhills themselves we spent about half an hour (?) tracking a mole. Not many people get to see a mole in their lives.

Like I said, fantastic night. And every band I thought I would need was just superfluous.

Just my two cents and all that.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have had a few recent star-gazing trips, and the first one really blew me away. My experience was exactly like yours. We wound up turning off the music and just wandering aimlessly, staring at the stars in awe. It felt like we were going to walk off the planet and float away. Absolutely life-changing.

Since then, though, I've become more accustomed to the sight. It would be nice to experience the silence of wonder again, and I will probably incorporate that for the first half hour of the trip now that you mention it. But we will want some sort of music at some point - I find that specific kinds of music can magnify that mystical experience.

The problem is, as you mentioned, that most music just feels 'wrong' in this environment. I'm having trouble finding the appropriate ones.

Yeah one of the best trips i've ever had was walking towards the faint glow of sunrise at a forest rave.
As the light got brighter, all of the forest came to life; colours grew more vivid and plentiful by the second - from shadows of browns and muted greens to bright daylight forest hues.
I had so many incredible revelations in that short walk, it was really special.

When we made our way back to the party, the human-constructed 'psychedelia' seemed so contrived and shallow that it was hard to enjoy after our meander through the wilderness.

Which is not to downplay some of the unforgettable musical experiences i've had on LSD - i've had some life-altering musical trips as well, but i agree with what SHM is saying; sometimes just listening to the sounds of the world around you (frogs, bats, the flapping of birds' wings overhead - or whatever is around) can be just as awe-inspiring on a good trip as the right music. Go with what feels right.

Also, i always notice that there are a lot more stars than usual when i look at the night sky on acid ;)

i really like finnish psychedelic/exp folk music

artists like paavoharju, islaja, lau nau

its music that makes a lot of sense to me on acid, it harks back to the simplicity of being a child, and evokes in me a sense of the esoteric/mystical and connection to nature.

Sorry, mine was a bit off topic!
I really like listening to German psychedelia such as Popol Vuh or Faust on acid.
But it depends on the mood i'm in. Sometimes i listen to the Stooges and the Velvet Underground.
I like music that has a bit of an organic pulse, which is a pretty big contrast to what other people seem to be drawn to.

Id recommend Autechre, as I do to anyone who's tripping. Particularly tracks like '1 1 is' and 'Goz quarter'

Their music, at least their output in the last decade is partly algorithmic, so synth inputs by them are altered via math algorithms they control in software like max/msp by manipulating parameters, resulting in a burst of controlled chaos. As a result it's very removed from any 'human' feeling and doesn't feel much like it's trying to be anything in particular, it just is. It has a very alien feel but is also paradoxically filled with emotion and tension... It's a very interesting experience whilst tripping

The alien/spacey/higher dimension theme of it would go very well with stargazing I imagine.. But it's far from the genre your current playlist consists of

Autechre sounds interesting, and I know a lot of people who would like it. But I personally avoid ambient music, because it makes me feel aimless and confused. I like my music to have melodic direction when tripping, mostly to maintain my sanity and good-feelings. I know not everyone experiences it the way I do, though.

It's not really ambient, more like glitch electronic/hip hop... But in a free jazz kinda way. It has a surprising amount of melodic content but you have to pay attention to latch on to what is happening, but yeah it's an acquired taste

I'm jealous, OP, I live a very light-polluted country and have to look very well before I get anywhere near a good spot to go star-gazing.

Either way, we did that recently and I'd recommend music that feels larger than life, but are very mellow at the same time. Maybe a few that tend to feel like the cosmos is about to burst out of its seams.

These worked very well for me:
- Funkadelic - Maggot Brain:

"Mother Earth is pregant for the third time... For ya'll have knocked her up." I feel like I won't do this song any justice by trying to explain it. Fun fact: The guitarist was on LSD, given his guitar and instructed to play as if he had just heard his mother died.

- John Frusciante - Before the Beginning:

Beautiful clip on that video, as well. It's a tribute to Funkadelic's Maggot Brain.

- Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy

I don't know why, but this songs makes me feel like I'm floating in space. Before I saw the clip, even.

- Porcupine Tree - Arriving somewhere but not here

Every range of emotion is encapsulated in this sing. Starts out mellow, then comes crashing down and breaks everything.

- Godspeed you! Black Emperor - Mladic

Very peaceful, yet very dark.

- Steven Wilson - Harmony Korine

Hnnnng, this made me feel like I was standing atop a mountain while the world around me came to end.

Oh, there's more, but I hate to blurt out everything. These songs work for any trip.

I caught the dawn chorus on MXE and al-lad, throw in being sleep deprived BIG time and the sound was overwhelming. I had heard the chorus often but man the sounds that stood out! One of those times I was just blown away by the volume of the world around me. Just something to keep in mind

I wouldn't rule out classical music either...I mean Beethoven under sky full of stars might be really magnificent...

Pink Floyd's Astronomie Dominie?

First record I ever heard tripping.

Depends where you are in Europe but head for rural Austria, which is basically most of Austria. Never seen so many stars in Europe in my life.

Would second that, nice stings or piano something gentle so as not to disturb your thoughts or distract from the majesty above you.
