Some quantitative results

Re: Prozac, MDMA and MAOI's. An important point needs to be clarified. When BT and others say MAOI they are referring to a drug classification. When Dr.Beat says MAOI he is in fact referring to drugs that have MAO inhibiting properties. To be precise a susbtance that has MAO inhibiting properties is not necessarily a MAOI.

The classification MAOI specifically refers to a small number of drugs that irreversibly inhibit monoamine oxidase and are not selective for one type of MAO. (There is MAO-A and MAO-B.) The only drugs classified in this way are: phenelzine, isocarboxazid and tranylcypromine. (Others used to exist but are no longer produced)

There are other drugs which have MAO inhibition properties and tend to be described in greater detail, because they don't quite fit the category above. This includes selegiline/deprenyl, which is an irreversible MAO-B inhibitor (at lower doses, but it inhibits both MAO-B and MAO-A at higher doses);moclobemide, a reversible inhibitor of MAO; harmala and harmaline (inhibitors of MAO-A)

When DrBeat says Prozac, amphetamine and MDMA are MAOI's, technically it's not correct. None of these drugs are classified as MAOI's because they don't fit the description above. Their primary actions are not via MAO inhibition, though it is true that they all have MAO inhibition properties They are all also reversible inhibitors of MAO, meaning MAO's effects will return in less than 24 hours on cessation of the substance.

I can find no evidence that DXM has MAO inhibition properties, though it does have SSRI properties.

It is well established that combining a MAOI with either MDMA or other amphetamines can be fatal. Taking Prozac with MDMA and amphetamines doesn't cause the same problems, probably because the SSRI effects are predominant (I'm guessing) blocking MDMA's effects almost entirely.

Re: DXM mixed with MDMA. Dr Beat said:
If a pill contains MDMA and DXM and you TEST IT, it will see only a MDMA result.
Not true. You will get a result for what exists in the greatest proportion in the pill. While it is true that there are some pills at www.ecstasydata.org containing a mix of DXM and MDMA, the bulk of DXM containing pills contain DXM alone. The pills at that site are not from Australia. I am yet to be convinced DXM pills have been seen in Australia. Analysis of seized pills tested by the Victoria Forensic Science lab for last year found that 84% of seized pills were MDMA alone (this was in the paper recently, and is quoted here. Only 4% of seized pills contained something other than MDMA, amphetamine, caffeine or ketamine (being either dud or containing another substance).

It is more likely imho that mixing DXM with MDMA is an attempt to gain a purple-black reaction on a reagent tester, rather than an attempt to create a synergistic effect.

Excellent post superbabydoc. There should be little left to ask on the basics of MAOI's as it's all here.
