Mental Health Social Anxiety tips

This is an older that was recently bumped but there is some decent content here, it really belongs in the Mental Health forum where it will get more attention and perhaps help some folks out. I'm going to send it over there. MH mods do as you see fit.

30 days without getting yourself off just sounds unhealthy to me, excluding cases in which you have another person to fulfill that task for you...

I used to be very introverted and socially anxious I suppose...my mid-teens especially. About 10 years later, I don't really consider myself to have social anxiety anymore. I've been trying to pinpoint why that change occurred for me, because it wasn't any kind of conscious effort on my part. As simple and dumb as it sounds, I think that a large part of why I "overcame social anxiety" was the fact that a lot of terrible shit happened to me in recent years, and the opinions that other people hold of me (especially complete strangers) doesn't really faze me at all compared to the horror that is my own life. :) Simply don't care about it anymore. (Still have anxiety though, it's just not triggered by social situations anymore...)

Also, much of my later life was spent being high on various drugs, and I'm someone for whom "drugs", generally-speaking, pretty much complete eliminates my social anxiety (including ones that some users find anxiogenic like strong amphetamines, hallucinogens & cannabis)
 
I have a lot of physical anxiety that can (and often does) end up being social anxiety.

When I'm sober (like now) I do some pushups or shadowbox or whatever the fuck to release some endorphins and put me in a good mood.

Also momentum is key. If I haven't talked to a stranger in a while I shut down socially. If I start talking to girls or whatever (usually girls, I'm not interested in male friends in particular but always horny) I get more and more confident as I go.

Weight lifting helps a lot for me. I'm a man so more testosterone = more confidence = less anxiety.

Dress fly, have immaculate hygiene.

I've never had a medication help me with social anxiety. Hard drugs (namely GHB and dissociative anesthetics) can help but they fuck you up.

I've recently started CBT and I find it immensely helpful but haven't really worked it with social anxiety, only my propensity to be paranoid and my tendency to misinterpret events and fly into a rage.

I don't masturbate at all, period. Only when on amphetamines (which was often) but I'm working on recovery now.

Masturbation is unhealthy, and makes it hard to relate to women. If I'm masturbating I pretty much need a dime piece to get hard.

I shower every morning, so if I'm in a dry spell busting in my sleep isn't much of a problem.

I also prescribe no masturbation to anyone having trouble with women.

No masturbation + hard excercise = porn star sex drive.
 
What exactly does masturbating have to do with social anxiety? I always feel better after I rub one out.

Besides that, I would say that having a healthy diet and doing some kind of exercise has always helped me. I personally find that lifting weights is a great way to get rid of some of the nervous energy. Will it cure you? Probably not, but I've definitely found it beneficial.
 
If I'm actually in a relationship with another person, then yeah I'll reduce the amount of times I work one out for myself, sometimes stopping entirely. But otherwise? Fuck that. :) My hand & I are best buddies, if ever there was a healthy way to relieve anxiety that is it, IMO
 
No, in reality, not only is masturbation, or at least, compulsive and/or excessive masturbation associated with the use of pornography associated with a host of social and psychological evils, but it makes quite fundamental changes which can account for anxiety among other symptoms:

Frequent masturbation and ejaculation stimulate acetylcholine/parasympathetic nervous functions excessively, resulting in the over production of sex hormones and neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, dopamine and serotonin. Abundant and unusually amount of these hormones and neurotransmitters can cause the brain and adrenal glands to perform excessive dopamine-norepinephrine-epinephrine conversion and turn the brain and body functions to be extremely sympathetic. In other words, there is a big change of body chemistry when a client compulsively masturbates.

For the client engaging in compulsive masturbation, they often experience problems with concentration and memory. This is a dangerous side effect of compulsive masturbation and signals that the brain is being over drained of acetylcholine. This behavior can also drain the motor nerves, neuro-muscular endings, and tissues of acetylcholine and replace it with too much stress adrenalin which is where memory loss, lack of concentration, and eye floaters come from. To fight these symptoms, the chemical levels in their body needs to be balanced. (source)

There is always "too much of a good thing". You can also eat too much food and get fat. I don't really see how compulsive/excessive masturbation has to do with what I'm talking about...unless you're just making a general comment. In which case yeah I agree, excessively pleasing yourself to the extent that it disrupts your day-to-day life and responsibilities as an adult = bad, LOL
 
I'm speaking against maturbation as an anxiolytic/coping mechanism (see: the above pharmacological stuff but also socially) and making a general comment about it's dangers in general.
 
Masturbation is cool if you're not that into sex.

I don't masturbate. I am so horny I am insane. I just work out til I pass out and scheme on multiple girls simultaneously. Try it and thank me. One week in you'll feel it.

On Topic: I agree that masturbation can be an unhealthy habit. Excessive masturbation can change our brain chemistry, sort of like drugs. And affect the way we interact with others.
