Opioids How come everytime i have a tablet / pain killer the left side of my stomach gets little aches and pains?

Did you see a doctor about this? Codeine absolutely shouldn't induce pain and it isn't known as having toxic effects either. Sorry that I can't help you more but I'd absolutely getting this checked. Maybe just visit the doc's next time you experience the pain, so no need to mention that you were using codeine (or do you have a script for it? Then of course mention it).

i don’t have a script for it and i wouldint say it’s really painful it’s just a slight sharp pain or feels like a strain every so often in my left side of my belly on my sides i am getting a blood test 2nd november, i had a piss test and that came back fine and they pressed on my stomach an said it feels fine what do you make of this?

We wouldn't be doing you any favors by trying to deduce the cause of this pain man. It's not that we don't want to help, it's just that it could be a nearly infinite number of different things. An allergy to some constituent of the tablet? Perhaps the Codeine is inducing some kind of painful indigestion (it is an Opioid and is known to have powerful effects upon the digestive tract, where most of the body's Opioid receptors are located). It could be a lot of different things. All we can say responsibly, is that if the pain is causing you serious trouble, you need to see a specialist to have them figure out what it is.

I have been taking codeine phosphate 60 mg about 6 tablets a day for 12 months not scripted just using them recreational and i am half hooked on them, do you think this could really effect your body as there is no paracetamol in them or could they give me liver or kidney failure or disease or destroy them as i’m fit an healthy other than that attend gym go to work but just get these little slight pains and have hard shits sometimes but if blood when i wipe because i end up tearing because my stools are hard of the opiates what do you guys think

Sometimes daily use of ANYTHING can cause mild gastritis. I was taking too much ibuprofen before, and it basically stripped my stomach lining! I had no idea that something that was over the counter could harm me like that. Usually people associate OTC meds, especially the more common ones, with being harmless. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In another thread, someone was wondering why they don’t make all non-recreational controlled meds, such as vasodilators or antibiotics, freely available OTC. This is a good example of why not. I consider myself a fairly intelligent person, and yet I made a rather stupid assumption, which was that I could continue to use OTC meds daily. No one ever told me otherwise and I didn’t bother (like most people, I would assume) to read the tiny print on the back of the bottle. Even smart people do stupid things, and this is why the government regulates things. It doesn’t prevent all negative consequences, but I am sure it keeps the death rate down.

To sum up: maybe don’t use codeine DAILY, or, like me, you may end up being unable to stomach it at all.

i will have a read through it all now thanks for the info guys and i have been trying to cut down to weekend use only

yeah man as you said the codeine is causing you constipation which is causing the bits of blood when you wipe. other than that the amount of codeine your taking shouldnt cause any major internal damage. but you are right to try and reduce your usage to just on the weekends. its really addictive

ibuprofen is very well known for damaging the stomach lining!
i will do i have been currently just taking about 4 codeine 240 mg spread out on a saturday and sunday, is dehydrocodeine the exact same effects i’ve been using them instead at a lower dose of 30 mg per tablet now on weekends instead of codeine phosphate and really do need to get some laxatives but don’t want stuff that damages the kidneys or liver got a blood test coming up on 4th november just to get everything checked out haha with these stomach noises an aches down the sides

are you taking ANY thing else at all that could cause the stomach thing??? even caffeine and chili can fuck up your stomach if your sensitive to it
i have coffees everyday but don’t over do it only 1-2 max, i don’t take anything else only things i have is codeine and dehydrocodeine and they are not mixed with paracetamol or ibuprofen just pure codeine phosphate and pure dehydrocodeine i’m just more worried about the odd aches and pains i get down my sides, but never had them last year before i started codeine but every forum and post i see says there not toxic to your stomach unless you have paracetamol mixed with them but with me that’s not the case, just hope it can’t damage my kidneys/liver, and i hardly eat spicy foods.

You need to see a Dr and it looks like you’ve arranged that.

Codeine does cause constipation, you’ve said you have hard stool and there is blood when you wipe. Even if you’re eliminating you can still be constipated which can cause pain up the digestive tract, the blood suggests the stool is hard enough to cause damage when you pass it. You should be taking an osmotic laxative if you’re taking codeine. They are gentle laxatives and just bring water to the bowel, they aren’t habit forming either.

I can’t give you any ideas on what your pain is, you’re better to speak to your dr and arrange further testing.

Laxatives aren’t harmful on the kidneys just make sure you are drinking enough water which is what you should be doing anyway. An osmotic laxative is perfectly fine to use unless you have a condition that is contraindicated.

Why the worry about your kidneys/liver? Have you family history of issues or are you just worrying due to your use of codeine?

i’m just worrying due to my codeine usage over my kidneys and liver and because i was getting the pains down my side of my stomach everytime i was having then i have been taking 240 mg everyday for about a years time so was sort of worrying that they could of caused effect to my kidneys but i’m not sure or clued up on it they don’t contain paracetamol or anything extra in them just codeine

Ok I understand, you’re right to go to your Dr and make sure to get checked out. If you’re getting the pain when you are taking codeine then it could be that causing it, although I’m unsure of why it would be other than thinking it could be something to do with your GI tract, it will slow it down hence the constipation.

Long term use of codeine isn’t good and you know this, hence your worry. I would advise you to taper yourself down and come off them.

True. But if one isn’t informed of this, how are they to know? No one ever warned me about ibuprofen (and as I said, I stupidly didn’t read the directions.) I’ve been playing fast and loose with substances since I was a teenager, including doing things I KNEW were probably damaging, such as taking Tylenol for a hangover the morning after drinking. You just never think the consequences will catch up to you when you’re young because you feel fine. Until you don’t.
