Hosting a warehouse party

Be aware that gatherings of more than <x> people (not sure of figures, from memory is only something like 100) need a permit from the council to take place. Back in about 2002 or so, nightclubs were losing money because everyone was raving every weekend. So the Nightclub Owners Association lobbied the government to make it harder (practically impossible) for warehouse parties to get those permits. This is what killed the rave scene and the warehouse party scene in Melbourne. Now the only people that can make it happen are the huge franchises like Gods Kitchen etc. And yes if you throw your party without a permit it will get shut down by the cops.

Other points:

1) Expect to make a loss - people suck and only 2/3rds of promised people will actually rock up
2) Make sure you have professional security!! As said previously, people suck, especially people on drugs (or worse - alcohol) who do unexpected things. A guest list might be a good idea, even if it means you don't get enough people to make a profit.
3) Normally your biggest expense would be your public liability insurance. Be aware that if someone gets injured at your rave they can (and these days WILL) take you to court. If you don't have public liability you are exposing yourself to SERIOUS debt, in the millions. Again, people suck.
4) The previous post saying you won't enjoy it is a good point - if you can manage it, delegate jobs to others so your not running round all night having a shit time.
5) I had a good friend who used to put on raves and he gave a free bottle of water to every punter on entry. A good idea from a harm reduction point of view. Water in bulk only costs 50cents or so a bottle so can be done cheaply.
6) Sound system is important. Don't skimp.
7) Thats all i can think of....
