The North Hollywood Shootout Feb 28, 1997 - one of only three televised images that I will NEVER be able to erase from my memory.

Heat is one of the most intelligently done movies I've ever seen. The simplicity almost forces you to really observe the people and situation as opposed to watching the movie as a whole. I don't think I'm saying this correctly. :) Heat is definelty a movie that can be appreciated on so many levels.

Easily one of my all-time favorites and possibly my desert island movie. One of the very rare movies with a perfect sense of pacing. I cried at the ending, too.

An old favourite of mine too. One of Val Kilmer's best roles since Madmartigan ;) Add in De Niro and Pacino and how could you go wrong? =D

Someone might want to adjust the poll though - two "3 Star" options.

I think Heat is terrific, but I've read/heard that Pacino and DeNiro were filmed on different sound stages for the coffee shop scene, which is kind of a bummer if true. I remember sitting in awe in the movie theater during that scene. Nevertheless, loved the movie, and have seen it many, many times.

"Cause she got a great ass! And you got your head all the way up it!"

^Even if that's true, I don't see why it would be a bummer. Fakery is an essential part of movie magic.

Understood, but the best part of that scene for me at the time was two legends doing a scene together. It's still an excellent scene, but it's lost a little something for me if it wasn't really happening that way.

one of my favorites. as a big fan of noir/neo-noir film, i found it to be just so perfect that i can't even discuss this movie in any format shorter than an essay

i get such a good kick out of this http://dontwastemymotherfuckingtime.ytmnd.com/ i put it on a voice recorder and keep it next to my phone :D

The music at the end of this film almost makes the film for me.

don't get me wrong it's fantastic all the way through but then the end scene with Moby's "God moving over troubled waters" is just fantastic.

^ pedant in me requires me to say that the correct name of the track is "god moving over the face of the waters".

it is a great, beautiful track.

Can't force a procrastinating movie buff to watch movies ya know. It just happens ;)

Bobby De is a genius, Iam a lover of nearly all of his works,Ive watched all of his movies hundreds of times and a testament to him is the rediculous amount of modern day classics he has starred in, RagingBull, taxi driver, once upon a time in america,Godfather2,Casino,Goodfellas, I could go on all day, but what I love about him is as an individual he´s not and never has been a attention seeker like so many of todays stars, He is the consumate professional he is the star of the movie not the star/celebrity of the nightclub/magazine cover,or any of the rest of the fake ass bullshit other actors do,

i angrily disagree. michael mann is what MADE this movie great. without his writing and directing, it could easily have turned into another classic 90s shoot-em-up action blockbuster that's not worth remembering. the subplots are masterfully woven together with the noir elements for the sole purpose of supporting the tragic story about de niro and pacino's characters.

as if that weren't enough, the ending is simply one of the best endings in any movie, ever. it's poignant, brilliant, and if meaning was weight that ending bore more of it than atlas. taking the final battle to the airport was fucking brilliant. the interplay of shadows with random lighting from aircraft was a brilliant touch of noir, carefully underscoring the turbulent, dark and paradoxical natures of these characters. that's not even to mention the ending music that, i assure you (it's in the commentary) was very carefully selected to rendered it all like watching a dream unfold in sharp focus.

if you can't see that, you must have been watching some OTHER film. or you're simply not a fan of noir. i'm guessing it's the latter because there was really nothing wanting in the plot itself. i wouldn't fault you, noir can be boring and this film was anything but (and three hours of it to boot!) which is precisely what makes it such an undeniable epic in the genre.

for those that like the end song, unkle made a very nice mashup of it with one of their tunes and it's quite masterfully done.

andy mcnabb (ex-SAS and author of various books including 'bravo two zero') was a consultant on the movie.

i'm told that he watched it with a bunch of SAS guys and they all cheered at one point when val kilmer changed a magazine with perfect technique.

they show scenes from the movie to you in the marines when they are teaching you how to do quick reloads and point out the cover techniques. that is exactly how you advance/assault.

i hysterically agree!

michale mann does great gunbangstuff

In the hands of a more capable director...
i'm going to agree with thujone and disagree with you strongly. michael mann is an entirely capable director and heat is, for me, one of his better flicks.

it's paced beautifully, it's taut and economical when it needs to be but it goes all out, without becoming comical, when it needs to. it's also puctuated by some beautiful shots in and around la, both during the day and at night.
