films: best sports movie? (last call for nominations for a poll)

Pride, of 2007 about Jim Ellis and how he created a swim team in a poor black 1970s Philadelphia city. Made me cry about every 10-5 minutes. Very motivational.

I know it has already been mentioned, but Field of Dreams has to be up there,
Football movies should get a category all on their own, there are definitely just too many great ones to put them with all the other sports movies. Most of them have already been mentioned here.

I liked Field of Dreams...even though I think baseball is the most boring sport ever.

Raging Bull is the best! And I really love Lucas too....I watched this over and over again on BETAMAX when I was a kid.

1. Invinsible -with Mark Wahlberg. It hits all the right spots. The last scene will make you cry.
2. Hoosiers - with Gene Hackman. Great soundtrack. Really captures the feel of Indiana high school basketball in the 1950's.
3. The Program - I believe James Spader is in this. Great look at the annals of the college football world and the tremendous pressure on the kids who play the game.
4. Pumping Iron - with Arnold Shawartzeneger (sp). Not as much of a sports movie but a documentary about bodybuilding. I love this film because Arnold is one goofy dude throughout the whole thing. He's got a strong Austrian accent, and he smokes a big fat joint in the end.
5. Blue Chips - with Nick Nolte. A good look at the insides of college basketball recruiting. Plus Shaq is in it.

Mariacallas- LUCAS! I forgot about that one! Definitely not a good sports movie but Haim is the man!

Any sports themed 80's movie is awesome in my book.

No, he's not in it. maybe you're thinking of craig sheffer as Kane?

I bought that movie at a pawn shop for a dollar about a year ago and haven't seen it yet. I'll have to check it out. If he's half as good in Invinsible as he is in this scene, then I got my money's worth.

Friday Night Lights hands down! Love the soundtrack too
Hoosiers
Greatest game ever played
Tin Cup

There are far too many sports movies to even begin making a poll. Then there's the whole, "What constitutes a sports movie?"

Is Over The Top a sports movie? Sure, the plot is lame as lame gets (arm wrestling) but there are plenty of spectators watching and cheering as two men try and beat one another.

What about The Wrestler? I haven't been able to see it yet, but is professional wrestling even considered a sport? And if so, why? Two muscle-bound, sweaty men trying to shove their opponent's head between their legs sounds closer to gay porn.

199 Lives: The Travis Pastrana Story
