Good movie, but not great. The payoff does not justify the annoyingly slow and erratic pace. Well, not enough to give me a high buzz.
There were some very promising ideas in it, but they generally fall short in the execution. Having the protagonist freaked the fuck out is all well and good, but I prefer to also be freaked the fuck out.

I feel like a tool, sorry.

Does anyone know how close The Machinist and Batman were made? Bale is barely recognisable in the first few shots, absolutely haunting.

I cant stop thinking about it. I'd rate this movie very highly.

there was a fair bit of time between them, bale went upto 215 lbs for batman, and was told by nolan it was too much and went back down to 180-190, the machinist filmed a long time ago, like spring 2003, whilst batman was done last spring, so id guess there was around a year between end of machinist and starting to film batman, which just goes to show, its a lot harder to gain weight than it is to lose it ( well ive found that to be true, lol)

After adjusting to bale's appearance seeing him 'normal' in the few scenes made him look quite different aswell.

To take on this role and do it so well deserves credit. The extremities of the roles taken on by bale are huge. Not everyone's 'cup of tea' obviously. Unbelievable.

I saw this moving on Friday night. It was one of the most unreal movies ive seen in a really long time. I really enjoyed it.

Bale was really skinny in it. He looked almost alien because he was so skinny.

Oh and to answer your question Gilly in my oppinion Ivan was a figment of Trevors imagination. Sort of like a physical manifestation of guilt from the car accident and insomnia.

I can't stop raving about this movie its friggin fanstatic.

there was apparently six months in between each film's shooting schedule.

i looked it up..
the "machinist" shot for 75 days from mid june to mid september 2003, batman started filming at university college london at russell square in march 20th 2004,

you are a DON 1234 =D

is the correlation between this movie and NIN the fact that christian bale's character is named trevor reznik (trent reznor)? or is there something else?

I really loved this movie. It's hard to describe it to people that haven't seen it without giving anything away, so I'll just leave it at that. Very different, interesting, and original. And I have nothing but respect for all that Bale went through for the role.

contains spoilers

i thought it was a good movie, prolly one of the better movies i have seen. but not very original. well written and acted however.

i read on IMDB that bale dropped down to 120 pounds for the movie. he wanted to lose more weight, but the doctor wouldn't let him for fear of his health.

the only connection to NIN i saw was the resemblance of names.

***warning... HUGE spoilers below*** like don't read below if you don't want the movie ruined. STAY AWAY!!

ivan is trevor reznick before the accident. after the accident he adopted another personality to forget what happened. think about the similarities... ivan drives a car that once belonged to reznick. in the photo, his GF tells trevor that its him and some dude holding a fish. whenever trevor is talking ivan, he is alone, no one else sees ivan.

eh, i was a bit let down by teh obviousness of the story but i had my hopes too high for this one. it was still good. i love bale.

I have this ready to be watched tomorrow. Ill give it as soon as I watch it.

just rewatched "angel heart" the other day, a lotta similarities to this one, same for " lost highway" the dvd cover i have claims it was " fight club meets memento" but i found it more similar to the previous 2 i named.even shades of "dead man" in there.

I enjoyed this movie but the story really didn't seem to be anything original. I find a cross between Memento and Fight Club (as it says on the cover) to be an extremely adequate summation of the film. The ending didn't come as a huge surprise to me, I wasn't blown away.

Christian Bale really is a fantastic actor though. For films he will even start talking in the accent for a role he has to play months before shooting starts and it takes him a while to lose it after a film too :)

It wasn't too bad for his wife, Sibi Blazic - Winona Ryder's former assistant and currently an independent film producer - having to live with Batman. The long shoot meant he didn't have to be as intense in his approach to the character: 'I think he was probably a simple one to deal with.'

Unlike, say, when he played Bateman: 'I certainly know that my wife and friends have times when later on they say, "Man, we just couldn't stand you at that time." So yeah, I have discovered that I do behave differently
