From Lion's Gate:Hard Candy-A shocker of a film

Lions Gate Buys Another Controversial Film

Lions Gate Films is likely courting public controversy once again with its decision to pay $4 million for David Slade's Hard Candy, which screened last week at the Sundance Film Festival. Boston Globe critic Ty Burr described the movie in today's (Tuesday) edition as one of the few at the festival to "draw blood ... make people uncomfortable and angry." Burr said that although the movie starts out as "a carefree drama," it later "takes a left turn into an altogether different movie -- one that owes as much to horror and suspense as to social-message melodrama -- and it is that movie that divided audiences." Burr quotes one volunteer ticket-taker who remarked after hearing a couple discussing whether to see it, "Dude, I saw that thing. ... Stay away. I mean it: Stay away." Slade said that during a Q&A session after a screening, one man "started screaming at me, 'What gives you the right to make this film?' and I thought he was going to attack me.'" One woman who saw it, however, remarked, "I thought it was fantastic ... but I still haven't decided whether I liked it." Another woman remarked: "Everyone should see it. ... Especially men." Lions Gate President Tom Ortenberg conceded that the movie "will shock many people, but I think that's a good thing."

Lion's Gate is easily my favorite movie company, producing such movies as Open Water,Saw,May and Cabin Fever. If Hard Candy is an indication of what they have been churning out lately,I can't wait to see it.

I really hate when people start describing movie's as "shocking" and "controversial", especially if it is used as an advertisment. Not that they all are bad, but the "shocking" part is always a big dissapointment. Most people just over react or don't relize it was a movie they watched.

Here is the plot for Hard candy:
"A provocative drama about a 32 year-old man who takes home a 14 year-old girl he meets on the Internet, with surprising consequences. "

"Dude, I saw that thing. ... Stay away. I mean it: Stay away."
'What gives you the right to make this film?'
Of course i haven't seen the movie myself, but i'm willing to take a bet these people are far to oversensitive. 8)

just watched it. WOW, wicked awesome flick, the girl that played halie was perfect for that role. cool story, never a dull moment and well directed. i give it 4 stars. anyone else get a chance to see it ? if not i definetly recommend it.

great film. when only 2 actors hold you on th edge of your seat you know it's good. Where the film succeeds is in it's ability to make YOU feel creepy. Much like THe Professional in the sense they put a young girl in a seductive light to fuck with you. With in 5 minutes of starting Hard Candy I had to stop and search IMDB.com to make sure she was over 18. They fuck with your senses hard core.

not really but perhaps a spoiler...

sure the purpose of the film may have been to create hatred towards her for her actions, a reversal of some sort so a male can empathise with a female victim, but to tell you the truth, i wanted to kill her before they even got to his place lol.

ive just watched it and i rank it in the top 5 of the films ive seen in my life, it was great film that kept me in suspense the whole time and has a great storyline, it was one of the most controversial and shocking films ive ever seen but still nonetheless a great film.

Maybe you need to go out and watch more than five movies.

Please don't get me wrong, it was a decent movie... but to call it among the best is stretching it. The girl was a good actress (aside from her constantly scratching her brow... but that is another thread) and the dude was believable as the slimeball, but the whole plot was very very contrived... a lot like Lucky Number Slevin in the way everything works out according to plan.

All in all, I enjoyed the flick, I just don't understand either side of all the attention it's getting. I didn't find it anywhere near as controversial or evil or stirring or thought provoking as it has been made out to be.

For my money, next time I want to watch a movie about a dude tied to a chair while someone exacts a slow, painful revenge I'll rent Swimming with Sharks.

I can't wait to see this movie, but I can't convince my girlfriend to watch it.

^I'd get a new g/f even if it was porn.

I wonder why he can't see it alone, though.

oh, and on the movie. I found it somewhat entertaining; I liked the film visually and thought the camera work was really well done. Plot wise, not so much. Way too far fetched and hoaky for me.

reminds me of Audition, and Fatal Attraction, with some sick pedophile stuff mixed in

Bloody pathetic film!

The idea of giving the girl the role of predator is original, I'll give it that.

But..

Spare me the village indignation for the next pogrom. It's an example of art stuck up it's own butthole. Had the underlying theme gone past righteous anger, maybe with a surreal twist the film would have had more merit, the plot and setting could fit nicely into a play exploring the complex subject of paedophilia.

The characters were one-sided and uninteresting. The photographer? Oh I get it, even slick, good-looking professionals can be raging monsters, how clever! Mothers beware! The girl played her part well, but too well, too deliberate to give this character any depth(depth is something lacking throughout the entire film). She’s trying too hard to be ‘badass’ and it shows. A touch of absurd surrealism would have pardoned that aspect, but this film takes itself far too seriously.

Nothing special here IMO.

After hearing the general premise of the story, I really dont feel like seeing this movie
