EADD Film Recommendations v5 - TBC

I remember Savages! Great film. Will re watch it later. Good review MDB

i watched savages today and really enjoyed it. salma hayek is so hot :)

On the subject of savages, Savage Nights (French: Les Nuits Fauves), Cyril Collard. I really recommend this one.

Watched the recent Star Wars earlier. Things wrong with it: Fin. And the fact that all not-Vaders have been shit and this one is no exception. Fin. Few other niggles but mostly alright. That fukkin' Fin better pick up in the next two though :!

I watched it only a couple of months ago, managing to avoid any spoilers in the meantime. I'd expected it to be brilliant from the reviews and hype but found it to be a bit shite! I still love Star Wars though, so I will consume any film they throw at me for the foreseeable future.

Just read there's a biopic of Miles Davis hitting the cinema screen. Honna have to check that out.

This reminds me I forgot all about that James Brown movie- will have to check that muthafucka out asap

I got a little mixed up and was thinking of the awesome Ray Charles biopic staring Jamie Foxx that was released in 2004. All of his biggest hits are so well known though i was never a huge admirer until i saw the film Ray. It's a fantastic film, depicting Ray Charles creative processes as he went through the grips of Heroin addiction, losing his greatest loves to the drug in the process. "Hit The Road Jack" was literally created on the spot out of thin air after one of his tumultuous love affairs. Ray Charles did not have a clue that he was playing to racially segregated audiences, but once he found out he refused to perform, and he became a hugely influential and important figure in taking a stand against such racial segregation in the USA.

Sounds good MDB, think il have a look at that today , sort of film I'd enjoy.

Actually that can go on hold savages sounds even better. Got the gaff to myself today think I'll watch it before picking little legs up from school. Cheers MDB.

Pretty much same as. I've never expected the prequel and sequel films to be up to the standard of the originals (ROtJ was hardly stellar - the novelty factor does tend to play a part in these things alongside the age you view such things at) so try not to make direct comparisons cos that's always going to end in disappointment. This one certainly has big annoyances but overall I thought it was just ahead on what I would expect - could definitely have been a whole helluva lot worse. They really need to lose the godawful buddy movie dialogue though :|

Last couple watchings I viewed were both pretty grim in their own ways. You have been warned... ;)

First up was Mum & Dad. As anti-recommended by Ms Flo a while back. Think she described it as the most disturbing thing she'd ever seen. I've definitely seen a helluva lot worse but it's still pretty grim. Suppose it was intended somewhat as a low-budget British response to the Torture Porn craze. Doesn't have the gore of Hostel et al but is all the more unpleasant for that. Whilst yer bogstandard Torture Porn flicks are stupidly OTT urban legendesque films, this is properly nasty. It's the inevitable echoes of the real-life horrors of Fred & Rose, Brady & Hyndley et al. Uncomfortable viewing without any of the easy shocks of just smothering everything in blood. Stars the young girl from Game of Thrones with a truly awful "Polish" accent. Not that she is able to speak much...

Next up was The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence). Where else to go after the first two? How's about taking it to the most ridiculous extremes imaginable? Yup, that'd be where. George HW Bush Penitentiary is the worst performing, worst run, and just plain worst prison in America. Run by a Nazi loony who snacks on the clitorises of African FGM victims (yes, really) and the castrated nadgers of the prisoners he really doesn't like, with his ever-faithful accountant snapping at his heels because his notion of returning to "mediaeval torture" as the best way to deal with expanding prison populations is just too pricey. How to solve this quandary? How about showing him the first two Human Centipede flicks and inviting the director to consult on a new project of prison reform... As stupid as it sounds and then some but surprisingly entertaining once you accept it on it's own delirious terms. By far the most entertaining of the three. Although I realise that is not saying much...

I watched the 2013 remake of Evil Dead on Film 4 the other night. It was really very good, a million times better than the 1981 original which seems laughable in comparison as it has dated so badly, but in the new film the overall quality, tension and action sequences were ratcheted up right from the start and sustained right the way through the film keeping you hooked on the edge of your seat throughout.

There are some slight variations in the plot, one of the group of friends plans to use the time spent miles from anywhere to quit unspecified drugs, and a lot of the first apparent siteings of the demons are initially rationalised away as some kind of drug withdrawal induced delerium. When the evil spirits get unwittingly summoned (Christ the guy reading "that book" aloud was one dumb fucker) and possesses its' hosts one by one this in particular is so much better done than the original, where the special effects were pretty much limited to insanely applied make-up, and those demon eyes and voice have also been improved upon. All the action sequences are way better too. They could have made an equally crap cheap and nasty remake, glad they made the effort to produce a decent film.

Just watched the remake myself and although I couldn't disagree more on the relative merits of the original (it's a classic for a reason) I would agree they did a great job with the remake. The fact that the producer, writer/director and star of the original are all involved in the new version would suggest that - as Sam Raimi himself has noted in interviews - it's probably closer to what he wanted to achieve back then but given it was his first film and basically thrown together (for just $10000 if memory serves) I don't think it's entirely fair to make direct comparisons as far as the technical side does. What made the original so good was the energy and relentless tension which was very original at the time - and this is just what the newer version achieves for audiences that have had 35 years of horror flicks inspired by the original Evil Dead to desensitise them to stuff that just wouldn't have been possible back then. The original is the original and it is a legend in its own lifetime, but the remake is a belter as such things go I would agree.

Also acquired an alternate cut put together by fans that I've not watched yet. Will be interesting to see what they've done.

10 Cloverfield Lane.

Loved it, brilliant acting, the ending was a lil bit of a letdown though

.

Fair points about my slagging off 35 year old films. I must admit i do have a tendency to do that, failing to make allowances for the time it was made etc.

The only "old film" that ive watched recently and thought was really fantastic was The French Connection (1971), which makes it more or less as old as me.

I last tried watching it when i was about 16 but could not get into it, as i disliked Gene Hackman at that time for some bizzare reason. I have got over that by now though. :D I also think the film was just too 'adult' for me at such a young age.

That film is so good it does not require any 'allowances for when it was made' and truly stands the test of time imo, and is still an edge of the seat blockbuster to this day, the car chase scene is still regarded as one of the best sequences ever put together and rightly so. The car chases out of much more recent films like Taken are also right up there imo.
