This I was wondering too. Morphine has a weak affinity to KOR afaik, so it might fit with that the hallucinations are most pronounced when taking a high dose and fade away with tolerance. But I had strong auditoral ones from just 2mg bupe while nodding (w/o tolerance) and this was the first time ever I had any voices. And it's an antagonist at KOR..
Bupe is a little bit of an enigma wrt where and in what nature its metabolites bind--what subtypes and the strength/significance of the binding. I think there's a non-opioid nociceptive receptor that it tangles with, too. Who knows, could somehow effect endocannabinoid neurotransmission as a secondary mechanism.
But it's viable for depression (and probably anxiety) in many cases (non-doctoral opinion, but have seen it given for depression). Methadone isn't, it's just meant to block recreational opioids from binding.
