I do a radio show for uni where we specialise in all things redone, rehashed, remade, reprogrammed.

Yes, I am talking covers!!

Our final show is in two weeks and I would love to compile a list of the Best and Worst covers of all time. So now over to Bluelight, tell what are your favourites, the ones we could have done without and WHY.........

Madonna - American Pie

She should be shot for ruining this song, it is a classic and having her girate her granny flaps to it in no way does it justice...

<3

I love the Incubus version of The Penguins - Earth Angel - - - very funny and awesome and all of those good things. :).
They also did a mad cover of The Police - Message In A Bottle.

Also a big fan of Killing Heidi's cover of Silverchair - Tomorrow. Amazing and perhaps more powerful than the original.
They did a pretty cool version of Kiss - I Was Made For Loving You.

Fahrenheit 451 did an abismal version of The Cure - The Blood... ::Shudder::
Dinosaur Junior did an amazing job of The Cure - Just Like Heaven.

Hope this helps. :):D:).

Best: Ryan Adams - Wonderwall.

I'm not a huge fan of Ryan Adams generally, but this is really awesome. Rivals the Oasis version easily.

Worst: Kasey Chambers - True Colours

Butchered.

Does JJJ's Like a Version count? Theres some great stuff on there.

I liked Marilyn Manson's cover of Personal Jesus last year. Tainted love wasn't bad either.

hmmmm i don't know about best and worse on the spot ;)

but comfortably numb - scissor sisters would definitely be up there as one of the best

i'm with BBG on the madonna - american pie effort...absolutely fucking abysmal :X

will add more when i'm at home with my itunes! :D

Choices for best:

Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb (I actually had no idea it was that song until like weeks after I'd heard it)

Tori Amos - Smells Like Teen Spirit (while the original captures a lot of the anger and apathy of youth, I think Tori's version is a lot more haunting and sad)

Tiny Tim - It's A Long Way To The Top If You Wanna Rock and Roll (because Tiny Tim rocks, get fucked if you disagree)

Marilyn Manson - Working Class Hero (Even though I <3 Manson LOTS, I generally don't care much for Manson doing covers because they're usually lazy and easy...he does a really good version of this song though, brings out a lot of bitterness)

Placebo - Johnny and Mary (this is an old Robert Palmer song...I never really thought about the lyrics until I heard Placebo sing it)

Mr Floppy - Wuthering Heights (because it's hell funny)

Cake - I Will Survive (it's just cool)

Johnny Cash - Hurt (I heard this version before the Nine Inch Nails one and thought that Cash did such an awesome job of it that the NIN version must have been the cover. While I now know different, and appreciate the NIN version for its awesomeness, the Johnny Cash cover still blows me away)

Choices for worst:

Britney Spears - I Love Rock and Roll (stay away from the classics, bitch)

Shannon Noll - What About Me? (see above times one million)

Madonna - American Pie (see above; the only thing that salvages this track at all is that it can lay claim to the worst rap EVAR which makes the whole exercise kind of hilarious)

Oddly enough, I was talking about this earlier with my cousins. We decided that the worst covers had to be the ones by Limp Bizkit, Behind Blue Eyes and My Generation. They butchered The Who classics.

A cover I like is Guns and Roses version of Sympathy For the Devil, I just feel the faster pace of it makes it superior to the origional by The Rolling Stones

Best:-

Johnny Cash version of 'Hurt' by 'Nine Inch Nails' - Totally agree with Raz %) .

Jimi Hendrix version of 'All Along The Watchtower' by 'Bob Dylan'.

The Beatles version of 'Twist And Shout' by 'Top Notes'.

Seaweed version of 'Go Your Own Way' by 'Fleetwood Mac' - Cover version appeared in movie Clerks =D .

PM Dawn version of 'Norweign Wood' by 'The Beatles'.

Atari version of 'The Boys Of Summer' by 'Don Henley'.

Worst:-

William Shatner (Yes Star Trek's Captain Kirk) version of 'Luck In The Sky With Diamonds' by 'The Beatles'.

Some of the best not mentioned:

Johnny Cash - Rusty Cage (soundgarden) and Mercy Seat (nick cave)
Pixies - Head On (jesus and mary chain)
Jose Gonzalez - Love will tear us apart (joy division)

I definitely agree with what's been posted so far. The only other one I can think of that is terrible is Jessica Simpson cover of Nancy Sinatra's These Boots Are Made For Walking. *spew*

I think the Megadeth's version of paranoid by Black Sabbath is pretty fucken good, and Sarah Blasko's version of Flame trees by Chisel is worth a mention to.

Sexual Healing - Ben Harper

Also that Michael Buble' song Muse did a cover of. Classic.

oh that new limp bizkit song of the verves bitter sweet symphony. absolutely butchered it!

I forgot about that! I actually really liked that cover, but I love Frente.

Also, the Breeders do a cool version of Happiness Is A Warm Gun...and I know it's cheesy as all fuck, but I do actually dig the Tina Cousins cover of Wonderful Life.. 8) :\

^ Happiness is a warm gum!!! fuck! I love that song and had forgotton all about it.

AGREED. i love the original version. fuck you jessica :p

and i can't spell agreed. i just had a jessica moment :|

Big thumbs up to Johnny Cash for me as well for ' Hurt', also....

The Paradise Motel's version of 'Drive' by the Cars.
The Indigo Girls version of 'Romeo and Juliet' by Dire Straits
Jeff Buckley's version of ' Hallelujah' by Leonard Cohen

As for the worst....so many of them come along i thankfully find them hard to remember, but as has been said Madonna's version of American Pie is well and truly up there with the worst of them.
