Recently we've seen that long-term use and high-doses of AAS probably cause atrophy of various important brain structures in bodybuilders. That's a worrying finding, and should make any bodybuilder think twice about the duration and dosage of his or her AAS use.

However in this new study published a few days ago, we have some evidence to suggest that (very) low levels of testosterone are also likely to be bad for the brain. To quote: "men with prostate cancer who are treated with testosterone-lowering drugs are twice as likely to develop dementia within five years as prostate cancer patients whose testosterone levels are not tampered with."

Of course, it's extremely unlikely that anybody on a bodybuilding forum is on androgen deprivation therapy (ADT)! However what these kinds of findings help to show is that the 'right' levels of AAS for long-term optimal health are neither high nor low but typically those within the normal or 'natural' physiological range and slightly above.

As ever, the take-home message is keep your cycles to a minimum and keep the doses sensible.
