EADD Plumbing and DIY Thread v. Screwing Some Old Boiler Up Against the Wall

The fusebox in our hall cupboard - which is where we access the loft:

What the hell are these two brown socket-like things on the left?

I haven't put a tester on them (yet), but it would be good to get rid of them if possible. Obviously I'm not touching them if I don't have a clue what they are...

Vestigial remains of the old fusebox??
 
They have electricity board seals on them. Probably junction boxes, connecting the meter tails to the consumer unit.

EDIT: Just looked at my own installation again (no pics, unfortunately :p too much stuff in the way) and I also have two of these box thingies with sealing wires. One is connected to the live coming out of the supply meter, and has two other connections: one going to the main consumer unit, and the other going to (or more strictly, coming from) the circuit breaker attached to the generation meter. There's also another, similar junction box, this time in green and yellow and with no seal on it, for joining up all the Earth wires.

The electricians on that other site you don't like :p confirm what you initially said.

It appears that the original meter and/or consumer unit may have been moved at some point, and these blocks are just connectors used to extend the cable. Still very much a part of the live system, so obviously I won't be touching them.

Good to understand these things, though. :)

If (as suggested by the fact of there being just four circuit breakers) it's a flat in a larger house, there may have been a private coin meter installed at some stage previously; then had to be removed when the denomination of coin it took got replaced by a new, smaller version. The 50p shrank in the mid/late 1990s, by which time card meters and even key meters were already coming into use.
 
Yep, it's a flat.

I guessed that there might have been an old card or coin meter there before, but not now. The electric meter is in a locked cupboard on the ground floor.
 
Setting off soon, in search of a replacement piece of fuel hose for my garden strimmer. A poxy, piddly, stupid piece of rubber hose barely 20 centimetres long, that goes from the filter in the petrol tank to the intake pipe of the carburettor; and which, over the course of a decade or so, has suffered from the usual effects of volatile organic solvents upon rubber. The work can be edited down to five minutes on YouTube; so I'd estimate half an hour to an hour in real life, while you do all the fiddly bits that don't make it into the final cut; such as persuading the 45-degree cut end of the hose to pass through the too-small-on-purpose hole in the strimmer's fuel tank at all (well ..... you film the second and all subsequent attempts, so it's already on camera when it happens and you don't have to try again), fishing about inside the tank with a pair of needle-nose pliers to grab the end of the hose and pull it out (this must be particularly nasty given the tendency to jump-cut to re-cutting the end at 90 degrees before pushing it onto the fuel filter), and passing the filter back through the filler hole with the hose alongside it and a nasty kink in that hose. The use of a nicely-produced soundtrack as opposed to live sound is additional evidence that the job is not quite as easy as they are making it seem.

Anyway, there is a specialist garden machinery shop just 20 minutes' walk from here. If they can fit me a new piece of hose while I wait, for not much more than I'd have to pay for a repair kit with the equivalent hose and a new filter from eBay (by the way, possible business opportunity for any unemployed person who gets turned on by the smell of engines and petrol: there's no shortage of similar appliances, even this particular model, being offered there spares-or-repair; plus every generic spare part, and just about sod-all to go wrong with a two-stroke engine anyway), they can get my business.

EDIT: Back. The workshop smelled like a proper workshop; scents of oil, petrol, engines and land speed records to be broken. And though they don't work on "cheap" brands such as McCulloch, they did manage to find me a length of the right size hose that will just be long enough to leave a decent enough tail inside the tank and still reach the carbo. Well worth the £2.50 they charged me (and even gave the old filter a quick blast with the air line! It's actually white) so all I need to do now, is to grab myself some wire cutters (to put a 45 degree cut on the end of the hose; reckoned to make it easier to insert through the tiny little hole in the tank) and needle-nosed pliers (to grab the end of the hose and pull it out through the filler cap hole) from my "electronics tools" drawer, and find out for myself what was really going on while those cameras weren't rolling .....

^ Julie and I have been contracted by your missus to rewire your entire house and install an outdoor hot tub/time machine. Don't worry, it's mate's rates (i.e. a constant supply of beer and drugs while the job is ongoing).

While I'm there, I might have a look at your roof as well. I know nothing about roofing, but I'd like to have a go at it. What I lack in competence, I make up for in enthusiasm. %)

In other news, I'm back in the loft, surprise surprise. Currently hacking some protruding nailplates down to size so I can get the boards level, which is a pure cunt of a job with restricted access. It's like a fucking sauna up there too.

Not trying to have a go at you here felix, so please don't think I am (pls don't go at me) but how come it's ok for felix to challenge mods' actions but not me or Raas. When any of us mention Julie's abbreviation or question it our posts are delete or we're told to drop it. Surely the same should apply for all members?

Felix thats not me going at you just asking the question as lately I feel a bit on eggshells with asking questions that I'm going to be judged wrongly for it by certain people.

Also on plumbing DIY (as this is the thread) surely you're not going in the loft on a day like today???? You'll melt.

Ah ha! it's not random, it's actually a repeating pattern cunningly designed so that no tiles of the same colour are ever adjacent horizontally, vertically or diagonally.


I went in there off me tits on MXE last night to take that photo, and I was transported into a 60s pop art happening! Also, that photo came out exactly as I was seeing it irl, complete with glare and distorted perspective. Weird...


Anyway, you're mad. You wouldn't get me up in an attic on a day like today :!

I just realised that there was a pattern. Looks good!

Don't worry about me up in the loft, I'm taking frequent "refreshment" breaks, just like you were on your tiling job. I can see the evidence in that glass. ;)

I've got two IP65 fluorescent light fittings up there too, which I had in my previous house's garage. There was no fucking way I was leaving them there. ;)
