Psychedelics are Yin, Dissociatives are Yang

Men and women have different biochemistries. But common for us both is that we'll be more peaceful and less aggressive on downers like weed, benzos, and opiates. Can see no argument against that.

Are you on dissociatives or something?

1975 – Canada 81% of inmates involved in aggressive incidents had taken diazepam (Valium) and 3.6 times as many acts of aggression occurred in inmates while on these drugs. Full Text

1978 – Utah A high level of riots, stabbings, cuttings, murders, self mutilation attempted suicide were attributed, at least in part to high consumption of benzodiazepines in a Utah State prison. Full Text

1995 – New South Wales, Australia Restriction of clonazepam (a benzodiazepine) prescription was implemented by the Corrections Health Service of New South Wales due to it causing emotionally reactive and aggressive behaviour with self-harm and suicide attempts in inmates. Full Text

1995 – Parkhurst, UK Tranquilliser prescription (mostly benzodiazepines) was reduced from 3.5kgs p.a. in 1990/91, to 0.15kgs in 1994/95. Correspondingly physical assaults by inmates on another person reduced from 5 in 1990 to 0 in 1995. Full Text

I see an argument against it.. It doesn't take a genius to find it, either.

(There's loads more but.. Just search for: benzodiazepines and aggression / depression)

I was talking more of the general effect downers have on people. Not inmates and violent people with maybe too little in their system to keep them calm. Benzodiapines are different as they can make you stressed or make it easier to commit acts of violence as they keep you calm.

I tried to kill myself on benzodiapines last week so I should know. But I was talking more about the general effect of downers on the average person in a quiet setting, etc. If you take enough most of the time you'll just want to lie down and watch TV or something, or do nothing at all. As opposed to stimulants that motivates you for action.

Anyway, I think you know this is just nit-picking and not how I meant it, though. Anyone would agree that's how it generally works, unless you get problems with withdrawals, or too little drugs in your system.

Everything has a duality. Yin is feminine, yang is masculine. Uppers are yin, downers are yang. Psychedelics are yin, dissociatives are yang. Phenethylamines (like mescaline) are yin, and tryptamines (like dmt and dpt) are yang.

In my understanding of taoism and the taijitu, this is potentially valid except it's the wrong way around. Yin is dormancy and receptivity. Yang is dynamicness and expressive energy. Since a dissociative drug will tend to take you inside, and a downer will sedate you, I'd ascribe that to yin. Psychedelics and uppers tend to be more about engaging with the outside world and so would be more yang. I don't see what makes phenethylamines yin though.

Ultimately though, I consider this kind of thinking reductionist. It's interesting, but I don't find it all that philosophically useful.
