☛ Official ☚ The Big & Dandy Scale / Balance Thread - Part 2.000±

That should be fine, although maybe a bit pricey for what is really a low-end scale.

Has anyone done any legitimate accuracy testing on a MyWeigh Gempro 250?

It seems that all of the positive reviews / recommendations for this scale are just a very non-specific "yeah, I love it, it's great man, works every time".

Whereas, for the Tanita 1230, nuke provided a really nice verification of accuracy by checking it against an analytical lab balance. And in the previous Big and Dandy Scale Thread, another member confirmed the Tanita 1210's accuracy by testing it with a set of calibration masses.

As it stands, the only tried and true RC-worthy portable scales seem to be the Tanita models.

Yeah, amazingly it was actually almost always accurate to +-3-4 mgs(mainly being more in the 1-2 range honestly). I figured it would swing probably by 10ish mgs, especially because I was not terribly kind to it. I've heard so much variation between people on GemPro's/etc that it just seems not worth buying. If I could go back in time I would have just bought a used ana from the start I would have done that fifty times over(the only reason being the ending of your post, but i've never once needed to take a scale anywhere, nor would I really risk it either, I hate when I tap my scales wrong.....). Don't take this as a serious scientific endeavor though, occasionally(my gempro's real problem that made me think it was inaccurate was if you left anything on the pan for more than a minute say, it would start by saying it weighed 25 mgs which is what you want, then you would wander to grab a cap/w/e come back and it would literally sometimes say something outlandish like 176 mgs....)when it would swing badly I would grab the tray and go weigh it on the ana just to see and surprisingly it was always very close to the original displayed weight on the Pro.

^ Thanks. :)

I'm going to make a call to Tanita Corporation tomorrow afternoon to find out more about their warranty. As long as their products come with a decent manufacturer's warranty, I'd say they're the way to go. Otherwise, the Gempro's 30-year warranty would probably swing me in the other direction.

I'll post what I find out.

Called Tanita, they offer a 1-year warranty on the 1230 with a +/- 8mg accuracy guarantee, which seems fairly generous (compared to the 3 *gram* accuracy threshold for the warranty that Ohaus offered on their similarly-priced gem scale). MyWeigh (Gempro 250 manufacturer) was totally impossible to get on the phone, and failed to answer any of my emails within the promised 2 business days. As far as I'm concerned, MyWeigh's customer service is, errm, non-existant.

My suspicions are confirmed. Tanita is the only way to go if you want a small, portable scale for weighing research chemicals.

Went ahead and ordered a Tanita 1230 and a set of Class 6 calibration weights ranging from 1mg to 500mg. I only wish I had the money for (and ability to openly house) an analytical balance:

The thing just looks badass.

i'm looking into buying a scale but i'm really confused. some people say how their budget scale is good enough for them, some even claim it's accurate up to +/- 1-2mg, others write that the gempro250 (or similar) is the gold-standard and you shouldn't buy cheaper... i'd rather buy a budget scale as the gempro is a bit to pricey for me.
as a reference, 2c-e is a chem i will dose but i have eyeballed it before (intranasally, working up in bumps) and also took doses of about 20-25mg (liquid measuring).

i don't think, i'll weigh out single doses of chemicals more potent than 2c-e, i'd rather use liquid measuring for that kind of stuff. and for weighing out shrooms i suppose any scale is good enough^^

what would you recommend me?

^ The "budget scales" are notoriously unreliable -- measurements of chemicals made on those cheap gem scales have been proven to be off by absurd and dangerous margins. However, as long as you buy a decent calibration weight set, I would say, go right ahead: you can always double-check the accuracy of your scale, so at least you know the gamble you're taking with the thing.

For your purposes I would recommend the set I purchased: the Ohaus Class 6 1mg-500mg stainless steel calibration weight set. It'll run you about $40.

TAC, in your pic, I'm more interested in the thing closest to the camera; for home-loading ammunition. Notice the brass casing.

Ahh scales, something psychedelic users, gun nuts, and psychedelic users who are gun nuts have in common ;)

^ That's not actually my picture, just for clarification. I wish it were my picture. :D

Actually, other than being associating with home-loading ammunition, I'm not sure what exactly all of the paraphernalia in that pic is about.

Scales were something I was interested in before I got into drugs, due to my obsession with pyrotechnics and firework making. Mixing oxidizers and fuels to load fireworks requires very exact mass measurements.

Unfortunately, fireworks and drugs really don't mix. Recently I safely disposed of all highly flammable substances in my collection. I just didn't want to be tempted to start playing with fire during some sort of drug-induced lapse of judgment. :P

Tanita 1230 test results

Just got around to testing my Tanita 1230 with my set of Ohaus calibration weights. I couldn't be happier with the results. :)

Each of six weights I tested, ranging from 10mg to 500mg, all registered precisely the correct weight, not a *single* milligram error.

The 5mg weight registered as 6 mg, but the digital readout can only display even numbers, so that was the most accurate possible assessment that the scale could have made.

I didn't bother testing my 1mg or 2mg weights, because the 5mg weight was already so tiny it was practically impossible to handle. :P Anyways, you get the idea. The Tanita 1230 is the bee's knees. Now I can always trust that my drug dosages are within 1 mg error, at most, from the readout on my scale.

NOTE: for the 10mg and 5mg weights, to get an accurate measurement I had to TARE the scale *without* the weighing tray, so that I had to manually take the difference between the weight of the loaded tray and the empty tray (for instance, after adding my 10mg weight, the reading transitioned from 1.454g to 1.464g). If I measured the 10mg weight alone, I got wonky results. This is not unique to my scale, and is a known issue with Tanita's gem scales.

I bought that same American weigh scale. it seemed to work accurately enough for the MDMA I measured on it. However I'm gonna be using it for 2C-I soon... Thinking I'ma err on the side of caution and stick to liquid measure on that one.

whats volumetric dosing :) --

also i got that same AWS stormcharger for measuring 2c-b .. it seems to be okay - what i like to do is put a small amour in a cap after weighing the cap and then subtracting the caps weight from it for a close to accurate reading for the most part id say its off at MOST 5mg .. however if you dealing with 2cb as long as u get like 20-25 mg u should be fine 5 up or 5 down and im guessing 5mg off is still a bit high -- it came with 2 10mg weights to test it. i dont like how unsturdy the little tray/metal piece it came with had and it orginally had this sticky film on it which i thought i got off fully however it seems as tho it must have left some stickiness behind as the first weigh i attempted putting the stuff right onto the tray and some stuck so i was unsure how much i took that time because i dint even weigh the cap afterwards..

i think i need to re clean that tray with alcohol real good and test to see if stuff will again stick to it -- if so ill have to stick using the cap method of weighing and subtracting the caps weight for an idea of what it weighs.

I bought this scale for use with 2C-C http://www.amazon.com/American-Weig...DNAM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326104282&sr=8-1
It has been fine for measuring 2C-C doses but I was wondering if anyone has any experience using it for things like 2C-E? Would it be safe?

I've used that exact scale for plenty of 2C-E and 2C-C. It's fine. I never had a problem weighing out in the 10 - 20mg range.

Here's a tip: The little tray that comes with it should weigh ~2.780g. (It should usually show up anywhere between 2.778 and 2.785). I start by placing the tray on, confirming that the tray is within that range, hit TARE, and then tap out a little powder. VERY IMPORTANT - After I have what seems to be my target amount poured out on to the tray, I always double or triple check it.

So yeah, it's a perfectly fine budget scale I think. I'm on my 2nd. The first one I had was very reliable, but the digital display stopped working right after a year. I noticed my second one has been more quirky. Sometimes it gives me a number which I know is WAY under and I have to reseat the tray a few times or turn it off/on in order to get it to work right. Like I said, recheck it a couple times to make sure you're getting a consistent weight value..
