Things to consider when starting a new topic (everyone read again!)

Lets just start with a link to the full text of the Guidelines for the Aus Bluelight Social Forum. Everyone who hasn't actually read these yet should go and do so sometime soon.
Now. The reason I'm posting this is not so I can have a whinge about how it was better in the old days. People change and people move on, and it's natural to think that it was better a year ago. I'm sure in a years time a lot more people will think the same way about the way it is now. So don't think this is an oldskool bitch and moan from someone that's not even really that oldskool ;) . This is just a friendly reminder to everyone...
The major point of this thread is a request to everyone to think before they start a new topic. Rather than just starting a new thread for whatever it is that pops into your mind at the time, try and think about what sort of responses the thread will invite. And more importantly, think about whether it's the sort of thing that needs a new thread at all. There might be a very similar thread already in existence, or it might be a topic better suited to discussion somewhere else like the IRC channel for example.
There's probably three major types of threads that get started in Aus Social: The Poll/Rollcall, The News Article, and The Discussion. Of those, the discussion thread is the most welcome. Discussion threads invite people to have a think, use their brains a bit, and often debate an issue. Try to word the thread so that it's clear exactly what issue you want people to discuss. These types of threads I think have the most value, and are a large part of what sets us apart from the main social forum.
The News Article thread is where you come across something interesting in the media and so quote the media article in a new thread. These are often good because we can be alerted to something interesting that we otherwise might have missed, and they usually drop off the first page in a few days anyway. But try to restrict yourselves to only posting them occasionally - and preferably if there's not already 10 others on the first page.
The one that's a bit of a problem at the moment (in my opinion) is the Poll/Rollcall threads. These usually just invoke one word answers from people, and often end up degenerating into total shit talk (for want of a better term). Now it's not like these types of threads are going to be completely banned or anything, far from it. But these are the ones I want everyone to really have a good think about before they start a new topic. If every thread on the first page is asking people what their favourite vegetable is (the most recent example that springs to mind, apologies for singling it out), then it makes Aus Social very boring for the people that just lurk.
So to sum up, I'll say it again. Think before starting a new topic. Our social forum is a great place because it's not considered a dumping ground for any old shit people think of that won't fit anywhere else. But I'd hate to see the place slip too far, because recently it's been hard sometimes to tell the difference between Aus and Main social.
Thankyou... :)

I dont like vegetables to be honest, but banana if you want to do fruits mate.
*Ducks and grins*

i believe in fighting threads, not starting threads...
i ride in the front seat of taxis yada yada yada.

I think it would be pertinent to allow a greater leway for positive threads.
More PLUR less GRRR :)

Define positive...
Do you mean that threads called "Things you hate" should be closed, but threads called "Things you like" should be left open? Or do you mean that if the poster has posted it with the best of intentions then it should be left open? Or do you mean that if it's a proton and not an electron it should be left open? Or do you mean that we should keep closing threads, but do it in a more positive way?
Seriously, it's everyone's forum, and we've got a pretty tough job trying to please everyone. So feel free to help us out by giving us detailed descriptions of exactly what you all think is acceptable and what we should close. We might not necessarily agree, but we'll definitely take everything on board and use your comments here to help us make the decision whether or not to close a particular thread... :)

Pleo: I dont mean shut all negative threads, eg. the misc rants thread is great :)
It's more, I really don't want to see this bored disintergrate into people bitching and moaning about shit all the time. This just causes arguments and useless flame wars.
I've seen it happen to a bulletin board before, just really dont want it to happen to this one.
I can't give any examples of threads that should have been closed, cos IMO u mods are doin a great job. It's more something to keep in mind when deciding on a thread. ie: "will someone benefit from this". Even if it just puts a smile on someones face, then it's prob. worth being here (so long as it a) hasnt been done b4 and b) cant go into amusing linkage etc.)
Miss Apple: I have been looking for a physical incarnate of PLUR so I can fuck it, but I cant find one :p~~~

I personally think we don't have enough porn threads in bluelight...the closet we get is yukky pictures of chicks and glosticks...
bring porn and bluelight together and I won't have to surf anywhere else. ;) Perhaps a porn forum? Hmm...a suggestion of 'Annoucements and Comment's I think...

what about bluelighter porn?
Perhaps tars could provide us with that video from the other nite to start it off ;P

OK... things are starting to slip again... I've just come back from a weekend out and closed 5 posts so far. It's not hard to avoid having your post closed if you think about what responses your thread is going to get and try to make the thread relevant to everyone. If it's just a rant then jump in the IRC channel or find the miscelanious rants thread.

A couple of points:
It's not hard to avoid having your post closed if you think about what responses your thread is going to get and try to make the thread relevant to everyone.
Relevant to everyone? There is no such thing. Example include Melbourne Trance Night (btw, would 'Perth Trance Night' get closed? You decide...), BEACH PARTAY REVIEW!!! , etc. If you strictly allow only threads that apply to everyone, it would result in a pretty boring board.
My concern is that some clarification is needed in the guidelines. There is currently a situation where threads like i'm addicted. are being closed without conflicting with any guidelines that I can find.
(BTW, it's easy to say that particular thread could have gone to IRC, but when it comes down to it, how much of this couldn't?)
If threads are being closed without breaking the rules, then the guidelines should be updated so that people can actually understand what rules they may be breaking.

^^^^^
Would you like us to sit down and write a 400 page set of laws that can be followed, and also set up an apeals system? Or would it be better to have things left up to our judgement with the opportunity for anyone who disagrees to email us? Maybe relevant to everyone is a bad term - I should have said relevant to at least someone other than yourself (ie: people can respond with their own relevant ideas and not god only knows what). Basically I'm just trying to cut down on the number of threads that have no direction on what responses are supposed to be received.
And seriously, how much more clarification do we need to give? There's mountains of writing we've done to try to help, but ultimatly it's all taken on a case by case basis. Read everything we've written, and use your judgement. And as I said, if you don't agree then email us - there's always a lot of thought put into it when we close a thread and we'll be happy to explain why. It's just easier and allows for more detailed answers via email when talking about specific cases... :)

So much for constructive criticism.
[RANT]
How about you write a whole batch of approved topics and let us choose from them?

Mods. make A judgement call, just realise that there will be shit threads and from time to time people will respond in a more humorous way and the thread will slip.
i think maybe a quick warning post on the thread before its closed has worked in the past.
(unless its Freakin obvious it NEEDS to be closed for the sanity of bluelight users)
If anyone disagrees, email the mod. If you feel it was wrongly closed, then find a solution.
Sheesh.

Jakoz: My ICQ is 89148659... you obviously feel strongly about this and I want to hear what you mean properly because communicating on a message board is hard at the best of times - catch me on IRC or on ICQ sometime soon please...
