Such a wholesome science fiction film that's really fun to think about from time to time. I really like the trials at the end when they start implying that it's S.R. Hadin's big "hoax" before his death. Just an all around fun film.

what do you think about the movie?

contact

get with it mod!
the poll

and i like this movie. i like that it isnt too cheesy while having enough effects to make it believeable in some ways

I was thinking about the special effects while watching it last night. specifically the ones durring her simulated "visit" I think although the fx's look sort of shitty (and at the time I'm sure they wanted them to be top of the line) I think it works to an advantage because she was having some sort of dream and in dreams the special fx's are always off and fuzzy.

thanks for the poll wanderlust.:)

one of my all-time favorite movies.

i think this film would have a harder time getting made today with all the Jesus police around.

One of my all time favourates also. I never get tired of seeing this.

I love the shot when she finds her father collapsed and runs to the bathroom. It cleverly changes from her chasing the camera up stairs and around corners to being her reflection on the medicine cabinet oh so smoothly.

Agreed, an all-time favourite. Love the way the theme is echoed throughout the whole movie. Strong characters, awesome visuals. A lot of people slate the ending because they expected to see aliens, but it works so well when you think of the journey that the main character takes. Wonderful stuff.

i haven't seen this since it came out, but i remember thinking it was just brilliant - took themes and ideas which really could have ended up corny and annoying but made them realistic (well, sorta ;)) and moving. need to see it again.

The movie was great, the book was even better. I have a soft spot in my heart for Carl Sagan though :)

He was a chronic smoking genius...nuff said.

I should watch "Contact" again. Last time I saw it I was on mushrooms and it was awesome! There was a definate synergy with the film and the shrooms. The trip coincided perfectly, it was fun!

You need to read the book. Its awesome. The end isn't corny like the movie, they actually get into mathamatics and whatnot

what was corny about the ending? was it corny in the way people would say " field of dreams" was corny, i loved both movies, but i dont get why people say they are " corny" just cos the book talks about maths and the film talks about love means its less corny?

I'm also interested in what makes the movie "corny"

I like how they kept the 18 hours of static a secret.

Top Sci-Fi flick :)

GReat cast, Great DOP. Great Dialogue.

"I've had a long time to make enemies, Dr. Arroway. There are many governments, business interests, even religious leaders who would like to see me depart this earth. And I will grant them their wish soon enough... But before I do, I wish to make a small contribution -- a final gesture of goodwill toward the people of this little planet who've given -- from whom I've taken so much."

^ Ah no, before you get too excited, it is a work of fiction.

Yes, that means that it is not real.

That is, made up characters, made up story, and made up new age hippy bullshit.

Highly watchable film though from memory...

This is one of my favourite movies. Fabulous acting, great dilemmas, good effects. Stimulating on ALL levels.

Ok I think this question might be those who have read the book because it wasn't explained at all in the movie. Why don't they just drop someone else through the damn machine!? :|

^in the film, they(writers) seemed to explain it when the alien life said something along the lines of "this is just one step." and seemed to allude to how others wouldn't be able to see what she saw when she asked if they could.

And since they saw the machine as a failure, why waste money running it again? (weak answer I know...but what I came up with after seeing it)
