1) Rearrange the letters of: NOR DO WE to make one word.

2) You have 8 balls, one ball is slightly heavier than the others.

There is no possible way of telling which one is the heaviest without weighing the balls.

You have a tip scale (the old fashion ones with two see-saw plates which balance when both weights are the same).

You can only use the tip scale twice to find out which is the heavist ball.

It is possible so don't flame me for breaking your brain or keeping you up at night. This is a good one for lateral thinking.

Anyone else got some good ones?

:D

edit: don't scroll down to the next post if you want to figure it out for yourself. it took one person to crack it!

Split balls into two piles of 3 and one of two. Compare the two piles of 3. If the ball is in one of those piles, the tipscale will reveal it. Then you may take two balls from the pile of three and measure them on the scale. Either the ball will be one of those two, and will be revealed by the scale, or it must be the single ball not measured.
Alternatively, if the ball is not in the two piles of three, then it must be in the single group of two. Compare the two on the scale, and bam... There is your answer.

as far as NOR DO WE goes, I fricken hate anagrams. Sorry.

nice one thoth, that didn't take long at all! definately a lot faster than it took me anyway..

thank you come again, we need a new riddle!

Nor do we
Breaks down to "One word"

An alternative for the balls could be to simply place four balls on each plate, then take two off at a time. the plates will either stay in balance throughout meaning the first two taken off are of odd weights. Or the scales will tip. The next turns will either have the scales right themselves, leaving the the odd weight's in your hands, or stay unbalanced till the end leaving the odd weights on eack plate.

As for more riddles this is the only one i can remember.

A farmer comes to a river crossing and has to use a boat in order to cross.

With him he has a fox, a chicken and a bag of corn. He can only carry one item with him in the boat at one time.

His problem is, if he leaves the fox with the chicken it will eat it, or if he leaves the chicken with corn, the chicken will eat the corn

How does he get them all safely to the other side?

He just has to make multiple trips, shuffling the fox, corn and chicken around a few times.

you have arrived at a fork in the road. there you meet with twin brothers. one brother always speaks the truth, the other always lies. you ask if they can help you with directions to the city of riches, and they agree that you may ask either one of them just one question. from this one question alone, you must find which road to take.

which direction is the city of Gold
Which direction is not the city of gold

Ohh, that's an old riddle! It was in the Neverending story!

You ask "If I ask your brother if this is the way to the city of riches, what will he say?"

Now, if you're pointing at the right road:

The truthful man will say "No.", because the untruthful man will tell you it isn't the right road.
The untruthful man will say "No.", because he's lying about his brother saying yes.

If you're pointing at the wrong road:

The truthful man will say "Yes.", because his brother will lie about it being the right road.
The untruthful man will say "Yes.", because he will lie about his brother saying it's the wrong road.

So, if you get a No answer, you take that road. And if you get a Yes answer, you take the other road.

The end.

^^^ Thank you Anna! That was driving me insane :D

Here's an easy one:

A rooster is sitting on top of a shed roof.

One side of the roof has a steeper angle than the other, however the wind is blowing against the steeper side.

SO ... if it lays an egg, which way will the egg roll?

muzby's riddle:

you are in a two level flat.

on the ground floor, there are three light switches, connected to three light bulbs in a room on the top floor.

you cannot see the light globes from where you are.

how can you tell which light switch operates which globe?

you can only go upstairs once, and can't come back down.

Hmmn.
This is the only way I can think of doing it... Switch a random switch on for a couple of minutes to let the bulb heat up. Then switch it off, switch another on and go up and check. One off light should still be warm, and one on. Elimination should allow you to determine which light corresponds to which switch.

I don't think that is the answer though, my method seems too much like cheating ;)

This guy living on the 20th floor in an apartment building got up early each morning to go to work in a downtown store. He always went into the elevator on the 20th floor and rode down to the entrance (1st floor). When he came home he always rode the elevator from the entrance and up to the 8th floor. He walked out of the elevator and walked the stairs up to his apartment on the 20th floor.

Why doesn't he take the elevator all the way up to his apartment?

How many of each type of animal did Moses take on the Ark?

The 22nd and 24th presidents of the United States had the same mother and the same father, but were not brothers. How can this be possible?

Two convicts are locked in a cell. There is an unbarred window high up in the cell. No matter if they stand on the bed or one on top of the other they can't reach the window to escape. They then decide to tunnel out. However, they give up with the tunneling because it will take too long. Finally one of the convicts figures out how to escape from the cell. What is his plan?

None. It wasn't Moses, it was Noah :D

***********************************************

A fair few of you will know this one, comes in four parts:

(a) How do you put a giraffe in a fridge?

(b) How do you put an elephant in a fridge?

(c) All the animals in the forest attend a meeting, all but one attend. Who doesn't go?

(d) You need to cross a river which is infested with crocodiles. There is no bridge, nor boat. How do you get across?

Because he is short or a dwarf and can't reach the button for the 20th floor (except on rainy days when he can reach it with his umbrella ;))

The can stand on the pile of dirt they generated from digging to reach the unbarred window.

The 22nd and 24th presidents of the United States had the same mother and the same father, but were not brothers. How can this be possible?

Because they were the same person - Grover Cleveland!

a) open the door, put the giraffe in and close the door
b) open the door, remove the giraffe and put the elephant in
c) the elephant because he's in the fridge
d) swim, all the crocodiles are at the animal meeting :)
