How do you guys feel about Zoloft? I've had anxiety and depression for awhile and was recently prescribed 50mg a day of Zoloft. I've been taking it everyday for 3 weeks and so far i feel slight changes. I feel less anxious, find it easier to talk to people, but the depression is still there. And its worsened my insomnia. I've also been feeling emotionless. Not in a particularly bad way, just content. Not terrible, not great, just content. I'm sure when i go for my check up in a couple weeks he'll up my dosage to 100mg and probably prescribe something for my insomnia.

Anyone have any experiences with Zoloft?

I was on zoloft 100mg for 6 months a few years ago. I was never depressed, I just wanted to see if i could use an SSRI to achieve a higher baseline. I liked zoloft for about a month but then I stopped feeling the positive effects. After several months the negative effects such as having no emotions and difficult sex began to become more pronounced so I quit using it. I had no withdrawls quiting cold turkey but I know some who have had a terrible time getting off SSRIs. From my experience tryptophan works as well as any ssri for getting the AD effect.

I'd just like to say, keep in mind that you need to give it about 1 month before it reaches a stable blood plasma level and you can make true assessment of how it is working for you. Insomnia is also a common initial side effect with antidepressants but should pass for the most part once you get more used to the medication.

Best of luck and be sure to keep us up to date on how you're doing.

Bronson's correct about waiting a month (the big bitch about most SSRI's).

I was put on Zoloft when I was 9 for severe OCD. Along with CBT it worked, but it led me to gain weight, which then made me depressed. Eventually I got off of it. Many people report 'numbness' on anti-depressants. You may want to look into Wellbutrin (bupropion hcl) as its a Dopamine Re-Uptake Inhibitor making it different from the pure SSRI's. I find it works faster too. However if you have insomnia and anxiety, it may not be the best choice.

People with depression usually have to go through several meds before they find the one that works for them. Sometime's it takes a combination. I think it's pretty important though to be going to therapy at the same time. To this day I'm not sure if the CBT or the Sertraline really dulled my symptoms of OCD, for all I know it could have been all CBT.

How long should i stop taking the Zoloft for before i can fully roll? Is there a chance of getting Serotonin Syndrome if i take it now? Also does Zoloft permanently re-wire the brain? Or will it go back to normal after awhile of not taking it

short answer is combining serotonin agents = risk of serotonin syndrome

I would ask your question in the ecstasy discussion forum. The folks there will be able to answer all your questions about MDMA and SSRI interactions.

Give this a read as it seems to deal directly with what you are asking...

FAQ: Antidepressants and Recreational Drugs (long!)

This specifically:
MDMA/Ecstasy (includes MDA, MDEA etc): It is NOT POSSIBLE TO ROLL while taking an SSRI! It is a COMPLETE and UTTER WASTE OF YOUR MONEY! Basically, SSRIs 'block' the part of your brain where the MDMA needs to go in order to get you high; and since MDMA can't get in there, you won't be able to get high. You might experience some weak 'speedy' effects from high doses of MDMA, but you will not be able to truly 'roll'.

Do NOT stop taking your SSRI so that you can roll. First of all, even if you stop taking it for a few days, it is unlikely that you will fully be able to roll. It takes much longer than a few days for all the SSRI (and its metabolites and effects) to leave your body (read above under 'metabolism'). Second, you can get VERY SICK (withdrawal symptoms, depression, etc) if you stop taking your medicine. I strongly suggest that you give up rolling while you are taking an SSRI.

Zoloft will definately affect MDMA (not to mention cause possibly seretonin syndrome in combination, like Synaptic Gap said). Whenever I've consumed MDMA while on an SSRI, it almost completely blocked the effects, though I would get mild visuals. If you were to stop taking Sertraline in order to roll, you'd have to wait quite some time (26 hour half life) and would not be worth it.

Man that's a bummer. Thanks for the information. Anyone know what other recreational drugs interact with Zoloft? Because i'm gonna have to put the Molly away and look for something else to take this weekend

I did LSD a couple of times while on lexapro (a different ssri) and tripped good. The LSD did feel a little weaker but I still tripped and had a good time.

I think that with Lsd or Mdma you run the risk of Serotonin Syndrome while taking any ssri's. Anyone know how shrooms would be effected? Shrooms would be fine i assume.

Check the link I posted above, it lists the interactions of just about anything you can think of with SSRIs.
