The point is, if you don't know anything about Zen, then whether or not you've attained enlightenment is meaningless, because you won't have any awareness of the fact, which is the magic key, and goal of the entire practice, as I understand it.
Put another way, if you don't know you shouldn't try to "find" or "do" anything, you'll undoubtedly end up in an endless and paradoxical search for enlightenment, because it is human nature to seek what we desire.
Once you advance a step in consciousness you will know. They're mental break throughs or revelations if you will, that come from realizing the truth of a concept, but not only that, they cause you to reject a formal behavior somewhat passively and/or find it wholly ignorant of you to have engaged in it; or realize the futility of that set of actions. very similar to people's description of NDE.
Also According to most other forms of Buddhism I'm all but one step from total enlightenment. Haha, which is bullshit haha.
I follow philosophical or as I call it non bastardized Daoism. Which I would also suggest OP checks out. To build towards as emptiness (as a Buddhist would) is a futile effort. (or enlighten yourself as a way to stop being a self) Taoism teaches that the fulfillment of following The Path [wu wei] (there is no path but your path, and your path is not THE PATH. Everyone has their own path but they are all the path). Or the
fulfillment of self by
ACTING with the path as to be
INACTIVE .
Thirty spokes meet at a nave;
Because of the hole we may use the wheel.
Clay is moulded into a vessel;
Because of the hollow we may use the cup.
Walls are built around a hearth;
Because of the doors we may use the house.
Thus tools come from what exists,
But use from what does not.

The Way takes no action, but leaves nothing undone.
When you accept this
The world will flourish,
In harmony with nature.
Nature does not possess desire;
Without desire, the heart becomes quiet;
In this manner the whole world is made tranquil.
