Looking for the opinions and thoughts of others.
I've never been addicted to heroin so keep in mind it's hard for me to wrap my head around it.

My boyfriend struggled with a heroin addiction (injecting) before I met him. Almost two years ago he got caught and charged with intent to sell, so he was basically forced to get clean because he went to jail. He relapsed (snorting, no injecting) when we first started dating. I got in too deep and found out about his addiction because i started noticing the stories, lies, missing money, and constant manipulation...

He broke his hand 10 days ago, went to the hospital and now being hospitalized for his ongoing chronic lung disease he was born with. He decided to get help while in the hospital by talking to a psychiatrist a couple times a week about his opiate addiction. The doctor has him on oxycodone to manage his pain from his broken hand. He keeps saying he got help for himself and he's been clean for 2 weeks now even though he's been on oxycodone every day. Would you consider this "clean" even though he is taking an opiate often responsibly and under supervision? I feel like you can't be clean if you still have what you're addicted to in your system.

I, myself, have been struggling with cocaine addiction for over a year now. I had some on me when I visited him in the hospital last night and he wanted some because he was having really bad side affects from taking such a high dose of Prednisone. He snorted some with me and it didn't do much for him. Then he realized he can flush his IV with it. He felt better instantly....

I feel like anyone who says they're in "recovery" aren't likely to think of or even be comfortable putting a drug into their veins even though it's not his drug of choice. I mean my tolerance to cocaine is high now but the thought of using it intravenously has never crossed my mind. He hasn't shot up in almost 2 years but the thought still came to his mind and he did it without thinking twice. He didn't use a needle, just flushed it through his IV. But isn't that still addict mentality?
Looking for other peoples thoughts and opinions on that...

Hey, if he takes opiates every day via Rx, there's nothing "wrong" with that IMO. My father takes prescribed pain medication every day and I don't consider him to be a "drug addict". It's more complicated when someone has a prior substance use disorder but the responsible use of a narcotic for a legitimate medical condition? There's no shame in that IMO. You have to take into account your motivations, your environment & responsibilities, your supply, your ROA and other factors when determining whether or not the presence of a certain drug in your life is "good" or "bad".

oh no, i absolutely agree. if you have a prescription for a pain medication, doesn't mean you're a drug addict at all.
i mean more like, since he has such a recent history of being addicted and abusing opioids, would you consider yourself "getting clean" or in recovery even though you're still taking opioids (even though they're necessary for pain)?
i don't think you can consider yourself clean if you still have the drug you're addicted to in your system. does that make sense or am i fucking crazy

Even if he has been taking oxycodone if it's for legitimate pain and he isn't abusing it to get high then I would call that "clean" even if he still has opiates in his system. I've heard people on sub or methadone maintenance describe themselves as clean.

They are clean in the sense that they aren't in that dirty cycle of getting high, withdrawaling, scoring etc. My personal definition of being clean means that the person is on successful road to getting off the drug completely. If he is purposely getting high on the oxy then that is not conducive to getting off opiates completely so that wouldn't be clean. By my definition only he can know for certain whether he is clean since you don't know what his intention are with the oxycodone.

You also said anyone in recovery shouldn't even think or feel comfortable putting drugs in their system. You don't think people in recovery can have urges? It sounds like by your definition a person who has been off of drugs for a year but still has a strong urge to take the drug isn't really clean, which just doesn't seem like the right way to think about it.
