I believe God is a man made idea that allows a person to do what is spiritually in their best interests, especially cited during times when a person is going against their baser desires.
In order to ignore the physical cravings for certain unhealthy pleasures it's necessary to imagine or believe that there is some greater reward for showing such restraint. Most people think of the reward as coming from God above, if that's what works, then why not? The idea has stood the test of time, and a total rejection of it, without a suitable stand-in, has been shown to lead to many problems in a person's life.
I certainly believe in a higher power, but nothing mystical, just the whole "two heads are better than one" thing. Meaning I believe the connections between people constitute the real higher power in this world, in addition to the laws of nature and their consequences.
Similarly I believe Karma is purely a title for the sum total of the consequences of any given action. Consequences come in many forms, and they can take a toll internally and subtly, or externally and obviously.
If a person does a wretched act, then that affects his thoughts, which affects his feelings, which affects his actions henceforth, which could affect his facial expressions and body language, which affects how others may view him, and so on. Even if his wretched act might not result in a direct and obvious negative result, he is still affected negatively to a great extent. It might present itself in the form of a neurosis or other mental or physical issue later on down the line, or it might affect his social standing. Any number of things can result, and the sum total of all those results are what I think is considered by many to be Karma.
It's all pretty logical to me. Yet I think spirituality is nothing mystical, and something highly important to a person's well being.
